“TOUGH LOVE”

Some people have mixed feelings about February be-cause of a certain holiday. You know the one, with all the hearts and the flowers and the romance. Of course you know that I am talking about Valentines Day.

Now, there are people who love Valentines Day, but others feel like it’s impossible to make the day a per-fect, romantic experience. The problem is that our world encourages an almost fairytale-level expectation. But is there something deeper? I think that this holiday can be a reminder as to the true meaning of love.

Let’s face it, for most guys, Valentines Day might seem to be a bit too flowery and soft. Yet, I believe that true love is anything but flowery and soft. True love gives and sacrifices. True love is even willing to lose its' life to save another. True love is tough - it’s tough love.

Far too often, the love that Valentines Day tries to sell is based on what love we might receive in return. So, the expectation is to love as long as the other person loves us. God has something far superior. Our Heavenly Fa-ther sent His Son, Jesus to give His life so that we might love. This is the definition of love.

In John 15:13, Jesus said: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Also

in Romans 5:8, Paul writes: “8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. “ the truth is that we could never earn Gods love and yet in Jesus we have Gods perfect love as a gift. It’s love that brought Jesus to the Cross, where He bled and died to show us Gods love!!!!

This Valentines Day, lets show each Gods kind of love - tough love. This love looks for ways to give, especially when the other person is unable to love in return. This is the ultimate in love - to love because God first loved us. Let's make TOUGH LOVE the only message worth hearing!

President Report Joel McFadden

Last month I shared some information regarding Christ

Memorial’s Constitution and governing principles.

This month I will give you a snapshot of how the

church is managed on a regular basis.

We have meetings as a congregation, infrequently.

There are two Voters meetings each year. There are

special congregational meetings for Calling a Pastor or

major financial decisions. The Winter meeting of

Voters elects the slate of officers and committees put

forth by the Nominating Committee. The Summer

meeting of Voters approves the Budget which is

prepared by the Finance Committee.

The church government is set up with elected and

appointed Officers, Boards and Committees. These

meet to manage the affairs of the church according to

the budget and any other instructions from the Voters.

The Boards and Committees include: Elders, Pre-

School, Youth, Finance, Community Service, Parish

Education, Stewardship, Missions and Trustees. Each

of these groups meet on their own schedule as needed.

A representative of each makes a report at our Church

Council and Voters Meetings.

Church Council meets monthly and is made up of

the leaders of these groups and our officers, President,

Vice President, Treasurer, Financial Secretary and

Congregational Secretary.

As President I chair the meeting, using a standard

agenda along with room for special discussions. Pastor

gives a report and a devotion. Each officer and Board or

Committee Representative makes a report as well.

Topics which require Congregational action are

presented, initiated and reviewed in Council before

sending on to Voters for action.

Our Constitution describes the authority which is vested

in Pastor, Officers, Boards, Committees, Council,

Voters and Congregational Meetings.

A new state-of-the-art wireless network has been installed throughout the entire church facility! Members and guests can access the network through their smartphone, tablet or computer by selecting CLMC_GUEST_NETWORK as your wireless network. You will be able to use the network for three hours before you are required to sign back in. If you need to use the network for a longer period, you can select “CMLC” as your network. You will also need a password. Please contact the church office for the password. Please do not share the password for the network outside of the church family. Password is subject to change. A special thank you to Steve Schumm, Ron Niesen, Jeff Walker, Rob Hall, Randy Quinn and Mark Hassenplug for making this happen.

Stewardship Corner

God’s Love A pastor visited a member of his congregation

who was a farmer. He noticed that the farmer had a

weathervane on top of his new barn with the

inscription, "God is

love." What do you

mean by putting those

words on your weath-

ervane?" he asked. "Do

you mean that God's

love is as changeable as

the wind?"

"Oh, no, just the oppo-

site," the farmer replied.

"I mean that God's love

is the same no matter

which way the wind

blows."

Very likely the farmer had in mind the verse from

Hebrews 13:8 which reads, "Jesus Christ is the same

yesterday and today and forever." This is a good

verse for all of us to remember. Maybe the past year

wasn't such a great one for you. All kinds of things

happen that can make us doubt God's love for us.

