CHRIST CHRONICLE

Christ Lutheran Church and School 7701 Candelaria Road NE Albuquerque, NM 87110

From the Pastor

Dear friends in Christ,

Having just returned from a vaca-

tion to visit family and friends (I

hope they are not reading this!) I

was reminded of a simple truth:

Time does not stand still. We know

this intuitively, but when you see

people you haven’t seen for a year

or two, the subtle changes of aging

are much more apparent. A few

more wrinkles, more white hair in

the beard, perhaps a little more

weight, and a little slower move-

ment. Those are just my changes – I

won’t even mention theirs!

Time does not stand still! Our world

changes around us. Cultures

change. Values change. Even lan-

guage changes. The one and only

constant through all of this change

is the One who stands outside of

time – Almighty God. The Bible

teaches us: He is the same yester-

day, today and forever.

With an unchanging God we receive

the bounty of His unchanging gifts

to us: Faith, Hope and Love; Grace,

Mercy and unconditional For-

giveness; His Word, Baptism and

Holy Communion; His presence in

Worship and in our lives; His atten-

tion to the Salvation of our souls.

With the storms raging around us in

our culture and our world we can

turn, like the psalmist, to God and

be still. “Be still and know that I AM

God.” Be still and know the peace

that passes all understanding. Be

still and wait for the voice that

comes in a whisper. Be still and

watch the storms beat against the

solid foundation of Christ our Lord,

who as the Word made flesh, stands

forever. “The grass withers and the

flowers fade, but the Word of the

Lord Stands forever.”

The Word of the Lord stands forever!

It is this Word upon which God builds

His Kingdom. It is the Word that the

Holy Spirit uses to change lives. It is

the Word that enlightens, encour-

ages engages and

equips each of us

for life and service

to Christ. All we do

as Church and

School is centered

and focused on en-

lightening, encour-

aging, engaging,

and equipping peo-

ple (including you) to live in faith and

service to Christ. Faith we under-

stand. Service....well?

Yvon Prehn, in an article entitled:

Why you shouldn’t be satisfied with

less than 100% volunteer involve-

ment in your church, states:

“We’ve all heard: ‘20 percent of

the people do 80 percent of the

work.’ Sometimes those who

are in the over-worked 20 per-

cent in the church console

themselves that is simply how

life is and in the church we must

suffer for Jesus.

Though trials are part of the

Christian life, 20 percent of the

people doing 80 percent of the

work in the church is not an in-

evitable part of them. The

80/20 statement is merely a

business observation—it is not

scripture. The Bible tells us we

are to have 100 percent involve-

ment in the church. We make

up different parts of the Body of

Christ, but everyone has a job to

do... Christians are to practice

their spiritual gifts; they are the

volunteers who get ministry

work done. The work is shared,

no one burns out and everyone

grows in spiritual maturity as

they practice servanthood and

their spiritual gifts.”

Prehn, writes persuasively about be-

ing active disciples of Jesus Christ!

She reminds us in

clear fashion exactly

what Christ calls us to

be a do: “Be Doers of

the Word, not merely

hearers.” As disciples,

we are to follow Him

daily not when it is

convenient, or when it

fits!

I am always impressed when I look

at the level of active involvement we

have here at Christ Lutheran. We by

far surpass the “80/20 rule." I do

not say “thank you” often enough to

all of you who give so much of your

time and talents to serve our Lord

and His Kingdom, so let me say it to

you now: THANK YOU! Without your

dedication to our mission and minis-

try, we could not accomplish as

much as we do. That being said,

there is always room for more! As

God lays His path before us, I am a

firm believer that He also provides

the disciples to accomplish the work

He intends for us to do. My encour-

agement to all of you is to prayerfully

consider how you may serve God in

your life and in His Kingdom here at

Christ Lutheran. Let’s aim for

100/100 and trust the Holy Spirit to

move us there!

In the service of Christ,

Pastor Groeling

CHRIST CHRONICLE

From the Principal

Mark von Soosten

It’s hard to believe that one year ago we

were in the middle of finishing off the

offices and the education building.

The past year in our new office area has been won-

derful (once people figured out how to find us.) This

year’s work in the sanctuary required chapel to

sometimes move to the Parish Hall (along with our

last band and choir concert), but that all worked out

fine. We are all looking forward to seeing the results

of the chancel renovations.

Another new project happening this summer is an

upgrade of the school’s playground. Towards the

end of July and into early August you will see con-

struction of new playground equipment along with

leveling and paving the dirt area in front of the pre-

school building in order to give the students a place

to play basketball and four square. More than

$30,000 has already been raised for this project. If

you would like to make a donation towards this pro-

ject, you can do so online at the school’s website or

by designating a regular donation to go to the play-

ground fund. You can also designate funds raised

through purchasing Scrip to go to the playground

fund.

Thanks again to everyone that has supported Christ

Lutheran School through their time, treasure, and

prayers. I am always amazed by what the Lord

makes it possible for us to do through His people.

In Christ,

Mark von Soosten

God Is Awesome!!!

I Love Watching Him Work!

