God’s Summons Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isai-ah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dra-matically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.” We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving pow-er of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an un-attractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dan-gerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing our-selves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self‑giving is often accompanied by a col-lection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Cuando era niño a mis primos mexicanos les gustaba contarme cuentos de la Llorona, la mano negra, bul-tos que flotaban en los cementerios, y lucecitas azu-les que aparecían sobre tesoro escondido por bandi-dos de siglos pasados. Estos cuentos también se es-cuchaban en el Valle del Río Grande de Texas, don-de me crié. Confieso que me fascinaban y asustaban esas misteriosas leyendas, así como los relatos de santas y santos que levitan, tienen visiones, escuchan voces celestiales o chorrean sangre de llagas que re-cuerdan las llagas de Cristo en la cruz. He escuchado el llanto de la Llorona, y me parece haber visto la mano negra. Sé que mi carro se movió solo en un lugar donde murieron unos niños sobre un autobús escolar. Los latinos sabemos que hay mu-chas cosas que no se pueden explicar, simplemente se vive con el misterio. Y ¿a quien no le atrae un buen misterio? El sentido del misterio nos atrae y nos intimida en el misticismo de los santos cristianos. Từ nay anh sẽ bắt người Chẳng ai ngờ cuộc đời Simon có thể chuyển hướng. Ông đã có nghề nghiệp ổn định và đã lập gia đình. Thế giới của ông là hồ Ghênêxarét, là những con cá quẫy đuôi trong lưới, là gia đình cần phải chăm nom. Ông yêu vợ con, ông yêu biển cả. Chúa đã đặt ông vui sống trong thế giới ấy, nên chỉ có Ngài mới có thể kéo ông ra, và bất ngờ đưa ông vào một thế giới mới, một đại dương bao la hơn nhiều, một gia đình rộng lớn hơn vạn bội. Chỉ Chúa mới có thể làm trái tim ông say mê một Ai khác, yêu một Ai đó hơn những người ông đã từng yêu. Đức Giêsu đã đến với Simon thật tự nhiên. Ngài chọn thu-yền của ông làm nơi giảng dạy. Sau đó Ngài mời ông thả lưới bắt cá, Simon có nhiều lý do để khước từ. Ông có thể nhân danh kinh nghiệm của mình để thấy tốt hơn nên chờ dịp khác, hay nại lý do mệt mỏi, sau một đêm ra khơi. Nhưng Simon đã vâng lời, chỉ vì tin Lời Thầy Giêsu, Lời đầy quyền uy, Lời trừ được quỷ (Lc 4,30). Lời mạnh mẽ đã chữa cho mẹ ông khỏi bệnh (4,39). Mẻ cá lạ lùng, mẻ cá chỉ có trong mơ. Mẻ cá làm Simon run rẩy nhận ra mình tội lỗi, và nhận ra Đấng ở gần bên. Mẻ cá bất ngờ mở đường cho một lời mời gọi mới: "Đừng sợ, từ nay anh sẽ thành kẻ bắt người." Simon lại có nhiều lý do hơn để từ chối. Chuyện gia đình bề bộn, tương lai bấp bênh. Kẻ quen bắt cá đâu có khả năng bắt người. Kẻ tội lỗi đâu xứng với sứ mạng. Nhưng một lần nữa, Simon dám tin vào Lời Chúa, để cho Chúa tự do lôi kéo mình. Ông đã bỏ lại bao điều ông yêu mến. Khi bỏ lại hai thuyền đầy cá, ông tin rằng những mẻ cá mới đang đợi ông. Chúa Gọi

Đối mặt với sức mạnh và uy nghi của Thiên Chúa, phản ứng đầu tiên của tiên tri Isa-ia là nhận biết tội lỗi của mình. Vô phúc cho tôi, tôi chết mất! Vì lưỡi tôi nhơ bẩn, ông nói to. Tương tự như vậy, với mẽ lưới cá trống rỗng của mình được lấp đầy một cách đáng kinh ngạc theo chỉ dẫn của Jesus, Perô đã quỳ xuống và kêu lên, “Lạy Chúa, xin Chúa hãy tránh xa con, vì con là người tội lỗi”.
