O KIR
STENA pioneering fi gure in fi lm studies, Christian
Metz proposed countless new concepts for
refl ecting on cinema from the 1960s to the
1980s. Rooted in a phenomenological struc-
turalism, he worked out a fi lm semiology
which he then confronted with psycho-
analysis and later with enunciation theory.
He also played a key role in establishing fi lm
studies as a scholarly discipline, making
major contributions to its institutionaliza-
tion in universities worldwide. This book
brings together a stellar roster of contribu-
tors to present a close analysis of Metz’s
writings, their theoretical and epistemologi-
cal positions, and their ongoing infl uence
today.