Maybe you lost your job. Maybe you failed that

important test you spent hours studying for. Maybe

your best friend betrayed you. Maybe someone you

were close to died. Life can be very confusing and

frightening. Sometimes it's hard to admit to another

person that we're scared or worried, that we don't

"have it all together." God knows, and His love for

you remains constant even though your emotions may

run from very high to very low.

As painful as some of these experiences are, you can

really learn from them. Best of all, they serve to help

you mature in faith. Furthermore, they teach you about

other people. If you have these problems, don't you

think others may too, even if they don't talk about

them? The Apostle Paul knew what it was like to have

problems, and he found a purpose in them: "Praise be

to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the

Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, Who

comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort

those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves

have received from God" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

First, you should praise God for the comfort He gives

you. He is the Father of all compassion! Then, Paul

says, you should comfort others just as God has

comforted you. How can you do this? By listening,

by being patient when friends don't act as they should

as a result of their emotional pain, and, most of all, by

sharing your experience with them and telling them of

the comfort God brings. Doing these things is

practicing good stewardship of the gifts God has given

you.

You don't know what will happen, but you do know

that God will not change, even though everything

around you may. Keep your eyes looking up at God.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank You for Your

presence in my life, even when I forget You. Help me

to learn to trust in You and to cast my cares on You

(1 Peter 5:7). Help me to tell others that they have a

changeless Friend in Jesus. In His name I pray, amen.

Blessings on your Journey as a Steward!

LOVE IS A FIRSTFRUIT OF FAITH.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in My love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in His love.”

(John 15:9)

VALENTINE, REGISTRATION & STAFF

One of my favorite months of our Pre-

school / Kindergarten is February!

Children love Valentine’s Day and they

are so careful and purposeful to make

sure just the right card, picture or piece

of candy gets to the person it was intended for. To

adults, all of those Valentines may look the same, but

to a child, each one is unique! I believe God sees each

of us that way. He loves each one as if there was only

one! It is a great privilege to watch these little children

grow in their love for the Lord each day!

February is the month in which we open registration

for the 2019-2020 school year. Please pray for the

registration process and for all of the families God will

bring to our doors. Registration for all CMLC members

will be held on Thursday, February 7th! You can come

to the school office anytime between the hours of 9:00-

3:00. Any members with children the ages of

Pre-school through Kindergarten should have received

information in the mail. If we missed you, please

accept my apologies and feel free to call me at (610)

296-0650!

I would like to take this

opportunity to introduce

you to some of our very

special staff members! I

will start off with Mrs.

Donna O’Lone. Donna

has been on our staff since

2001. Donna has three

grown daughters, three wonderful sons-in-law and 5

beautiful grandchildren, including the newest additions,

twin boys! Donna and her husband Ed live in

Coatesville. Donna teaches one of our M/W 3’s

classes, a Monday afternoon 3’s Enrichment class and

she serves as our librarian! Donna is blessed to have

one of her grandchildren in her class this year! Donna

has a heart for all people and her caring nature blesses

all of us!

Next is Mrs. Elaine Thompson. Believe it or not, Christ

Memorial Lutheran School has been blessed to have

Mrs. Thompson on staff since 1992! Elaine is the mom

of two grown children, the mom-in-law of two and the

grandmom or “Nona” of a new little granddaughter!

Elaine and her husband Ed live in West Chester. Elaine

has taught many classes in her tenure here, but this year

she is teaching a 3’s Enrichment class and working

with the M/W 3’s children. Elaine is sweet and kind

and truly a peaceful person. She is a great gift to all of

us!

The next staff member I would like to tell you about is

Mrs. Amy Waters. Amy has been on staff since 2007. I

first noticed Amy when she served as a nanny for one

of our school families and couldn’t wait for her to join

us! Amy has twin 8 year old boys at home. Both her

boys came to CMLS from Young 3’s through

Kindergarten! Amy and her husband, Bob, live in

Coatesville and they also have a dog named, “Jazzie”.

Amy is a cheerful, loving person and she is always

smiling! She teaches Pre-K in both the morning and

afternoon. What a joy she is to all of us!

