The city of Greenwood started out as crossroads village in the 1800’s, and as the state of Indiana grew, so did the

city. In 1900, the population was 1,503 and grew to 3,66 in 1950. In 1960, the centennial year of Greenwood Christian Church, the population was 6,938. As the city grew, so did the congregation. It is interesting to note that the growth of the congregation was measured primarily by the bible school attendance. In 1946, the average attendance was 138 and by 1959 it has increased to an average of 309. During the first quarter of 1960, the average was up to 333. Attendance for worship services also had a big increase. In 1954, the average was 279, in 1955 it was 319. On Easter Sunday, 1960, the centennial year, the bible school attendance was 459, the largest ever for Bible

School up to that time. The elders looking to the future predicted that by 1963 the average would be about 420. This presented a problem. With attendance increasing and since it had been 19 years since any major addition had been made to the building, a committee was formed to study the situation and come up with a master plan for the future. The official board saw the needs as follows: 1) possible building expansion to the present site, with a new bible school addition, 2) to consider the cost of a new building site and church building. After consideration, the congregation decides to construct a new church building and buys the 5 acres on Madison Avenue known as the Donnell Estate for the purchase price of $47,500. Goodman Builders of Missouri is hired as the contractor and Phase 1 of a three phase building is constructed for $181,055 and is dedicated in 1963. In 1968, the congregation builds a $25,000 parsonage on the Western Edge of the property. Phase 2 of the building is completed and is dedicated on October 10, 1971. The new addition adds a 760 seat sanctuary and also adds 15 new classrooms, office space and small chapel. George Roberts is the minister. Brother Roberts was elected minister in 1959 to replace Richard Burton who resigned. Larry Metcalf is called as Associate and Youth Minister. In 1976, Shan Rutherford replaces George Roberts as minister and in 1975, David Strange becomes Youth Minister. That same year, the average attendance reaches 678.

In 1977, with attendance averaging 798, it becomes necessary to begin Phase 3 of the building program. And, in 1984, at the cost of $1,300,000 a new family life center is added, along with 18 new classrooms, increase seating in the balcony area, and a gym and kitchen. Three worship times are necessary due to increase in attendance and the need for parking spaces. In 1985, the congregation celebrates it’s 125th anniversary. Attendance is now averaging 1,028 as the city of Greenwood population grows to 26,605. In the 90s three services are needed due to lack of parking spaces. Since there isn’t room for building expansion or parking spaces, it becomes necessary...more in the next issue!

THE 150th ANNIVERSARY COOKBOOK

The cookbook is nearing completion. We’ve received many great recipes and have gleaned recipes from cookbooks that were put together from Sunday School classes, Bible Study groups, Martha Circle, the retreat one year and others from 1960 up through the years to the present. We have several families that have submitted recipes from daughters, mothers and grandmothers of Greenwood Christian women. We still don’t know what our exact cost of the cookbook will be as I write this but we want to keep the cost right around $10 if possible. We will be taking pre-publishing orders beginning March 14 through April 2 in order to have the books back in time for Mother’s Day gifts. Please do not delay in making your purchase as we will only print a very few copies over our pre-publishing order. Once the pre-sale is over on April 2 we will not be able to change our order. The cookbook team will be at the Information Center each weekend to help you with your order or you can come by the office during office hours. We have so many great cooks in this church and it has been fun seeing the recipes and names from past years of Women’s Ministry. The legacy of love and memories of faithful service left in these recipes by all these women is all for the pleasure and glory of God. We hope you will want your own copy of this 150th Anniversary Cookbook. Thank you to all who submitted recipes and helped with this project.

Going DEEP...into ourCRANIUMS

by Matt Giebler l Executive Minister of Programming

I write this near the midpoint of our “Go DEEP” series, a five-week preaching effort to clarify who

we are as a church and what God has called us to do. We take our directions from God’s Word, and while other churches express similar ideas in many different ways, we feel led in this place, at this point in history to articulate our purposes for existence as follows …

OUR VISION: To carry on the work of Jesus by loving God and loving others.

OUR MISSION: Greenwood Christian Church exists to help people go DEEP …• DISCOVER new life in Jesus;• EXPERIENCE belonging in the

family of Jesus;• ENGAGE our world with the love

of Jesus;• PURSUE transformation into the

likeness of Jesus.

By the time you read this, we will have completed this series. It’s my hope that you now understand better what scripture calls God’s people to be and to do. If someone were to stop you on the street or in the hallway and ask you what Greenwood Christian Church is trying to accomplish, could you tell them? Are you familiar enough with our vision and mission to

explain them to others? Have you memorized these details?

While we’re on that subject, what kinds of things do you know by heart?• Yourphonenumber?(Ordoyou

have it in speed dial so you don’t have to remember?)

