CHRIST CHURCH WEEKLY ACTIVITIES
PASTORAL LETTER OCTOBER 2014
I am intrigued by the way in which the ‘selfie’ has become so popular. A few days ago on a local train journey I saw three young women unselfconsciously using their mobile phones as if they were hand mirrors for personal grooming, and then taking photographs of themselves in various poses without concern for the watching audience of fellow travellers. Their public posturing, no doubt, made them instant media stars as their efforts winged their way to their social media page, rather than just finding a place in some dusty half-forgotten family album. An expert on social media has said that the "selfie is revolutionising the way we gather autobiographical information about ourselves and our friends… it's about continuously rewriting yourself… presenting yourself in the best way…” The self-portrait, on the other hand, has been one way in which painters have traditionally practised their art, experimented with new techniques, or just saved themselves the cost of paying for a model. Rembrandt painted himself many times for the reasons already stated, and the results show how his face reflects his life experience and inner development. On holiday recently we saw an exhibition of paintings by L.S. Lowry (famous for his ‘match stick men’ in paintings of urban scenes in Pendlebury and Salford in the North West of England). Lowry also knew and loved Berwick-on-Tweed, and painted many pictures there of the sea and coastline. Among other such paintings in the exhibition was one of a seascape with a single post sticking out of it, entitled ‘self-portrait’. There was no sign of Lowry except (as the catalogue suggested) the extent to which it

represented his loneliness and sense of distinctiveness from the world around him. Two things come to mind from these experiences: 1) What does it mean for us to be a ‘Church for all people’? Whether we are the kind who would happily join in a corporate ‘selfie’ on a busy train, or we tend to be more introspective and solitary, the church in its worship, learning and care is committed to being a community that embraces everybody. That ought to be a permanent item on our agendas. Are we achieving it? It goes beyond different personality types, of course. What does it mean for us to be part of a church committed to maintaining Jesus’s wide embrace to all, as well as the challenging day-to-day task of being a supportive and learning community of disciples to one another? 2) Whatever Lowry’s ‘self-portrait’ of a single post sticking out of the sea meant to the artist, it can remind us as a Church of the times we are called to stand out from the surrounding landscape as a beacon or helpful sign of faith and hope. We do it, of course, in many personal, unassuming and neighbourly ways, but there are also times for action together. Jesus referred to both when he spoke about the inner strength and outer testimony of those he called to be his first disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled underfoot. ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket,

but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. (Matthew 5.13-15) We are not called to fame but to effectiveness as Jesus’ disciples - individually and together. By God’s grace, may we persevere and find new joy in it. God bless you

NOVEMBER 2014 NEWSLETTER
NEWS FROM GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Below are some excerpts of news from the United Reformed Church General Assembly, which was held in July 2014. Full details of these news items can be found on the URC website at www.urc.org.uk New moderator inducted Rev David Grosch-Miller was inducted as moderator of the United Reformed Church General Assembly, serving from 2014 to 2016. In the worship that followed, Mr Grosch-Miller’s daughter, Susan Vieira da Silva, sung a hymn composed for Assembly by Carla Grosch-Miller, his wife and chaplain. Lively farewell from outgoing moderator After being inducted into the role of Assembly moderator, Rev David Grosch-Miller gave heartfelt thanks to Rev Michael Jagessar, the outgoing moderator; to Rev Leonora Jagessar-Visser’t Hooft, Mr Jagessar’s wife; and to Melanie Smith, Mr Jagessar’s chaplain. Rev Michael Jaggesar, the retiring moderator of General Assembly, gave his parting reflections in a lively speech. Asking “what would the church look like if all of us become humble learners?”, he called on those in the church who disagree theologically to listen more graciously to one another. He said: “When our personal and ideological preferences become greater than our passion for the gospel, we are skating on thin ice. For when we become wrapped up in self, we miss the opportunities knocking at our doors.” He described his time as moderator as “filled with surprises, joys, frustrations, much learning, and mischievous moments.”
NEWS FROM GENERAL ASSEMBLY continued...
Future of the Church General Assembly discussed the future of the United Reformed Church and passed three resolutions intended to: affirm the URC’s identity as both united and Reformed; affirm its gift of conciliarity; and match a need - the lack of ministers - with the Reformed gift of eldership. It was agreed the Faith and Order committee should bring a proposal to the 2016 Assembly. John Proctor appointed as general secretary Rev John Proctor was formally appointed as general secretary of the United Reformed Church. John trained for the ministry in Glasgow, where he served in a parish from 1981 to 1986, before he moved on to Westminster College in Cambridge - teaching the New Testament. He later held the position of vice-principal of Westminster College. Introducing his appointment, moderator Rev David Grosch-Miller paid tribute to the enormous contribution Rev Proctor has already made to the church through his 28 years of service at Westminster. His term of office will briefly overlap with that of the current general secretary, Rev Rominger, who will formally step down from the role on 31 July 2014. Assembly says farewell to Roberta Rominger A “liturgy of letting go” was delivered by Rev David Grosch-Miller, moderator of the General Assembly, for the farewell of Rev Roberta Rominger, whose role as general secretary of the United Reformed Church formally comes to an end on 31 July 2014. David gave a heartfelt speech saying: “Roberta, you have