Next is Mrs. Elaine Grauch. Elaine has been on staff

since 1997. Elaine is the mom of four grown children

and the mom-in-law of their four spouses. Elaine and

her husband, Jack, live in West Chester and they are

the grandparents of nine grandchildren from VA to

CA! Elaine also spends her weekends caring for

her mom. Elaine is a sweet and kind person with a

wonderful, positive outlook on life! Elaine has taught

Young 3’s in the past, but now teaches our 3’s classes

four days a week. She is a ray of sunshine to all of us!

The last person I would like to tell you about is Mrs.

Trish Carrozza. Ms. Trish, as she is lovingly referred to

by the children, is the mom of two grown children. She

and her husband, Ralph, live in Broomall. Ms. Trish

has been on staff since 2002. Ms. Trish stopped by

looking for directions one day, and we never let her

leave! Trish is a very talented artist and you have seen

her work many times at our school events. Ms. Trish is

a woman who loves the Lord and enjoys bringing the

Gospel message to the children each day. Trish works

with the Pre-K, both morning and afternoon. We are all

so blessed to share Trish’s gifts and talents and the gift

of her presence here at CMLS.

I hope, during this Valentine month, you will know

how much we at CMLS appreciate and love you, the

congregation of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church.

You are the prayer covering for our children and

families. That is a gift that can only be measured in our

hearts. Thank you!

Luncheon and Hagley Museum Lecture Sunday, Feb. 10th from noon to 2 pm

Open to the Congregation

Located on 235 acres along the banks of the Brandywine in Wilmington, Delaware, Hagley is the site of the gunpowder works founded by E. I. du Pont in 1802. This example of early American industry includes restored mills, a workers' community, and the ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family. Open to the whole congregation.

Come and enjoy lunch and learn about the Hagley Museum. This nearby wonderful museum features indoor and outdoor exhibitions. While sponsored by Women Guild, this is open to all so bring your spouses, family and friends. Admission passes for all in attendance.

Any questions, please contact Linda Knoll or Susan Bell or the church office at email: [email protected] or 610-644-4508. While not required, if you think you are attending, please let the church office so we can make sure we have enough passes.

Elders John Grobe TOTAL INVOLVEMENT

Our Savior commands us in Matthew 28 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This passage of Christ’s Sermon on the Mount known as The Great Commission clearly defines the purpose of our life and church. Please ask yourself how can you and Christ Memorial better perform this critical charge?

ChurchGrowth.org published a study of how people started attending church finding:

86% - A friend invited me 6% - Organized Visitation 6% - Invited by the pastor 2% - Advertising

Those stats shocked me, but think about. In the modern era, we become so jaded by advertising, and many times select avenues to avoid them: DVR, satellite radio, etc. A pastor can only be at one place at any given time, and his duties so often are driven by current ministries and parishioners. We can make a positive impact on those around us while strengthening CMLC.

The Board of Elders has sanctioned a Communications Working Group to reach the local community. The Group will form and execute a multimedia plan to raise CMLC’s awareness in the local area. Please note this is a working group – not a formal committee. Please contact me at [email protected] or 610.462.4545 if you are interested in participating. In Christ,

John Grobe

Warehouse Update: By now you’ve heard we moved

into our West Grove, PA, warehouse. On January 16th,

we officially “opened for business,” meeting every

Wednesday to sort and pack from 10am to 2:30pm,

with a break for devotions and lunch. We hope to see

you at 8 Federal Road soon!

As we settle in, we are realizing just how wonderful

our new location actually is. Not only is our space open

and accessible, it is well lit and has good climate

control. Not only do we have the use of bathrooms,

a kitchen and a conference room, they are modern,

updated, and clean. Not only do we have drive-through

and truck-loading capabilities, we also have good

parking and building security. Most amazing of all, not

only does our landlord wish to work with us, but other

building tenants have come forward to offer their time

and help! Lastly, the local Giant grocery store is eager

and willing to save us apple boxes for packing and

shipping. We are in awe of our good and gracious

Lord! Thank you all for your steadfast prayers.

