From the Pastor’s Desk I don’t need to tell you that the weather was particularly brutal this past week. Driving down Dover Road on Tuesday night, I felt like I was on an episode of “Ice Road Truckers.” Over dinner on Thursday, one of my housemates told me that he was anxious for things to warm up. Proverbially speaking, he was in the same boat as Noah – ready for a change in the weather. It was probably day twenty-two of the great flood when Noah’s family began to question: “Will this rain ever come to an end?” It was an unprecedented trial they had to endure, but after things dried up, God made a covenant and a promise: from that day forward his people would be protected from the destructive waters. Having seen his incredible power, the people trusted that divine oath. Similarly, we put our trust in God who through the Scriptures reassures us that life will not get the best of us – no matter if we have to suffer through Arctic weather, forty-day floods, or any other sort of disaster. For us, supernatural trials are met with supernatural faith. There is a capacity within us to persevere, because we believe in our heart of hearts that God will make good on his promises. Though they threaten almost constantly, the waters (read: sickness, hurt, misfortune, mistakes, betrayal) will not overwhelm us. Like Noah’s family, we belong to God, and he will keep us safe.

Operation Rice Bowls are still available. The Rice Bowl is an engaging way of supporting Catholic Relief Services in their international efforts to tend to the poor. Please fill a Rice Bowl this Lent for those who go without. Feel free to join us for Fr. Robert Barron’s DVD presentation “Priest, Prophet, King.” We are meeting every Thursday in Lent. The Knights of Columbus are hosting a delicious pancake breakfast next Sunday, March 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Stop by All Saints Academy cafeteria after Mass. The cost is $8.00. Soup Suppers will take place on the following Wednesdays: March 4, March 11, and March 18. The dinners run from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 7:30 p.m. in the church basement. Members of the Family Life Committee provide soups, but also invite you to bring a soup to share. But don't let that request deter you from coming! No one leaves hungry! This year we will be using a movie format for our Lenten program. The first movie will be The Gift of Hope, which is the story of Tony Melendez, singer and performer in Branson, Missouri. Please join us! (This event is bilingual.) The Appalachian Project Stock Sale will take place after all Masses the weekend of March 7/8. Consider investing in our youth and the service they provide to disadvantaged families in Appalachia. Contributions may also be made by mail or by placing an envelope marked “Appalachian Project” in the collection. Please include your name and address so we can send you a postcard from Scioto County! Every Friday during Lent: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Confessions, and Stations of the Cross. We will have Adoration on the back altar from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Confessions are from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Stations of the Cross in English begin at 7:00 p.m., Stations of the Cross in Spanish begin at 8:00 p.m.
Desde el Escritorio del Párroco
No es necesario decirles que el clima de la semana pasada estuvo particularemnte brutal. Manejando sobre Dover Road el martes en la noche, me sentí como si estuviera en un episodio de “Camioneros del Hielo”. En la cena del jueves, uno de mis compañeros me dijo que estaba ansioso por que las cosas se calentaran un poco. Hablando proverbialmente, él estaba en la misma arca que Noé – listo para un cambio de clima. Probablemente fue hacia el día 22 del diluvio cuando la familia de Noé se comenzó a cuestionar: “¿Algún día terminará esta lluvia?” Fue una prueba sin precedentes que tuvieron que soportar, pero después de que todo se secó, Dios hizo un pacto y una promesa: desde ese día, su pueblo estaría protegido de la destrucción de las aguas. Habiendo visto su poder increíble, el pueblo confió en aquel juramento divino. De igual manera, nosotros ponemos nuestra confianza en Dios, quien, a través de las escrituras, reafirma que la vida no tomará lo mejor de nosotros – no importa si tenemos que sufrir el clima polar, cuarenta días de inundaciones, o cualquier otro desastre. Nosotros enfrentamos las pruebas sobrenaturales con fe sobrenatural. Tenemos la capacidad de perseverar, porque creemos en nuestro corazón que Dios cumplirá sus promesas. Aunque nos amenazan casi constantemente, las aguas (léase: enfermedad, dolor, desgracia, errores, traición) no nos abrumarán. Al igual que la familia de Noé, pertenecemos a Dios, y é nos mantendrá a salvo. Que el Señor los bendiga durante la próxima semana. All Saints Academy Catholic School All Saints Academy Catholic School is in the process of registering students for next year.
