Tidings Summer Edition
June/July/August 2019
Volume 66, Issue 5
Dear Friends,
We have made progress in “paving the way” for your next
period of ministry, but there still is work to be done in order
to be well prepared for your next settled pastor. Here are a
few notes, reminders, and ideas for moving forward:
I. Boundaries. We still seem to be having problems with
boundary violations. Two events last month confirmed that
addressing this is an urgent matter. Your future vitality will be
impaired if these problems are not addressed, and this
interim period is the perfect time to do that.
I suggest that everyone re-read my past Tidings article
related to boundaries. Ask Karen for that article if you have
already recycled the last issue of Tidings. Reflect upon the
examples given, talk to each other about them, and ask me if you are not sure you understand. Another
thing you might want to request from the office is a list of examples of boundary violations that I recently
gave to the Consistory.
II. Conflicts. I have been surprised to learn, quite recently, that there is even more latent conflict,
bubbling under the surface, than I had originally thought. Respecting boundaries will go a long way
toward preventing future annoyances or resentments. To resolve existing problems, the Pastoral
Relations Committee will soon be trained in mediating disagreements. That committee will also soon
produce a chart that describes a conflict resolution process.
III. By-Laws. You recently completed a by-laws overhaul, and you did a great job. You have good by-
laws, but now that you have lived into them for a few years, some tweaking is in order. This is absolutely
the kind of thing that you should do before your next pastor arrives. Ask Karen for a list of proposed by-
laws changes that will make your systems run better and will discourage future conflicts. I suggest that
you discuss these now, so that you are ready to vote on them at the next annual meeting.
IV. A Second Interim. There is a possibility that my time with you might end before your next settled
pastor arrives. If that happens, then I urge you to call another interim minister. A period without a full-
time, trained pastor would be very damaging to Christ’s Reformed Church. The other UCC ministers in
Hagerstown agree with me. So does the Catoctin Association Committee
on Ministry. So does the Associate Conferences Minister.
I urge you to begin thinking about all these things. In the meantime, I will
continue the “paving the way” work that I have been doing since I arrived.
Toward that end, I have written five questions for reflection that appear
later in this issue of Tidings. There are no right-or-wrong answers; I invite
you to read them, pray over them, and talk about them with each other.
In the love of Christ,
Derrick

There are no right-or-wrong answers. Talk about these questions with each other.
1. Congregational Leadership. To what extent do we wish for the congregation
to be led by the faithful servants who have kept things going for this long and who
understand how things work, versus to what extent do we wish to open-up the
leadership of the congregation to newer folks who may not know how things are
done? If a group of leaders is dedicated, works hard for the congregation, and is
experienced, shouldn’t it remain in office and hold most of the authority?
2. Transparency versus Discretion in Communication. What sorts of
conversations and decisions should be shared with the entire congregation, verses
what should be discussed only by the consistory? And what should be shared with
the entire consistory, verses what should be discussed only among two or three
top leaders? Do we want broad participation in decision-making, or do we need to
be more discrete, so that we can make sure information is not shared too broadly?
3. Pastoral Leadership. What kind of relationship does the congregation want
with its pastor? What does it mean to be in covenant with him or her? To what
extent should the congregation trust the pastor and allow him or her to lead,
versus to what extent should the lay leadership monitor the work of the pastor and
provide regular oversight and correction? What should be the role of the Parish
Relations Committee?
4. Conflicts and Dissatisfaction. How should the lay leadership respond if one
or two people or families threaten to leave the church and take their money with
them, unless a certain policy is enacted or decision made? Since the congregation
does not want to lose a single member, how should the leadership respond?
5. Cumbersome Processes versus Efficiency. Should the congregation always
pay attention to lines of authority, follow the by-laws and processes of the
congregation, and respect everyone’s right to participate in decision-making, or
are there times in which it is more efficient to simply get things done, without
worrying about honoring boundaries or following cumbersome procedures?

May This Be True of CRC
“The church I serve is a large congregation.
Ten years ago I challenged our members:
What if, when people think of our church, they
don’t first think of the size of our membership
but instead of the size of our heart and the way
that we serve the community? What if we were
known not for our average weekly worship
attendance but instead for the hours our
members volunteer to address the needs of
the city? And what if we were known not for
how well we love each other but instead for
how willing we are to welcome and love those
outside the walls of our church?”

scripture/devotional study at the same time.
Our time together is lay-led. The next one will
be June 12th at 6 pm in the Strunk Library.
