The Future of Development and Peace – Caritas Canada Joe Gunn, Executive Director of Citizens for Public Justice and recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, will be speaking on the past, present and future of Development and Peace – Caritas Canada. For over ten years, Mr. Gunn worked with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, where he developed policy and coordinated work in areas of social justice, missions, and Aboriginal peoples. He also coordinated the Make Poverty History campaign, and engaged in research, public speaking and advocacy on national and international issues. 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Development and Peace, making this an opportune time to explore both the history and evolution of this important Canadian-Catholic organization. Since its in-ception by the Canadian Bishops in 1967, Development and Peace has continued to work with hundreds of partners in the global south, and educate Canadians to better understand the root cause of poverty and injustice. Mr Gunn will be speaking at St Charles Garnier in Kelowna on Saturday, May 13, at 9:30. All are invited, and both lunch and a membership to D&P will be provided at no charge, to attendees. Development and Peace is working to support its partners in the region, including the local Caritas network, to address this humanitarian crisis. Book Review by Julie Forster Swear to God: The Promise and Power of the Sacraments By Scott Hahn Scott Hahn describes the sacraments in light of the power of oaths and covenants through stories from his own life, references to the Bible, and also the tradition of the Church. This book is easy to read, yet the things it talks about are deep. One thing that stands out to me is his discussion of the need for oaths for people with jobs that give them authority over other people's lives, for example judges, and police officers. I had never really thought about how important those words "so help me God" are when you carry the responsibility of other people's' futures each day. An excellent book which I could get new insights from reading again and again! This book and others can be borrowed from our parish office.
