FIRST CORINTHIANS BIBLE STUDY Join CTR's Sunday evening Bible Study this Fall, as we learn about the conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth and relate them to many similar Christian struggles today. We utilize the Great Adventure series of DVDs and workbooks from Ascension Press in our studies. Each weekly video presentation interweaves Church history and Holy Scripture, and a group discussion of the workbook questions follows. All materials are provided by the facilitator, but you must register by September 16th to receive your copies at the first class. It's recommended to bring a Catholic Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church to each session. This series will include an introductory session without homework at the September 29th meeting, followed by 10 more weekly sessions through December 15, 2019. The class runs each Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 PM, and we will not meet Thanksgiving weekend. If you anticipate any conflicts, the facilitator can make online video makeups available for that component of the class. Contact Mary Brett at [email protected] for more information and to register.

A Word from the Pastor… In the 2nd reading today from the Letter to the Hebrews, St. Paul exhorts us, “Do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by Him; for whom the Lord loves, He disciplines.” Have you ever noticed how similar are the words Discipline and Disciple? Discipline means to train or teach someone to obey the rules. Disciple means follower or student of a teacher. Both words come from the Latin “discipulus” (student) or “disciplina” (instruction or knowledge). St. Paul is reminding us that if we are going to be Christ’s followers (disciples), then we must permit Him to instruct us. We do not choose a religion based upon what we want, because then it can never help us to be more than we are… instead in humility we permit our Faith to discipline us, to instruct us, so that we can be formed by it. Then eventually we will become more than we ever imagined. Do not lose heart when being disciplined, corrected or experiencing suffering. For this discipline is a means of formation, helping us to be better disciples of Christ and is a sign that He loves enough to invite us to be even more than we are right now. Discipline leads to Discipleship. To be a disciple means that we are willing to follow another, to be led and formed, instructed in what is true and what is not true. This instruction takes humility, a desire to see things through the eyes of another and the patience to wait to be well taught and instructed. Christ and His Church will lead us to a greater understanding of our Faith and help us to be more faithful disciples, if only we have the humility to be formed and instructed.
