The choir you are hearing today is a combined ensemble of boy trebles, ages seven through 13 and men who sing the alto, tenor and bass parts.Christ Church Cathedral has for many decades supported and sustained choirs trained in the English Cathedral tradition. Unique in its depth and breadth, instruction for the boys, girls and teens is based on the curriculum of the Royal School of Church Music. Children and youth deepen their sense of history, liturgy, language and art as well as their ability to interpret sacred texts and music. Through the ongoing effort of learning and working together, they also develop friendships and become part of a community that uplifts collective and individual efforts. Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, Kentucky, choristers learn what it is to be at the heart of vibrant worship.

Lisa Hall has served Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, Kentucky as Assistant Organist since February 2012. Psalm 111 Anglican chant by Herbert Howells

Hallelujah!I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.Great are the deeds of the LORD! * they are studied by all who delight in them. His work is full of majesty and splendor, * and his righteousness endures for ever.He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant. He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations. The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity. He sent redemption to his people;he commanded his covenant for ever; * holy and awesome is his Name. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; * those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures for ever.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Magnificat in B Charles Villiers Stanford Book of Common Prayer page 119 (1852-1924)

First Lesson Acts 14:8-18• silence is kept after each reading for reflection

The Lessons

In Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet and had never walked, for he had been crippled from birth. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. And Paul, looking at him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, said in a loud voice, ‘Stand upright on your feet.’ And the man sprang up and began to walk. When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, ‘The gods have come down to us in human form!’ Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates; he and the crowds wanted to offer sacrifice. When the apostles

Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting, ‘Friends, why are you doing this? We are mortals just like you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to follow their own ways; yet he has not left himself without a witness in doing good—giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filling you with food and your hearts with joy.’ Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.

Second Lesson Luke 7:36-50

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing

them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner.’ Jesus spoke up and said to him, ‘Simon, I have something to say to you.’ ‘Teacher,’ he replied, ‘speak.’ ‘A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?’ Simon answered, ‘I suppose the one for whom he cancelled the greater debt.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You have judged rightly.’ Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in

she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.’ Then he said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’ And he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’

The Prayers

The Lord’s Prayer • chanted by all

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.Amen

Suffrages Richard Ayleward

O Lord, show thy mercy upon us: and grant us thy salvation.O Lord, save the State: and mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.Endue thy ministers with righteousness: and make thy chosen people joyful.O Lord, save thy people: and bless thine inheritance.Give peace in our time, O Lord: Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.O God make clean our hearts within us: and take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

Anthem Rejoice in the Lord Alway Henry Purcell (1659-1695)

Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving • said by all

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side.We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

Music at the CathedralEstablished in 1822, Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest house of worship in Louisville. The Cathedral has and continues to uphold the highest standard for music and worship. While the great traditions of the church are at risk of being lost in our culture, the Cathedral desires to maintain our heritage of Anglican music and historical liturgies while always looking forward and being relevant in our world today. With this in mind, our worship reflects the contemplative nature of evening worship through Evensong to the joyous celebrations of the nativity and resurrection.

The Cathedral Choiris the resident choral ensemble at the Cathedral, singing all principal services. The choir also sings services for the Diocese of Kentucky, monthly Evensongs, and the annual Service of Lessons and Carols. A mixed choir of adults, the choir sings music from all eras, while focusing approximately fifty percent of their repertoire to music by American composers. The Cathedral Choir and Canon Bozeman have been featured on both local and national public radio programs numerous times. Recordings available by the Cathedral Choir include An American Evening: Music by American Composers and Lux Aeterna-Music spanning a thousand years with the common theme of light. You may purchase copies following evensong in the narthex or through the Cathedral website.

Join us for Eucharist each Sunday at 10:30 AM and visit the Cathedral’s website for additional service information.
