The Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar School

337 students from the Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar School achieved at least 8 or more A*/A grades in their GCSE examinations. Included are Eoin Monaghan, Sam O’Neill, James McKevitt, Sean McAteer, Callum Murchan, David Price, Ardghal MacMahon, Ruairi Campbell, Joseph Kirk, Cathair McKinney, Aaron Miller, Ryan O’Connor, Niall Rafferty, Zain Shahid, David Castelli, Daniel Lundy, Rafael Ali, Aaron Byrne, John Catterson, Caolan Dillon, Steven Fegan, Mark Maginn, Andrew McAteer, Callum McGeeney, Raymond Murphy, Shea Quinn, Joseph Rock, Gareth Deane, Luke Byrne, Oisin Goodman, Troy Keenan, Caolan Magee, Brian O’Connor, ConorO’Farrell, Ross O’Hanlon, Rory O’Hare and James Vint.

5Mr Dermot McGovern, Headmaster Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar School, Newry congratulates the ‘Top Achievers’. These eight pupils achieved at least 11 or more A*/A grades in their GCSE examinations.

5Nine pupils from the Abbey Grammar School obtained 10 A*/A grades, including Ruairi Campbell, Joseph Kirk, Cathair McKinney, Aaron Miller, Ryan O’Connor, Mark Maginn, Zain Shahid, David Castelli and Daniel Lundy.

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire Abbey communityI would like to welcome you all to this evening’s Prize Giving Ceremony.Tonight is an important occasion when we honour the achievementsof our students over the last academic year

I would like to begin with a special word of congratulations to thestudents we honour tonight by awarding GCSE certificates and alsostudents in the categories of Best in Subject at GCSE and Top GCSEGrades. I also applaud the students whose other achievements haveenriched the previous academic year.

I have great pleasure in welcoming back to his Alma Mater ourdistinguished guest speaker, Mr Jim Finnegan. Jim was a pupil in theAbbey between 1987 and 1994. He has since gone on to lead a hugelysuccessful and interesting career in the field of mobile communications.His business is well established and has brought significant employmentto the local area. We are honoured that he has accepted our invitationto return to the Abbey tonight.

At the same time as congratulating our pupils, I would like to payparticular tribute to you the parents for the work that you have doneover the years and in particular for the enthusiastic and continuedsupport that you offer the school.

Lastly, on behalf of myself and the Board of Governors I would like toexpress our appreciation for the work of our dedicated staff who workso enthusiastically with your sons in enhancing all aspects of theireducation.

In conclusion, I hope that you all enjoy the presentations tonight and Iinvite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen at theend of the evening.

I am a former pupil of both the Abbey Christian Brothers’ Primary Schooland the Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar School. After finishing mystudies in 1994, I went to the University of Greenwich in London where Istudied for a BSC ( Hons ) Environmental Science degree. 

I held several brief jobs in London after finishing University and it was thenthat I realised that I really wanted was to run my own business. I foundedJMC Mobile in 1999 and the company became registered as limited in 2004.JMC Mobile has grown from having two employees in 1999, to having 48staff, specialising in mobile communications and IT solutions with officesin Newry, Belfast and Leeds. 

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking throughout the island of Ireland particularlythe Mournes. I have a love of the Irish language and have been attendingclasses over the last two years. I like to keep active and play 5-a-side twicea week with friends and work colleagues.

I am a firm believer that one must keep fit both mentally and physically inorder to maintain success.
