A letter from Bishop Berg—December 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am pleased to send you this message as we prepare to celebrate my third Christmas season as your Bishop. May your Christmas season bring you joy in our Lord! There is some news I wish to share. This coming year we will celebrate our 75th anniversary as a Diocese. Several months ago we began a process in Pueblo to see how we, as a Diocese, will clarify priorities and align our vision for the future. The Spitzer Center for Ethical Leadership, a Catholic consulting group which assists many dioceses, is guiding us in this project. In November the Presbyteral Council and Council of Deans met to produce a mission statement which ad-dresses the values, vision and goals for the Diocese for the future. This is the continuation of the process of listening sessions held in the Deaneries before I arrived as Bishop. As your Bishop, I am very excited about the opportuni-ties ahead. We can achieve new priorities and direc-tion, we can do things in this Diocese, energized around a common purpose. I am relying on the vision and input of many of those who have been here for many years that can incorporate the richness of our past to achieve the objectives for the future. From our efforts we are already seeing exciting possi-bilities. We are engaged in the creation of a strategic plan that will move the diocese forward in ways we haven’t seen before. We are looking at ways to more creatively use our financial structure to achieve our di-ocesan objectives and goals. We are initiating activi-ties to deepen the spirituality and brotherhood of our priests. We are seeking to find new ways to engage families and youth in the rich tradition of our Catholic faith and heritage. We will be more intentionally root-ed in prayer with opportunities to fulfill the spiritual desires of our people. The Diocese of Pueblo was announced 75 years ago by Pope Pius XII, and Bishop Joseph Willging was in-stalled as first Bishop in the newly-constituted Cathe-dral of the Sacred Heart on March 12, 1942. Under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Therese we are moving forward in a unified vision. My prayers are with you for the celebration of a holy and joyous Christmas season. Please join me in prayers and sup-port for our diocese as we plan our future in this, our 75th Blessed New Year!

January 2, 2017 Dear CTK family,

I’m celebrating three New Year’s Days this year. The First Sunday of Advent was the first, the start of our Church Liturgical Year. I’m writing this the day after New Year’s Day, the start of our civil year. And my third New Year’s Day begins when I walk up the steps to the altar in Christ the King Parish Church. I’m praying, and I hope you are, too, that I will be a good Pastor for you. My primary task is to help lead you to Heaven, not by myself, but with the support of our brothers and sisters who belong to our parish family. That was St. Paul’s idea of the Church: it is our other family. And let’s have fun on the way! Yes, each one of us has a cross to carry, but we can carry it with an attitude of ongoing joy, because Christ promises us eternal life. Look at the people around you in church. I dare say most of us are going to be together in Heaven for eternity (even those who “push our buttons”), so it behooves us to start acting like family now. We will occasionally disagree and argue, but we’ll be able to forgive and reconcile because we are united in Christ’s merciful love. May you and I always keep the greater good of our parish family foremost in mind, and be willing to surrender our own personal agendas in favor of it. I will frequently be soliciting your advice. I encour-age your participation in the life of this parish fami-ly: in its ministries, councils and committees. It’s the clearest way of showing we are thankful for God’s generous blessings in our lives. May we all be good stewards of God’s gifts by sharing them with our parish family and others in need. I thank God and Bishop Berg for this assignment. I am excited about our future and am truly looking forward to my time with you, as we grow together in God’s love. God bless all of us in our first New Year together! – Fr. John O.
