We will seek God’s will, share God’s love, and serve as Christ’s people.
Christ Lutheran News August - September, 2016
God of shop and marketplace, Of farm and studio,
Factory and shipping lane, Of school and busy home:
Bless the produce of our hands. Redeem our work for Kingdom-use.
By Your grace, our efforts stand, All offered up to You.
There in Eden, You proclaimed That we should work the earth —
Stewards over all we named, Delighting in their worth.
Through our fall we brought decay, Lost access to Jehovah’s rest.
Through the cross, we rest in faith And all our labor’s blessed. In Your image we are made:
Creative like You are, Forming goods for use and trade
Just like You formed the stars. Send us out in power and skill
To worship through each task assigned. By Your Spirit we fulfill The holy, grand design.

When someone asks you, “What’s on your mind?” how do you respond? Do you tell them the truth? Are you even able to describe what’s on your mind? Or do your thoughts and your feelings get all mixed up so that it becomes difficult to make sense of what is hap-pening?
When Paul wrote to the Philippians, he included the words I shared above from Philippians 4:8 as advice for us about the kinds of thoughts we are to dwell on. Another way of saying this is to “practice mindfulness”.
Some people call this “flipping our thinking”. When we flip our thinking from negative thoughts, fears and anxieties to the things Paul writes of like “whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing and commendable”, we flip the cycle where negative thoughts lead to negative feelings and then negative behavior to a cycle that begins with the kind of thinking Paul lists, and leads to things worthy of praise.
So, dear friends, what’s on your mind? Are you living in the freedom we have because of Jesus Christ that helps us to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing and commendable? Or are you stuck in a cycle that is full of fear, anxiety, anger and doubt? This matters for us as a community, a church and especially during this election season, as a nation. Pay attention to the places where your mind wanders. If those places lead to undesir-

“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, what-ever is honorable, whatever is just, what-ever is pure, whatever is pleasing, what-

able feelings, try “flipping them”, drawing on Paul’s words from Philippians, trusting in God’s grace and mercy to help you.
As we enter into a busy fall in our congregations, pay atten-tion as well to how and where you focus your attention and energy. Consider the gifts and the resources that God has given you and how you might loosen your grip on those things and generously share them with the same attitude that Paul suggests in his letter to the Philippians. Hold tight to God’s promises and be assured that you are and always will be a precious Child of God.
See you in church!

Introducing “WWAM”! (Wednesdays With A Mission)
It is our mission at Christ Lutheran Church to “seek God’s will, share God’s love, and serve as Christ’s people.” In keeping with this mission, Wednesday evenings at Christ Lutheran will include opportunities for individuals and families to gather for a time of fellowship, service, worship and a meal. While some things will remain the same on Wednesdays, other things have changed. In addition, several opportunities have been added specifically for youth in grades 3-6 and 10-12. The schedule will begin Wednesday, September 14 and will in-clude the following:
5:30 – 6:00 pm—Youth Choir for Grades 3-6 directed by Theresa Nysetvold
6:00 – 6:40 pm—A simple meal will be served for all ages.
6:40 – 8:00 pm – Confirmation for Grades 7-9 which will include a time of worship as it is described below. There will be four opportunities throughout the year for small group service projects and fellowship.
6:40 – 7:00 pm – Worship in Sanctuary – this will be a brief time of worship for all ages. It will include music, prayer and scripture. Worship leaders including musi-cians, ushers and power point helpers are needed.
7:00 – 8:00 pm – Church Choir
In addition, we are hoping to periodically offer Wednesday evening service, fellowship and milestone ministry opportuni-ties to Grades 3-6 and their families.
With these new opportunities being developed, the after-school program (a.k.a. w.a.L.k.) will not be offered at this time. All families are encouraged to make W.W.A.M. at Christ Lu-theran a regular part of their Wednesday evenings.
If you would like to help in any way with making this happen, please contact the church office or one of the pastors at Christ Lutheran Church.

