Dear Cathedralites On Friday some parishioners were able to share in our Cathedral the live-streaming of the funeral service for Peter Hawke, only son of Dean Mike and Patsy, brother to Lizzie and Sarah. The service was held in St Christopher's Anglican Church, Avonhead, Christchurch. Some from the Parish were able to attend the service in Christchurch. A Condolence book has been set up on a table adjacent to the Candle Stand by the Chapel. It is not too late to make an entry in it if you wish. Mike and Patsy are aware of the support for them from the Cathedral family and appreciate it very much. We are in the season of Epiphany, a period in which we recall events which reveal Jesus as Christ. One of those events is the presentation of Jesus in the Temple and we learn of that wonderful hymn we sing or say at Evensong, the Nunc Dimittus. In it, Simeon sees the glory of God in Jesus, glory that is not reserved for Israel alone but for all nations. After praising God in his hymn Simeon addresses Mary about her son's future. Her son will be a light for all, but a sword will pierce her heart. It is the foreshadowing of Jesus's passion and death. Epiphany teaches us from the beginning of Jesus's life that glory and suffering will be intertwined. Kind regards Graham Allan (Dean’s Warden) CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –31 st January 2021 The Presentation of Jesus In The Temple / Te Tapaenga O Te Karaiti I Te Temepara Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. The processions enter the Cathedral as we sing the opening hymn CP 369 1 All people that on earth do dwell,

sing to the Lord with cheerful voice Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him, and rejoice.

    2 The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;

Without our aid he did us make; We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take.

3 O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud and bless his name always, For it is seemly so to do.

    4 For why, the Lord our God is good;

His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.

5 To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,

The God whom heaven and earth adore, From men and from the angel-host Be praise and glory evermore.

    The Invitation and the Confession

Minister of the Liturgy Hear God’s word to all who turn to Christ:

Jesus said: “There is joy among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:10

God has promised forgiveness to all who truly repent, turn to Christ in faith and are themselves forgiving. In silence we call to mind our sins. Let us confess our sins.

All Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Absolution is pronounced by the Bishop

Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on you, pardon you and set you free. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. God strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal. Amen. Please stand as we celebrate our forgiveness by saying the Gloria. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: Have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

The Proclamation of the Word The Old Testament Lesson

Malachi 3:1-4 read by David Brown

1 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like

fullers’ soap; 3 he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteous-ness. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

14 Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the

descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church All Thanks be to God We stand to sing the Gradual Hymn ‘Fairest Lord Jesus (HFTC)

1 Fairest Lord Jesus, Lord of all creation, Jesus, of God and man the Son; you will I cherish, you will I honour, you are my soul’s delight and crown.

    2 Fair are the rivers,

Meadows and forests Clothed in the fresh green robes of spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes the saddest heart to sing.

    3 Fair is the sunrise,

Starlight and moonlight Spreading the glory across the sky; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines clearer, Than all the heavenly host on high.

    4 All fairest beauty,

heavenly and earthly, Jesus, my Lord, in you I see; None can be nearer, Fairer or dearer, Than You, my Saviour, are to me.

22 When the time came for their purifica-tion according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’ 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Je-sus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,29 ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the pres-ence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation

to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ 33 And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Sim-eon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ 36 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and be-gan to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the re-demption of Jerusalem. 39 When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.

We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

    The Peace

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you. Celebrant E te whanau, we are the body of Christ. All By one Spirit we were baptised into one body. Celebrant Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. All Amen. We are bound by the love of Christ.

Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 277

    The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty.

All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we

    give you.

1 All for Jesus, all for Jesus, this our song shall ever be; for we have no hope, nor Saviour, if we have not hope in Thee. 2 All for Jesus, thou wilt give us strength to serve Thee, hour by hour; none can move us from Thy presence while we trust thy love and power. 3 All for Jesus, at Thine altar Thou wilt give us sweet content; there, dear Lord, we shall receive thee in the solemn sacrament.

4 All for Jesus, Thou hast loved us; all for Jesus, Thou hast died; all for Jesus, Thou art with us; all for Jesus crucified. 5 All for Jesus, all for Jesus, this the church’s song must be, till, at last, we all are gathered one in love and one in Thee.

Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise. Celebrant It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty

Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son.

You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have cre-ated all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us.

In Him we see You, the eternal God, revealing Your glory in our flesh, for He is the light of the nations who illuminates our darkness.

When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit.

Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Please kneel or be seated Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he died

your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me.

After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me.

All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

  • 12

The Celebrant continues Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.

All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen.

    The Communion

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen.

Those in the sanctuary receive communion

    The Invitation

Minister of Liturgy Please stand to sing our final Hymn CP 453

1 Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with Thee; thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not; as Thou hast been Thou for ever wilt be:

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed Thy hand has provided, great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

2 Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love:

Great is Thy faithfulness… 3 Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

    5.30 pm readings 1 Samuel 3:1-20

1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the LORD called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ and he said, ‘Here I am!’ 5 and ran to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call; lie down again.’ So, he went and lay down. 6 The LORD called again, ‘Samuel!’ Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call, my son; lie down again.’ 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. 8 The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, ‘Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, “Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.”’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’ 11 Then the LORD said to Samuel, ‘See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfil against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 For I have told him that I am about to punish his house for ever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering for ever.’ 15 Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, ‘Samuel, my son.’ He said, ‘Here I am.’ 17 Eli said, ‘What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.’ 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, ‘It is the LORD; let him do what seems good to him.’ 19 As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the LORD.

    1 Corinthians 14:12-20

12 So with yourselves; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church. 13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unproduc-tive. 15 What should I do then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will sing praise with the mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you say a blessing with the spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say the ‘Amen’ to your thanksgiving, since the outsider does not know what you are say-ing? 17 For you may give thanks well enough, but the other person is not built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you; 19 nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers and sisters, do not be children in your thinking; rather, be infants in evil, but in thinking be adults.

    PRAYERS

ST BARNABAS PRAYER Sunday 31 January 2021

Heavenly Father, we lift to You the Christian women and girls of Pakistan, so vulnerable and in need of Your protection. Watch over each one as she goes about her daily life and keep her safe from any who would seek to kidnap her by force or trickery. Be especially close to the many Christian widows, struggling to provide for their children, and protect them in a context where they are triply despised – for being Christian, for being female and for being widowed. May they always feel Your loving presence with them. We pray in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

    Nelson Cathedral CHRISTIAN MEDITATION

Meditation is not something new. Rather it is central to the Christian experience and deeply rooted in Christian tradition. Meditation, also known as contemplative prayer, is the prayer of silence and listening.

This is the aim given by the Psalmist “Be still and know that I am God.”

All are welcome to join us for this ecumenical prayer- a time of silence, stillness and reflection. Come and join our small, friendly community of Christian meditators. It is suitable for everyone,

    and easy to learn.

Every Tuesday evening from 5.30 – 6.30 pm The Chapel in the Cathedral,

Trafalgar Square Mary Kroch 027 3721173 or Allen Michel 548 3337

All are welcome to this very ancient practice of

making room for Jesus to speak into our busy lives.