• Youraddress?• YourSocialSecuritynumber?• Moviequotes?(“Hello,myname

is Innigo Montoya. You killed my father; prepare to die.”)

• Songlyrics?(“Justasmalltowngirl, living in a lonely world …”)

• Amemoryverseyoulearnedasa child? (“For God so loved the world …”)

We all memorize things, sometimes through intentional study (multiplication tables, the periodic table), and sometimes through accidental, repeated exposure (commercial jingles). I want all of us to memorize our vision and mission statements. This will happen as you and I intentionally review these phrases, and as we seek in our preaching, publications, and practices to keep these aims front and center. Knowing these words doesn’t guarantee that we’ll live by them, but it’s unlikely we’ll live by them if we don’t know them. Finishing this latest teaching series doesn’t mean our emphasis on going DEEP is over; it simply means that like never before, we’re ready to act on God’s instructions. What will your next step be?

Yours because I’m His,

Tim HawkinsWow! What a Show!Thank you to the many volunteers who helped put the show together and showed hospitality to our guests. We applaud you and appreciate your time in volunteering to make our events at GCC successful!

We are not finished tallying the grand total we were able to give to Care Net, but we are sure it is well over $20,000 . Thank you for sharing the love of Jesus through giving!

Urgent! If you still have a baby bottle to return to us, PLEASE BRING IT TO THE WELCOME CENTER NOW! Care Net needs to distribute those bottles to other churches who are also helping them. PLEASE RETURN THEM NOW! Thank you!

On behalf of the Staff, Volunteers and Board Members of Care Net Pregnancy Centers of Central Indiana, I want to thank you all for blessing us with an incredible evening of laughter and fellowship last week. From the beautiful décor to the wonderful dinner and the amazing performances by Tim and John – it blessed us all beyond words. We know that many “man-hours” went into this event and we pray that God will redeem that time for you and bless you all for your labor of love. You even managed to coordinate a Baby Bottle Campaign at the same time! Wow! Thank you seems so small – but it is sincere – thank you!

Blessings,

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw

earthquake. Its epicenter was near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. The earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. As of Feb. 12, an estimated three million people were affected by the quake; the Haitian Government reports that between 217,000 and 230,000 people had been identified as dead, an estimated 300,000 injured, and an estimated 1,000,000 homeless. The death toll is expected to rise. They also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged.

We all have been made aware of the Haitian tragedy as described above but we wanted to share some positive details of how God is working in the midst of this tragedy and to thank you for the support shown during this time of great need.

Like many across the globe, GCC started collecting donations for Haitian Disaster Relief. In a little less than one month your donations surpassed $10,000.00…and the

donations keep coming in! Last count was $13,327.35! What an exciting testimony of your love for Jesus and others. The World Evangelism Ministry team met on February 16th and decided to disburse the initial donations, even though your generous giving continues! We chose two GCC supported missions, Lifeline and F.A.M.E., to equally disperse the funds. Following are updates from both organizations. Visit either of these web-sites for regularly updated information or sign up to receive the news emails. You will be blessed!

LIFELINE CHRISTIAN MISSIONhttp://www.lifeline.org/index.html

February 20, 2010

Gretchen DeVoe, Lifeline’s co-found-er, shares this story “from the eyes of a Haitian” of their experience on January 12 and some brief updates from the mission field.

Gretchen writes: Yesterday I asked Marie Ange (one of Therese’s daughters who also works with us; Lifeline provides jobs to over 300 Haitians) to tell me where she was and what she experienced on January 12. She said she was in her mother-in-laws’ home, which is made of boards, stick and mud. (They call these “mason houses” but they resemble an adobe home with boards; they are some of the most modest housing in Haiti. The name is deceiving because they are not masonry homes nor do they have blocks in them.) Anyway, Marie Ange said she was in the house when she felt the house begin to shake violently and that she immediately ran out of the house, into the yard and looked up in the sky

because she said “I thought Jesus was coming back!” This reminded me immediately of how the early church expected Christ’s return every day, probably every hour of every day. What is so important to share is that she has the faith and hope of the first century Christians! How many times do we think about Christ’s return as being “imminent”? I must confess I do not think of it that way. In my mind it is something that will happen “some day”. But I really need to ask Christ to give me a renewed certainty of His returning so that I can have that same sense of anticipation that Marie Ange has. Other News & Updates: We mentioned in our last update that hundreds are coming to Christ...we have learned of many more in our Lifeline churches who are giving their lives to Jesus. Over 150 have been baptized in 4 churches in the past few weeks...and 10 churches haven’t given updated reports yet. What can we say except that we have to trust in Christ and believe that His protection will continue AND that He is returning soon! Thank you for reading, writing, praying and giving. You are loved and we are grateful! ~Gretchen DeVoe

Stories from the Front LinesThank you for your continued prayers and support for the people of Haiti. We are beginning to get more information from our partners in Haiti, those serving on the front lines in the relief effort that continues in Haiti. I’d like to share two of those stories with you.

