Thank you so much to those who helped the Ridley Family in need. There is still a need for used furniture as everything they possessed was destroyed by the landlord. Pilates Classes are being held in Musselman Hall, at Christ Church, on Saturday mornings. The sessions are one hour long, and begin at 9:30 AM. Pilates is a unique system of stretching and toning the muscles to improve flexibility and balance, and relies on strengthening the body’s core muscles. If you are interested in going to Seaman’s’ church Institute please give Judy Buck-Glenn a note, an email or a voicemail. We still need some items for the ditty bags—please look at the spread sheet in the back and sign up! (The Outreach Committee will also happily take a donation for items and go out and buy them!)

Holy Eucharist with Baptism

A Note on Today’s Readings

Proper 29: The Reign of Christ or Christ the King—Year C

Today is the final Sunday of the church year. It is the celebration of the reign of Christ over all creation. The gospel reading presents Christ’s kingship in its most dramatic moment, when he rules over the earth from his cross. At this moment when he seemed the most despised and rejected of people, he forgives the penitent thief crucified with him and promises that he would be with him in paradise. This is the central paradox of the Christian proclamation. Our eternal ruler revealed his power by putting power aside and dying to save the world he created.

The first reading from Jeremiah brings God’s condemnation on the rulers of Judah who are evil shepherds. God will come in person to gather all the lost sheep who had been betrayed by those unworthy shepherds. God will be the shepherd of the people and will raise up a righteous king from the family of David to care for the people. For the first Christians, this reading was taken to refer to Jesus.

In the letter to the Colossians, the writer uses what is though to have been an early Christian hymn to express his most exalted statement of the cosmic meaning of the Christ. Jesus Christ is the fullness of God, the source and origin of all that is, and the saving ruler of the universe who seals his rule with the blood of his cross.

In the Eucharist, we bring all the world into the risen presence of its Lord, that the world through him might be saved. Here we acclaim the ruler and sovereign of all things who is also our savior, our brother, and our lover.

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading Jeremiah 23:1-6

All sit.

A Reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah.

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

Deus noster refugium

1 God is our refuge and strength, * a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, * and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;

3 Though its waters rage and foam, * and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.

4 The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

5 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, * the holy habitation of the Most High.

6 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; * God shall help her at the break of day.

7 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; * God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away.

8 The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

9 Come now and look upon the works of the LORD, * what awesome things he has done on earth.

10 It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; * he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire.

11 “Be still, then, and know that I am God; * I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.”

12 The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Second Reading Colossians 1:11-20

A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Church in Colossus.

May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all

things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Thanksgiving Over the Water

The Celebrant then says

The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest or deacon, who then immerses, or pours water upon, the candidate, saying

Paul Joseph, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

When this action has been completed for all the candidates, the Bishop or Priest, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying

Page 21: Christ Churchchristchurchridleypark.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/2010-11-21...2 Welcome to Christ Church! We are delighted that you are worshipping with us. All baptized persons

21

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

Then the Bishop or Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross [using Chrism if desired] and saying to each one

Paul Joseph you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.

After the Baptism, the Clergy, baptizand, parents and sponsors process to the front of the church. The organist will play processional music.

The Celebrant then says

Let us welcome the newly baptized.

Celebrant and People

We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

Peace

All stand.

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. Then the Ministers and the People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The people stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation.

Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his

friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Celebrant then continues

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread

A period of silence is kept.

Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The Celebrant says

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All baptized persons, whatever your denominational affiliation, are welcome to receive Holy Communion at our altar. You may stand at the altar rail if your knees do not permit kneeling. Please assist the chalice bearer by gently holding the base of the chalice. Please do not hold the top of the chalice. If you wish, you may intinct (dip) the host (consecrated bread) in the chalice. If you do not wish to receive the wine, fold your arms over your chest. Baptized children may receive with parent's permission, otherwise they will receive a blessing.

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People

God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Blessing

The priest blesses the people, saying

May the Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, giving you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and to proclaim the wonderful works of God; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
