The United States Bishop’s Document explaining Christian Stewardship states, “Mature disciples make a conscious, firm, decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ no matter the cost to themselves” (Stewardship; A Disciple’s Response). A disciple is both learner and companion of Jesus, as well as one open to the movement of the Holy Spirit towards a gracious generosity of heart. The authentic disciple regards all he or she is and possesses as gifts and blessings with others for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Wikipedia defines stewardship as “an ethic that embodies the responsible planning and management of resources. The concepts of stewardship can be applied to environment, economics, health, property, information, theology, etc.” The biblical doctrine of stewardship defines a person’s relationship to God. It identifies God as owner and each individual as manager. God makes us His co-worker in administering all aspects of life. St. Paul states, “For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (I Corinthians 3:9). In essence, stewardship defines our purpose in this world as assigned to us by God Himself. It is our divinely given opportunity to join with God in His worldwide and eternal redemptive movement (cf Matthew 28:19-20). Stewardship is not God taking something from us; it is His method of bestowing His richest gifts upon all His people. “No one shall appear before the Lord empty-handed, but each of you with as much as he can give, in proportion to the blessings which the Lord, God has bestowed on you” (Deuteronomy 16:10,16-17). “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with first fruits of all your produce; then will your barns be filled with grain, with new wine your vats will overflow” (Proverbs 3:9). “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (I Peter 4:8-10). As disciples, we understand God to be the giver of all good gifts—all we have, all of our abilities, all of our possessions; everything.