The first story is about Rene Goude, a FAME Impact Scholarship recipient. She is studying medicine in Port-Au-

Prince. Once she becomes a doctor she will serve with Haitian Christian Mission at the hospital FAME helped establish in Fonds Parisien, Haiti. On January 12, Rene was waiting outside her school to meet one of her instructors when the earthquake occurred. The school building collapsed and there are no known survivors who were in the building when it was destroyed. Rene was hit by some falling debris and suffered some injuries on her face. At last report she was receiving treatment at the Fonds Parisien Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. While we mourn the loss of life at the school and across Haiti, we praise God for His protection of Rene!

The second story comes from Cameron Mayhill, Director of Development at Northwest Haiti Christian Mission. Here is his part of his story in his own words: “FAME supplies helped Northwest Haiti Christian Mission provide an immediate response to the hurting people in Port-au-Prince. As we pulled supplies from storage, over 70% of the supplies that were packed on that truck came from FAME!”

Imagine being on the run for your life not sure where you will wind up and not sure if you will ever be

safe. That‘s just the beginning of Joy Hassan’s story. Joy Hassan is GCC’s worship intern and you can learn more about her remarkable early years and her mother’s ministry to Muslim Women by going to the Christian Broadcasting Network (www.cbn.com) Then look up “Nowhere to Hide - A Muslim Woman’ s Story “ in their search box or type in http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2009/September/Nowhere-to-Hide-A-Muslim-Womans-Story/ and go directly to the video and article about her mother and her family. (You will also see a cute picture of a younger Joy). Joy comes to us from Lincoln Christian University where she is a senior earning a Bachelor of Arts. Her primary focus is in worship. Joy has always been actively involved in worship activities. Early on she was mentored by one of the ministers on staff at Harvester Christian Church in St. Charles, Missouri (a suburb of Saint Louis). During that 2 year period Joy says that “her passion grew” and she committed to continue her growth by attending Bible College. Joy believes that worship is foundational to growing DEEP; “Worship is just not something we do or songs that we sing, but part of God’s overall plan for developing

a relationship with Christ.” This philosophy is based on the Bible, “I see worship in the Bible from beginning to end and am passionate to make worship more and more about God and who He is.” Her goal is to “help people grow in relationship with Christ and in relationship to each other through worship.” Joy also has a heart for helping women develop a deeper walk with Jesus. Joy’s interests and gifts also make her a great resource for young women. Joy has a passion for mentoring women to help them deepen their relationship with Jesus. Joy will be ministering with GCC until her graduation from Lincoln Christian University. She is not sure what God has planned for her after

graduation, but is willing to go wherever He leads. Make sure you introduce yourself to Joy. Take some time to get to know her. You will be blessed and inspired by her love for Jesus and her life’s story. Facts of interest

Three years ago Debbie Asbury realized the Women’s Ministry at

Greenwood Christian needed to start making preparation to take the next step toward the future. “I knew that in three years my youngest son Joel would be finishing college and that is when I had planned to stop working full-time.” Debbie wanted to make sure that the Women’s Ministry that she has led and grown would be in good hands for the future. Upon resigning, Debbie recommended to Eric Clouse, the chairman of the elders, Matt Giebler and David Strange that Kathy Stahlhut would be the best candidate for the job. Kathy was indeed offered the job and, after prayerful consideration she agreed to step into the role of the Director of Women’s Ministry. “Debbie and I share some of the same ideas and passions,” Kathy remarks. “One of Debbie’s passions has been to restore the idea of biblical womanhood through a foundation of Bible study and prayer.” Kathy intends to continue building on that foundation as well

The NEXT STEP for WOMEN’S MINISTRY

by developing an outreach focus for women to serve our community. Debbie and Kathy have many things in common. Both are long-time central Indiana residents, both have three sons, both love Jesus and have a desire to see Jesus’ image completely formed in the lives of the women of GCC. Debbie and Kathy both believe Women’s Ministry at Greenwood Christian is ready to head into the 21st Century. The vision for the ministry has always been the same as the church’s vision and will still reflect that vision - to carry on with the work of Jesus by loving God and loving others and in helping women go DEEP. Whether it is ladies gathered to

Debbie Asbury Kathy Stahlhut

minister to single mothers, knitting stocking caps for soldiers, supporting each other through the trials of life, or growing deeper into God’s Word, the Women’s Ministry has and will continue to make a difference for God’s Kingdom. So what will Debbie do with all of her free time? She hopes to spend more time with her sons and their families (Seth in Texas, Rett in North Carolina, and Joel wherever he lands after graduation). She still would like to teach, and help out here at GCC and in the community, although she is not exactly certain where God will lead her. She does want to take time to catch up on her reading and spend some time with her husband. Along with her new duties, Kathy will continue to oversee the big events at GCC and the Coffee Café. She will no longer be overseeing sports and recreation at GCC. We want to thank Debbie for her many years of remarkable service in women’s ministry. We will certainly miss her, and we want to wish Kathy God’s best as she takes the next step in following Jesus.