touched lives and changed them for the better. You have been a courageous and inspirational general secretary; you have given without reserve… you are a woman with rare gifts and abilities; there is no more inspirational speaker in the church than you.” Roberta, said: “Ministry is all one, there are different spheres of service… I love the church with all my heart… it has been the most awesome and amazing privilege, thank you!” Resolution on marriage of same-sex couples General Assembly passed a resolution inviting synods and local congregations to discuss whether they would wish a future meeting of the Assembly to authorise local church meetings to offer same-sex marriage services, and to report their views to the general secretary by 31st March 2015. The resolution recognised that: “A clear majority of members of Assembly expressed the view that local congregations should be permitted to offer same-sex marriage to those who seek that opportunity. However, because our decision-making process is based on the seeking of full consensus, Assembly was unable to reach agreement.” Fuller information can be found on the URC website. Assembly endorses inclusive language The General Assembly endorsed the consideration of inclusive and expansive language in worship. The resolution, which built on Assembly’s 1984 commitment to inclusive language, was passed by agreement once an amendment was made to give due consideration to the use of imagery, as well as words, in worship.
THAMES NORTH SYNOD NEWS
Below is a short extract of the Thames North Synod’s report from General Assembly 2014. The report of the Faith and Order Committee on the Future of the United Reformed Church was dealt with under three resolutions. It is obvious that hours of work have gone into this report which was thorough-going, logically developed and well presented. Over the coming year we are asked to consider the resolutions and submit responses. The first resolution (Resolution 11) affirmed the Church’s future and commended the paper What is the Spirit saying to Churches? A variety of scenarios was suggested ranging from simple maintenance of the status quo which may result in slow decline, to manifestations of uniting churches, debranded churches and cyber churches. The identity of the United Reformed Church is regarded as vital, with the Church’s values and passions clearly and usefully set out. Affirming our primary identity in our understanding of the triune God, the renewal of congregational life is regarded as the key to the Church’s future. The fact that congregations vary makes us recognise that one size does not fit all, but that learning from a variety of insights is vital together with the Church’s rootedness in the purposes of God and discernment of the Holy Spirit. The second resolution (Resolution 12) was with regard to the United Reformed Church’s ‘gift of conciliarity’. The Church is encouraged to produce resources which enhance our theological understanding on conciliarity, find ways of enabling greater discernment of the mind of Christ, reflect on the nature of church membership and communicate stories of creative church life. Comments are again invited by the Faith and Order Committee. Conciliarity has many
THAMES NORTH SYNOD NEWS continued...
dimensions but was essentially defined as the way in which the Holy Spirit speaks to the Church through different councils. This paper concentrated on the local congregation but also recognised that much needs to be done in interpreting conciliarity in Synods and General Assembly. A range of comments had been received regarding the experience of conciliarity at local level and the danger of badly chaired church meetings, bullying and misuse of power, duplicated agendas, skirting around issues and focussing on business rather than worship, prayer and reflection on God’s mission for the Church. Rather, again the discernment of the marks of the influence of the Holy Spirit of God need to be explored. The third resolution (Resolution 13) was with regard to the nature of ministry, specifically eldership. There is a variety of understanding, probably reflecting the differing backgrounds of the constituent denominations which made up the United Reformed Church. Thus much of the debate surrounded the issue of presidency at the Lord’s Supper and whether or not a particular service in question is a ministry of word and sacraments, thus demanding ordination. Questions regarding the purpose of ordination, the nature of elders, the distinction between the ordination of ministers and that of elders could provide material for debate for an age. Realising this, the report recognises that the mind of the church needs to be tested and an exploration needs to be made regarding the possibility that some elders may be called to celebrate the sacraments within their own congregations. For this the Spirit’s guidance is sought.
John Parry, September 2014 A full version of this report can be seen on request from Stephen Gilburt, Church Secretary.
3RD ENFIELD BB SUMMER CAMP
On Saturday 23rd August a group of young people and leaders from the 3rd Enfield BB, 10th Enfield BB and 1st Winchmore Hill GB travelled to Beeston Regis in Norfolk for our Summer Camp. Throughout the week the young people got to take part in a number of activities, both on site and off site. On site activities included sports such as football, rounders and cricket, board games such as Monopoly and chess, a BBQ, quiz, devotions, water games and a water fight. Off site activities included a day out at Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park, trips to the beach and shopping in local towns (Cromer, Sheringham and King’s Lynn), cinema, pitch and putt, go karting in Cromer, bowling, swimming and a boat tour to see the seals at Wells-next-the-Sea. On the final evening (Thursday) there was a karaoke evening in the main marquee, where everyone got the chance to sing some of their favourite songs! Throughout the week there were devotions sessions each day, where we look more in to the Bible and talk about and discuss different topics. This year, the devotions were themed around the Parables of Jesus. Each day we looked at a different Parable and had some interesting and thought provoking discussions. 2014 was certainly another fantastic camp, with lots of activities going on and lots of fun had by everyone. We’re already looking forward to our next camp in 2015! Some photos can be seen on the next page.

3RD ENFIELD BB TRIP TO WHIPSNADE
On Saturday 20th September, members of the 3rd Enfield’s Anchor Boys and Junior Section joined with others from Enfield Battalion for a trip to Whipsnade Zoo. We travelled to Whipsnade by coach and once we were there, the boys got the chance to look around the zoo and see all different kinds of animals including lions, tigers, elephants, penguins, camels, giraffes, monkeys, rhinos, bears, wolves and many, many more. During the day we were also taken by minibus on a mini safari, around parts of the zoo which aren’t accessible by foot. There was also the opportunity for the boys make some origami elephants in a world record attempt being run by the zoo, and also time to run off some energy on the play area! A fantastic day was had by all and we express our thanks to all those who organised it. Check out some photos below...
