Christian Reporter Mt. Lebanon Christian November 2018
PLANNING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER!
This is an exciting time. I am hoping that all of you will participate in the church survey that will help us as we look to the future. We are inviting you to complete the Church Assessment Tool (CAT), an on-line instrument that will help leaders gauge the strength, vitality, and trends in our church. The information gained from this assessment will be valuable in helping the leaders of Mt. Lebanon Christian Church as we make decisions about the future of our church. In a few days, you will receive an email with a unique link to the CAT. Beginning Monday, November 12 we are asking you to go online by clicking on the link provided and tell us about your experiences in and priorities for our church. The survey will close on Monday, December 3. On Sunday, November 18, following worship, members from the Vision Team will be available with computers to help you fill out the survey if you would like some assistance. The survey takes about 20 minutes to answer. Please do not discuss the survey or your answers with others as this may influence their answers. If you need a paper copy, copies will be available in the narthex as well as in the church office. A box will be provided in the narthex for completed paper surveys. All answers are strictly anonymous. We have no way of matching any assessment to a particular person, so please feel free to candidly share your perceptions, opinions and experiences. Our future together is dependent on your participation and honest answers. If you have questions, please contact Cindy McClung or John McCarty Many thanks from the Vision Team Cindy McClung, John & Jane McCarty, Bill Green, Jim Bowers, Karen Newman, Amy Angotti, Ann Totin, and Irene Corwin

Thanksgiving Day
During the American Revolution a
yearly day of national thanksgiving was
suggested by the Continental Congress.
In 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day as an
annual custom, and by the middle of the 19th century
many other states had done the same.
In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a day of
thanksgiving as the last Thursday in November, which he
may have correlated it with the November 21, 1621,
anchoring of the Mayflower at Cape Cod. Since then, each
president has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the date for
Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November in 1939
(approved by Congress in 1941.)

THE BOOK OF PSALMS As we all know, the book of Psalms is considered the “hymnal of the Bible”. Have you ever considered who the authors of this great book are? In contrast to popular thinking, David did not write all the psalms in the book of Psalms. In fact, Psalms includes more authors than any other book in the Bible. The following authors and the psalms attributed to them are as follows. DAVID (75 total psalms; 73 noted in Psalms; Ps. 2 is attributed to David in Acts 4:25; and Psalm 95 in Hebrews 4:7); also 3-9; 11-41; 51-65; 68-70; 86; 101; 103; 108-110; 122; 124; 131; 133; 138-145. ASAPH (and family) (12 Psalms); 50; 73-83. THE SONS OF KORAH (11 Psalms) 42; 44-49; 84-85; 87-88. HERMAN (1 Psalm, with the sons of Korah) : 88 SOLOMAN (2 psalms): 72 and 127. MOSES (1 Psalm): 90 ETHAN the Ezahite ( 1 Psalm) 89. ANONYMOUS (The 48 remaining psalms) Scholars also note that the psalms attributed to David may have originated or been associated with David but may have also included assistance from others. In total, at least eight authors are named, and other anonymous writers certainly would add to this total. Interestingly, The Psalms were written over nearly a 1,000-year period ranging from the lifetime of Moses in the wilderness (1440-1400 BC) to Ezra (fourth century BC). Most psalms were composed during the lifetime of David and Solomon. The ancient nature of the psalm titles has often been questioned. Some have argued that the titles were added much later and should not be considered authentic. However, with the discovery of the DEAD SEA SCROLLS in the 12th century, copies of the Psalms have been found with the traditional author names included. The evidence points to the authentic nature of the traditional authorship of the Psalms. Today, Jews and Christians enjoy the Psalms, and many modern songs are based on them. The enduring work of these songwriters continues to change lives and encourage us to worship God.

Elder’s Corner
Why me Lord! How many times I have asked myself this question. 1 know that I am not the only one. In the bible many of the God's prophets asked this question, they are not worthy, they are not brave. In November we celebrate the Saints. Those who have went before us. Did anyone ever say to you? You are a saint. Saints were not perfect. Many were selfish and rich, some were cheaters and thieves. Some even hated Jesus. Remember Saul, he sure was a stinker at first until the Lord enlightened him. We are all saints, our parents, children and friends. God has called us all, not to be perfect but to love one another. If someone calls you a saint accept it quietly. They see God in you. The feast of All Saints dates back many centuries. In ancient Rome, it was celebrated as the feast of the "nameless martyrs." Over the course of time, it has become one of the most popular of the holy days, prob- ably because people see it as a celebration of the unpublicized holiness of people they've known, grandparents, parents, friends - who were good and holy people. The salt of the earth. Most people who exercise good stewardship with their skills and money don't ever get their name on plaques. But God doesn't miss it. Nor do those who are close to these salt-of-the-earth people. That's why the Church celebrates this feast of All Saints. Lord I am angry and confused; my pain and sickness is beginning to overwhelm me. I want to give so much more in life. So many things I have left undone or unsaid. Give me strength to accept my present illness, pain or problems. Forgive my impatience and my unbelief in you. Amen.
The men's church breakfast will be on November 3rd at 8:30 am at the Gab n’ Eats in Carnegie. No cash or credit cards.

Active Shooter Training In times like these it is important for us to be prepared for all kinds of situations. Sadly, shootings happen even in churches and synagogues. On Thursday, November 29 at 7
pm, the Mt. Lebanon police Department will be here at church to give us training on what to do in case of such an event. It is a power point presentation that will last 1 – 1 ½ hours. Allll are encouraged and welcome to participate. The more of us who know what to do, the better prepared we will be in case of an emergency.