Revive Our Hearts presents True Woman 10 National Women’s Conference

Indianapolis Convention CenterSeptember 23-25, 2010

Speakers will be Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Mary Kassian, Fern Nichols, and Joni Erickson Tada to name a few. Worship Leaders Keith and Kristyn Getty will be here to lead God-glorifying worship. This will be a life-changing conference that is sure to sell out with a high school session going on at the same time with Dannah Gresh, author of Pursuing the Pearl, Secret Keeper and The Bride Wore White. Of all the women’s conferences that I’ve (Debbie Asbury) been to, I’d recommend this one over and over again to every woman and teen age girl. Registration began back in August and the early bird date for the best price is approaching and may even sell out soon as the ‘08 conference did, so go to www.reviveourhearts.com to read details and register now.

Relay For LifeGreenwood Middle SchoolJune 19 • 24-hour period

All cancer survivors, caretakers, friends, family and all those wanting to FIGHT BACK against cancer are invited to rally for a cause! Get your team in place and reserve the date of June 19th to walk the Relay for Life. The event is held at Greenwood Middle School for a 24 hour period where your team raises money for the number of laps they walk. Teammates sign up for a specific time to walk. The more people on your team, the more money you will raise! All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society in its mission to find a cure for this terrible disease. Our own Rhonda Irskens is the Chair for Greenwood’s Relay. Contact her for more information: 908-2219.

Registration for Camp Allendale summer sessions is underway. Costs for partner churches (GCC is a partner congregation) remain the same as the past two years but with one very important condition: you must register before April 1 to avoid a $50 fee increase. HeavenBound recognizes the tough economic times people face. Our basic scholarship program for members who need it will reduce the cost of a week at camp from $285 to $200. For families facing severe hardship, we can offer additional assistance. Elementary students from GCC will want to attend the week of June 6-11, if possible, because a number of our people will be directing sessions. Karen Wade will supervise rising second graders for a two-night introductory camp June 6-8 ($100 for our members). Tomi Lessaris will once again provide an inspiring week for rising 3rd and 4th grade girls, while Scott Pitts will offer an entertaining program for rising 3rd and 4th grade boys. Dave Lessaris will lead a coed week for rising 5th and 6th graders. Later in the summer, Tiffany Walls will put together a fun “tree house” session for rising 7th and 8th graders

June 20-25. Of course, we send children almost every week of the summer because of schedule conflicts and personal preference. Brochures, registration materials, and scholarship information will be distributed the weekend of February 13. Look for the bulletin board display across from Mister Scott’s office.

Last summer, the Christian-based company called Incredible Pizza arrived in Greenwood to remodel the old Kroger building next to Old Time Pottery on Highway 31 just north of the mall.

Anyone entering Incredible Pizza must purchase an all-you-can-eat buffet, geared toward kids but including a salad bar, potato bar, taco bar, a couple of meats, some vegetables, and desserts and drinks. The building also offers a glow-in-the-dark miniature golf course, a go-cart track, a bumper car area, lanes of mini-bowling, a huge video arcade, and a prize redemption center. In His day, the Savior’s words turned heads, turned hearts, and ultimately turned the world upside down. They do the same for us today. His words: our heritage. The words of Christ---discourses, parables, prayers, conversations. Eminently quotable. Undeniably powerful. Eternally true. Let the message that changed the world change your life forever. Prayer Focus

Pray theWord?!by Keith GrovesMinister of Discipleship

A great way to talk with God is to simply pray the words of scripture. Many of the Psalms were songs and/or prayers. David talked honestly with God about his praise for God, his frustrations, his needs and his fears. We can and should do the same. Take a look:

Psalm 145:1-3I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever. Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

Psalm 74:10-12 How long will the enemy mock you, O God? Will the foe revile your name forever? Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them! But you, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth.

Psalm 71:1-4 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;

let me never be put to shame. Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me. Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men.

Psalm 55:1-3 Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger.

Psalm 55:23But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.

Be honest with God (He can handle it!). Sometimes the exact words I feel have already been written in God’s Word - so I pray them! What an amazing God who hears, understands, and answers our prayers, because he loves us so much!