Hard to believe summer is not only here, but moving as

fast as it can. Soon it will be August – school will be

starting back up. We will be getting back in a regular

groove…and we will be celebrating new and wonderful

ways God is working in our Congregation.

We will have air conditioning making our Worship more

comfortable for us and our visitors. We will have no-

step Communion making it easier for our more mature

congregants and also those that have had accidents

but want to come up toward the Altar to enjoy The

Lord’s Supper.

We will have video options to help enhance Worship

and a Beautiful Chancel area for those who gather in

small and large settings. We will have a newly de-

signed and built north campus area, put together in

unity and love with our Congregation and our school

families.

God has lots of good things happening. He is amazing

and what He is doing here at Christ Lutheran Church

and School is simply incredible. With all these awe-

some things that are happening though, I have to share

what I love the most! It is Jesus’ Love and the way He

is sharing it abundantly within us.

I was fortunate, or unfortunate, (glass half full or half

empty syndrome ) to go to our District Convention in

early June. The positives far outweighed the negatives.

District President Anderson was amazing in guiding the

convention (with the help of the Holy Spirit) and the

speakers, study leaders and presenters were awesome.

The Theme, “The Great-

est of These is LOVE”, 1

Corinthians 13:13, was

shared throughout all

Bible Study, essays and

presentations. At times

those teaching and shar-

ing were even quite blunt

in their thoughts that

without sharing Jesus’

love and grace that our Church body was at great risk –

FROM THE YOUTH DIRECTOR

by Leslie Helge

A summer kids’ event called Everest VBS will be

hosted at Christ

Lutheran Church

and School from

July 13th – 17th.

At Everest, kids

discover what it

means to hold on

to God’s mighty

power in everyday

life. Kids partici-

pate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing

catchy songs, play teamwork-building games,

make and dig into yummy treats, experience

one-of-a-kind Bible adventures, collect Bible

Memory Buddies to remind them of God’s love,

and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos they’ll take

home and play with all summer long. Each day

concludes with a Summit Celebration that gets

everyone involved in living what they’ve learned.

Family members and friends are encouraged to

join in daily for this special time at 11:30am.

As part of Everest VBS, we will participate in an

Operation Kid-to-KidTM international mission pro-

ject that gives kids the opportunity to send

God’s Word to other kids around the world. This

year, hundreds of thousands of children in

America will raise money to provide colorful, kid-

friendly. Thai-language New Testaments to chil-

dren in the Buddhist country of Thailand.

During Everest VBS, kids will receive special Ele-

phant Banks they can decorate and use to col-

lect donations. For every $4.00 collected, our

partners at Biblica (one of the largest Bible and

Christian literature ministries around the world)

will deliver this special New Testament to a child

in Thailand!

Everest is for kids from 4 years old to students

who completed 5th grade this past school year

and will run from 9:00-noon each day.

If you would like to serve during this week for

one hour, one day or the entire week please

contact me at 884-3876 x 122.

(Continues in the next column)

The month of July brings

to mind pictures of fire-

works and barbecue cel-

ebrating our country’s

independence which oc-

curred back in 1776,

freedom from Great Brit-

ain. The First Amendment provides for Freedom

of Religion, and we are grateful that we can wor-

ship freely in this country.

God, our Father, through His Son, Jesus Christ,

has provided freedom for all people, no matter

the country they live in. And this is eternal free-

dom from sin and death.

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my

disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the

truth will set you free.” John 8:31b-32

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free in-

deed.” John 8:36

We cannot earn this freedom. We cannot fight

for this freedom and gain it for ourselves. This

freedom only comes from belonging to God and

believing His Word, knowing that Jesus’ death

and resurrection won freedom for us! As chil-

dren of God we have been given the Holy Spirit

to work in our lives. We have been called to use

our freedom to serve God and each other in

love. To God be the glory! Rejoice in His peace!

June 2015 - Update

Stepping Forward Together with Christ – A Big Step – Chancel Renovation

With Moses we pray: “And the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.” Psalm 90:17

By God’s Grace: Steps taken in June - Pulpit completed. - East Wall Sealed for Bees. - East Wall repairs completed. - Side walls completed. - Air conditioning installation started. - No major surprises. The small ones come often. By God’s Grace: Next Steps in July

- Wood flooring installed. - Altar completed. - Communion rail installed. - Video projectors installed. - Construction finished.

Almost Done The Chancel Renovation is almost complete. We praise God that the vision we worked so hard on for so many months is becoming a reality. With the pouring of the concrete and the completion of the walls on either side of the cross, the chancel is really taking shape. It looks great. Planning is underway to address how we will “function” in the new space. How will we “ease” into the new look and feel of the renovated chancel? Based on how well we have adapted to our temporary worship setting, I am confident that we will thrive in our new setting. God may even have a few surprises for us. Al Koschmann Al Koschmann

Our Prayer: The Psalm 90 verse quoted above has been included in each newsletter update and on many other Stepping Forward articles and reports. Allow me to provide some context for the verse. At the beginning of the Psalm Moses states that life is short. We are like grass that grows up in the morning and is cut down and withers. This statement could leave the impression that life is meaningless. However Moses quickly adds that we should number our days and apply our hearts unto wisdom. Moses is saying that we should make each day count, doing what God desires. At the end of the Psalm we find verse 17. Moses does not ask that God establish their names, but rather that He establish the work of their hands. Moses identifies that work in verse 16; work that proclaims God’s glory amongst all people and for future generations. It is our prayer that the Chancel Renovation is a work that God establishes; a work that proclaims His glory now and for generations to come. Al Koschmann

A Typical Thursday

To give you an idea of what we do,

let me share with you some of

what occurred on a recent Thurs-

day.