Junior High Youth Gathering November 19-20, 2016 in Willmar, MN
This event is sponsored by the Lutheran Youth Organiza-tion of the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA. It is open to youth in grades 7-9 and will include some great music, worship and time with new and old friends. The gathering happens at the Willmar Conference Center with lodging at the adjacent hotels. Approximate cost is $60 plus spending money. Adult leaders and drivers are needed. Please contact Pastor Dawn if you want to help or have any questions. Registration forms are available in the church office and should be completed in full and returned with payment by Monday, October 3rd.
Your help is needed to make Wednesday night meals at Christ Lutheran happen. The Youth Committee has agreed to oversee these meals and welcome your involvement. If you are willing to donate food, time or resources for these meals, please contact a member of the youth committee or the church office. We will begin serving meals on Wednes-day, September 14.
A new Senior High Community Ministry will be of-fered this fall by Patrick and Colleen Freeman in their home. It will be held on Wednesday evenings begin-ning at 7:00 pm and will include Bible study and time to hang out with friends. This is for all Senior High youth grades 10-12, regardless of church affiliation.

Service of Healing—Sunday, September 25
Our Health Ministry Team requested that our congregation have a Service of Healing, preferably on a Sunday morning when many could access it. We have scheduled that for Sunday, September 25
th at our normal worship time—10:15
AM.
Healing of both soul and body was certainly an important part of Jesus’ ministry. The Gospels are filled with ac-counts of Jesus casting out demons and healing people of various diseases. The book of Acts also has some ac-counts of the disciples continuing this healing ministry (for example, Acts 3:1-10).
This service will center on the theme of healing, recognizing that there are many forms of healing that we need—of short-term or chronic ailments, of emotional and mental health challenges, of relationships with other individuals, and of divisions within our country and world. There will be an op-portunity for individuals to come forward to one of several stations set up for individual prayer and anointing with oil. We will not promise that everyone will leave the service cured, but Jesus’ healing can come in many ways.
God has blessed us with good doctors, and wise counsel-ors, and this service is not intended to replace the need for those. Rather, it is an opportunity to pray for and with one another—laying our needs before God. This is in keeping with the encouragement in James 5:13-16, “Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.”
Plan to be with us for this special worship service on Sep-tember 25
th.

Third Graders will receive their Bibles from Christ
Lutheran during the 10:15 am worship service on Sunday, September 18. On that same day during Sunday school at 9:00 am, Pastor Dawn will join the third graders and their parents for a special event marking this milestone. This will include an introduction to the Bible, helpful tips and ideas for family and personal devotions and suggestions for family rituals and traditions centered around scripture.
Third graders and their parents are asked to attend this event on September 18 and then stay for worship, when there will be a special time set aside to for a blessing and presentation of Bibles.
Blessing of the Backpacks and a “Back to School Noisy Offering” will happen on Saturday, Au-
gust 27 and Sunday, August 28 during worship at Christ Lu-theran Church. Students of all ages are encouraged to bring their backpacks and book bags that day and we will pray for God’s blessings as they prepare for a new school year. In addition, a special “Noisy Offering” will be received that will be given to the Murray County Central Children’s Fund. This fund provides funds for students throughout the year who might have an emergency need of some kind. For instance, if a student needs certain clothing items for a concert and is unable to purchase them, this fund will pay for such items. In addition, school staff and faculty can re-quest funds to help pay for supplies and other educational items for specific students.
Please plan to join us that weekend in worship and bring all of your extra change so you can help us make some noise in support of our schools and our students.

How to Build Healthy and Happy Communities for Our Kids
to Grown Up In
Turn off your TV
Know your neighbors
Greet people you pass by
Listen to the birds and the sounds of kids playing
Bake extra and share
Ask for help when you need it
Help others when they need it
Seek to understand others
Share what you learn
Open your window shades
Sit ‘out front’ instead of ‘out back’
Turn up the music
Turn down the music
Go to bed happy and wake up happy!

Prayer Requests
Has something come up in your life recently that you want your church to pray about? Perhaps you have received some difficult news. Or, maybe you have a reason to re-joice and you want to share this good news. Regardless of what your concern is, we want to hear from you and pray with and for you. Whether your concern is personal or a shared concern about something happening in the world, please communicate to us your concerns and prayer re-quests. Please be sure to indicate if this is something you want included in the more “public” church prayers of inter-cession, one of the church prayer chains or if this is a more private concern that you only want to share with the pas-tors. We will honor your specific request.
You may make prayer requests by speaking with one of the pastors, or, if it is during the week, to the church office sec-retary, Dawn Mouw. If your concern arises over the week-end, you may give your written prayer request to an usher and ask them to pass it along to a pastor. This is especially helpful if there is late-breaking world or community news. As the pastors prepare for worship and lead services at Faith before coming to Christ Lu-theran they may not be on top of the latest news.
Thank you for helping us to be a community that lifts one another’s concerns to God in prayer.
