of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of

the full stature of Christ”.- Ephesians 4:11-13

Much prayer and spiritual discernment led to discovering God’s theme and

direction for the October 17-18, 2008 Regional Assembly. This update is to let you know

the change that has been made to the Regional Assembly closing service. Rev. Dr.

Jeremiah Wright, Jr. will not be participating and Rev. Dr. William Edwards, Regional

Pastor and President, will address the assembly in the closing worship service.

The Regional Assembly Planning Team has been working for over a year to put

together an assembly that celebrates the transformative work that is happening in the

mission and ministry of our congregations and to equip leaders “for the work of

ministry, building up the body of Christ.”

The theme of the assembly, “Body Building: Strengthening Your Congregation for

Mission” was developed in June 2007. Following insights of the Holy Spirit through

prayer and Bible study together, the planning team outlined the structure, worship,

workshops and invited speakers. At that time a variety of potential speakers were

considered and Dr. Wright, given his considerable career in raising Trinity UCC to the

highest level of mission support, was invited along with Rev. Cynthia Adcock and Rev.

Jeffery Wheeler, co-pastors at Northwest Christian Church; Rev. Julia Brown-Karimu,

Vice President, Division of Overseas Ministries; and Rev. Dr. Glenn Thomas Carson,

President, Disciples of Christ Historical Society.

Recently we have heard from many of our members, both at the individual and

congregational level, criticizing and praising the participation of Dr. Wright. This led the

committee to a period of prayerful discernment to make the decision for Dr. Edwards to

be our closing speaker to bring a message of healing, reconciliation and unity related to

our assembly theme.

The Regional Assembly Planning Team appreciates the passion and response

that was received, as it confirms the vitality of the Regional Church. We were left with

the impression that we have work to do in bridging the competing views we heard.

Ultimately, we as a committee see this as precisely what the Regional Assembly hopes

to achieve. Romans 8:28 affirms that “all things work together for good for those who

love the Lord, who are called according to God’s purpose.

We encourage all who have shared their views, as well as those who did not, to

attend and participate in the October 17-18, 2008 Regional Assembly.

Ohio Disciples Outreach wants to invite your congregation to come and share the great things it is doing in mission and ministry with members of Disciple of Christ congregations throughout Ohio at our Regional Assembly. This is a wonderful opportunity to excite people about what you are doing and get them involved in mission beyond the local congregation.

Our Assembly will be held October 17-18, 2008 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Dublin, Ohio near Columbus. All activities will be held at the hotel so there will be plenty of opportunities to share your ministry. (Please see our Regional website, www.ccinoh.org for Assembly registration information. )

We encourage you to be creative in your display space. The hotel has been gracious in offering us the use of wireless internet capabilities throughout our display areas. I encourage you to take advantage of this if you can.