I arrived and had devotion with our

leaders and a few other volun-

teers. This day we were studying

the Lord's Prayer. I took our 4

evangelists to San Mateo and Cen-

tral, a busy bus stop, so they could

share Jesus there. On the way

home I saw a Spanish Speaking

Lady who comes to our ministry,

so quickly asked for a translator to

join me to listen to and pray for

her.

While I'm doing all of this, our cook

and her volunteers are getting

lunch ready. Meanwhile our supply

coordinator and a volunteer are

getting donated rice from Comfort

Foods bagged up to give away.

We have our worship and Bible

Study, one room of English which I

teach and one of Spanish speak-

ers taught by a member of Calvary

Lutheran, while we eat lunch to-

gether.

After our prayers we give away

bread donated by Cosco to Teen

Challenge who gives what is lefto-

ver to us. We give away more food

from Red Lobster and others that

donate to East Central Ministries

who gives what is leftover to us as

well. Each time we give away food,

we share a Bible verse and prayer.

Two men come to us needing laun-

dry soap so we ask them to work a

few minutes watering plants and

picking up trash and give them

each a bottle of soap. We put out

tubs of clothes that have been do-

nated, primarily from Christ Luther-

an Church, and people needing

clothes look through the tubs for

what they need. This day we also

have used pillows from a hotel to

give (thanks to a member of Im-

manuel Lutheran).

Throughout the day we talk to peo-

ple who pass by on the streets or

who come to us and invite them to

our events, share the Bible with

them, and pray for them. The day

is full of God's Word and prayer

and sharing God's love through the

gifts of food and clothes.

How was it received [on this day]?

Two were drunk, one threatened

us, but most listened and were

thankful. We are simply doing

what Jesus has asked us to do:

“Go and make disciples of all

nations.” (Matt. 28:19)

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 8

add our declining membership and our denomination

would continue to plummet.

Lovingly these leaders were sharing the most basic of

Jesus’ messages and almost pleading for many in our

District/Synod to realize that focusing on anything but

God’s Love, Grace and Mercy would significantly affect

our long term presence as the Lutheran Church Missouri

Synod.

As I listened; As I observed a number of pastors and lay

leaders quarrel and argue during the voting sessions; As

I watched many that embraced Jesus’ Gospel and Love

while many others were quarreling over trivial, doctrinal

differences an inner peace engulfed me.

I was comforted knowing how Blessed we are to have a

Pastor that is far more interested in God’s saving Grace

and sharing the Love of Jesus than he is in whether girls

verses boys can acolyte and women can read the Word

of God during services or what songs of Praise to Jesus

can be sung or not sung during District gatherings (yes

these silly things are debated by some – I think in the

Bible they were referred to as Pharasee’s ).

I was also put greatly at Peace that the Love of God and

The Holy Spirit is so present and active in our Congrega-

tion. He is doing incredible things in our midst. I am so

thankful to be able to serve in such a loving group of Be-

lievers.

We are fortunate…not by what we have done…but by

what He has done. I am thankful to call each of you my

Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

God’s Peace,

need them.)

There are three ways to give:

1. Place your donation in the Sunday morning

the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, we always

live in such a way that our lives point others to Jesus.

July 5, 2015 – Mark 6:1-6

“Amazing!”

by Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Ahlersmeyer, Holy Cross Lutheran

Church, Fort Wayne, IN

Stubborn unbelief takes offense and refuses to hear or see

Jesus Christ in the ordinary, less-than-perfect conditions of

life. Listening to the words of eternal life, words and actions

that point to the amazing grace of Jesus, creates amazing

faith in people, amazing because of its dependence upon Je-

sus.

July 12, 2015 – Mark 6:14-29

“Humility, Submission, and Trust”

by Rev. James L. Elsner, Prince of Peace Lutheran

Church~Stroh, IN

Is it hard to be humble? To submit? To trust? Then come

and see faith under fire in John the Baptist.

July 19, 2015 – Mark 6:30-44

“Spiritual Food”

by Rev. Paul E. Shoemaker, Emanuel Lutheran Church~New

Haven, IN

From five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus uses His divine

power to provide food for 5,000 men, not counting the wom-

en and children. Jesus not only has power to nourish our

bodies, but He has the power to nourish our souls.

July 26, 2015 – Mark 6:50

“Jesus Overcomes All Evil”

by Rev. William Brege, Former regular pastor on Worship for

Shut-Ins

Jesus says to you and me, “Do not be afraid. I am with you.”