We are “test-piloting” a new work system for

efficiently processing donations that will include

wheeled sorting carts with spring inserts, barrels on

casters, and fatigue mats. Given the new geographical

location, longer driving distance, and once-a-week

work schedule, we now have some logistical

challenges. One problem is getting donations from

Christ Memorial out to West Grove. Would you or

someone you know be able to transport donated

materials to the warehouse? Please call Rob Hall at

484-459-9217.

Florida Panhandle Update: In November we asked

you to help OGT match a $5,000 grant for Hurricane

Michael victims. By God’s grace you went beyond the

goal, raising $8,200! Thanks to you, over $13,000 was

made available to buy tinned meats, juices, and

spaghetti for the desperately hungry people of the

Panama City community.

New England Branch volunteers Rich Klepps and Jim

Northup drove the rental truck to Florida laden with

food donations from their branch, ours, and Maryland.

When they saw the hurricane’s total destruction, they

stayed over a week, stocking the emergency food

pantry at Trinity Lutheran Church, purchasing

additional pantry supplies, and helping with general

storm clean-up. Rich reported that although 29,000

people had been fed from the pantry by the end of the

year, the need is ongoing. While OGT continues to

assess how best to continue giving aid, please

remember to include the families and volunteers in

your prayers.

To God alone be the glory.

In Memoriam Clarence H. Schatz

September 8, 1925 - December 28, 2018

Clarence H. Schatz, 93, died Friday, December 28,

2018, at Freedom Village.

Clarence was born in Souderton, Pennsylvania on

September 8, 1925, the son of Clarence Landes and

Amelia (Guertler) Schatz. Clarence was preceded in

death by his beloved wife, Mary Sue, whom he shared

nearly 58 years of marriage, a brother Erwin and all of

his generational family. He is survived by three

children; Stephanie Hallock (the late John Osipowicz)

of Coatesville, Cindy Schatz (Kevin Maschhoff) of

Wakefield, Ma., and John Schatz (Linda Young) of

Walnut Creek, Ca.; six grandchildren - Jenifer Laslo of

Exton, Stacey Hallock of Coatesville, Paul Maschhoff

of Boston,Ma., PFC. Rachel Schatz, Jonathan Schatz

of Walnut Creek, Ca., Skylar Schatz of Walnut Creek,

Ca; four great-grandchildren – James Stallard, Colin

Stallard, Alexander Laslo, Maddox Laslo; Sister-in-

law Dorothy Ruggless and niece Kathy Ruggless, both

from Pennsauken, N.J. In addition to his home in West

Chester, Clarence and Mary Sue owned a house in the

Florida Keys, where he would spend some of the

winter with friends.

Due to family moves, Clarence attended public schools

in Souderton, Red Lion, Pa., and Merchantville, N.J.

Later he attended The Williamson Trade School,

where his technical training was interrupted when he

volunteered for the US Air Force, during World War

II.

During his period as an Aviation Cadet, in addition to

college training, he was privileged to serve at various

bases in Indiana, Ohio, and Texas. Later he became a

member of tow-target crews off the coast of Texas,

training foreign fighter pilots in simulated attack

situations. His training continued at the B29 Engineer-

ing School, which he completed just as the war ended.

Shortly thereafter, he returned to complete his training

at Williamson.

Immediately upon graduation

from Williamson he began

employment as a machinist

with Scott Paper Company.

The same year he began his

education at Drexel night

school where after fifteen

years he earned both B.S in

engineering and MBA

degrees. His career with

Scott Paper prospered during

this time and he advanced

through various managerial

positions in maintenance operations to Staff

Engineering. Later he was chosen to manage areas in

Engineering Development in Research before joining

New Product Development as a technical manager.

His forty-plus years with Scott Paper Company

brought much personal satisfaction through the many

relationships developed at all levels of employee

involvement.

Following retirement, Clarence volunteered his time

with Score, RSVP, the Chester County Office of

Aging and Chester County Development. Above all he

was dedicated to the service of His Lord and took an

active role in his church, Christ Memorial Lutheran

Church in Malvern. In addition to serving in many

leadership positions during his 55-plus years in the

congregation, he felt most privileged to lead bible

studies, both at church and as part of the small group

ministry. He knew that teaching was the best way to

learn.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Adult

Bible Study at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, 89

Line Road, Malvern, Pa.

Christ Memorial and Ed Barrow

When Ed and Naomi, with baby Ruth came to this area in 1956, Line Road was just an empty field. Ed was hired to be an associate Professor of Music at West Chester State Teachers’ College (which is now known as West Chester University). He was one of the five

original families in the Malvern and Paoli area that felt there was a need of a Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod here.

The first service was held on May 12, 1957 at the Monday Afternoon Club. On August 18, 1957, Pastor Heilman accepted a call as a missionary-in-large. Out of the Monday Afternoon Club, Christ Memorial Lutheran Church was formed.

When the first election of the church was held after ratifying the constitution, Ed Barrow was one of the first Trustees and Elders. He and his family have been here throughout the years. Two more girls were born to Ed and Naomi, Thea and Janet; Janet being the last child to be baptized in 1961 at the Monday Afternoon Club. The new church building at 89 Line Road was dedicated on April 1, 1962.

While Ed served the church in many capacities, he was best known as the Choir and Handbell Director. In March of 1959, Ed Barrow offered to direct a Junior Choir. In 1962, the Senior Choir (now known as the Adult Choir) was formed. Around 1977, Ed and Naomi, along with Sherry Snelling, went to Ephrata to look at handbells. Two Octaves were purchased and the Handbell Choir was established.

Over the years, the choirs have performed not only at Sunday services but for weddings, funerals, baptisms, installations, and confirmations.

Ed obtained his doctoral degree in music in 1970 and used his expertise in arranging and composing music for both the Adult Choir and the Handbell Choir. One of his earlier Handbell piece was “O Perfect Love” written especially for the wedding ceremony of Sherry Snelling to Tony Gallucci in 1979. Other Handbell pieces included “God, Himself is Present”, “Immortal Invisible” along with many Christmas songs.

For the Adult Choir, the all-time favorite song that Ed composed was “Noah,” which has been preformed many times here at CMLC. Like Noah, Ed was a “righteous man.”

In 2012, Ed retired as CMLC Choir and Handbell Director. For 55 years, Ed was the backbone of the music ministry. He was truly a blessing to this church.

WINTER ADULT BIBLE CLASSES - starting January 6th BOUNDARIES: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life

Drawing on principles from the Bible, the Boundaries DVD video study features

Doctors Henry Cloud and John Townsend, who uncover the secrets to setting

healthy boundaries that provide the framework for rich, productive relationships. As

a participant, you’ll learn how to live your life more fully, display truth, and love more

freely through a journey of discovery and practical application. Leader: Beth Quinn

(Rm 5)

The Lutheran Difference - A Comparison of Christian Denominations

So, you’re a Lutheran – but as you interact with other Christians, you

struggle to explain your beliefs and practices. You have learned

the “what” of the doctrines of the Church, but you may not have a full

scriptural foundation to share the “why.” You struggle to clearly state your

faith – much less understand the differences. Because of this insecurity,

you may avoid opportunities to share what you have learned from Christ

and His Word. If this sounds familiar, this course is for you! The

class is structured around the Nicene Creed, to help you learn, The

Lutheran Difference – how we differ biblical from other Christian

denominations – preparing you to share your faith clearly, and help non-

Lutherans understand our faith. Leader: Mark B. Hassenplug (Rm 7)

The Book of Ephesians (J.D. Greear) Has it ever dawned on you

that nothing has ever dawned on God? He knew before the world

began that His people would face hardship, so He gave us His Word.

The Book of Ephesians is a survival manual - it equips believers to

thrive in a world that hates the message of Jesus Christ. Paul the

Apostle writes to encourage believers to live well - we've been lifted

from the graveyard of sin and called to shout the gospel into the dark-

ened world. In this video-based study the class will discuss in depth the application of Paul’s

letter to our witness today. Leader: Ron Niesen (Rm 8)

LifeLight: Wilderness Wandering This class is an in-depth study of the Old

Testament books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Its topics

include: How Did We Get Here?, Making Offerings, Priestly Ministry, Clean

and Unclean, Atonement, Holiness, Festivals, By the "Numbers",

and Planning to Settle. These final three books of the Torah provide essential

prophesies given to the 'Children of God' to guide them then and us now.
