ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Ms Debra McNaughton

We farewell some of our VCAL students today as they have completed their units of work. They will return for the Graduation Mass and other celebrations later in Term 4. Many have already secured apprenticeships or are in the process of undertaking interviews for future work prospects. Our Year 12 VCE students still have a little way to go with the trial examinations in the second week of the holidays, then two final weeks of classes before the VCAA examinations begin in earnest. THE DOOR OF MERCY (Extract)

The Door of Mercy is double-hinged, swinging in, opening out, sturdy, yet easily moved.

My friend says: You only have to knock once, and you only have to knock lightly.

The Door of Mercy rests on the threshold of need.

Its single key is kindness, which is always in the lock. Faithfulness is its lintel,

hope and healing the strong jambs either side. The Door of Mercy might be splendidly red,

it could be an unobtrusive brown………

…….. My friend says: You only have to knock once, and you only have to knock lightly.

The God of Mercy, whose door it is, is always home.

MERCY DAY

2017 Mercy Day is celebrated by many Mercy schools across Australia. It is fitting to celebrate the day at the end of another very busy term. Whilst it is a day to kick back and have some fun, it is also a time to reflect on our foundresses, Catherine McAuley and Ursula Frayne. These two amazing women had the vision, faith and talent to put into place what we enjoy today. That being a vibrant school whereby we all have the opportunity to learn, grow and develop into Mercy people of the world. Our focus today is the very important works of the Mercy Sisters here in Australia and in Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste. The organisation is Mercy Works. Today we try to gain some understanding of the work that Mercy Works undertakes in health, education, sustainability and justice for those who have no voice. And so the fund raising that occurs today goes to Mercy Works. Today is a reminder of the many blessings that each of us enjoy and to think of our near neighbours, just off the coast of Australia who have much less. Another highlight of the day was in meeting Sr Elizabeth Young rsm. Sr Elizabeth has only recently made her final vows to the Sisters of Mercy. We were delighted that she was able to join us today and speak at our Assembly. She inspired us with her story and the work she undertakes in the Mercy world. We wish Sr Elizabeth all the best as she carries out her mission of Mercy. I hope that all our Sacred Heart staff, students and families get to take a break, have a rest and hopefully recover from any sickness that has been hanging around this winter. God bless and stay safe over the holiday break.

Year 8 Reflection Day The Year 8 Reflection Day began with celebrating Mass with Fr Joe. It was even more special as Fr Joe will soon be leaving for Peru. The theme of the day was Make A Difference as this has been the focus of their work in RE this semester. The students have been exploring many issues around this theme and how each of us can make a difference to the lives of others, and the world in which we live. The students contributed to the Mass with their own prayers and reading the Liturgy of the Word. It is a strength of our community when we can come together in prayer and celebration through the Mass. The rest of the day involved a creative activity that we hope to display on Twilight Evening and the presentation of some amazing speakers. Ron Murray, an Indigenous man, spoke of the work he does at Malmsbury Juvenile Justice Centre. He spoke of the need for the young men to have positive role models. David from MRSC spoke of his work with the youth in the Shire. Christina shared her story about the issues arising for young people and her work at Cobaw. Gabrielle and Martin from the Salvos shared their story of the amazing work done by volunteers in our own backyard. All of these speakers were inspirational in the lives they live and the work that they carry out. I hope that the students gained something from the day, either getting to know each other better, having some time to reflect on their own lives, sharing prayer and being inspired by others.

Farewell to Fr Joe It is with some sadness that Sacred Heart College farewells Fr Joe. Fr Joe has been a wonderful support and Chaplain to our College. He has always been available to us for Masses, Retreats, Reflection Days and Staff Masses. In the relatively short time in Kyneton, Fr Joe has achieved a lot. He has worked tirelessly in moving the parish forward with his work at the Presbytery and the build at Trentham. We will miss Fr Joe but we know that his calling is to the mountains of the Andes. We wish Fr Joe all the best and he will always be in our prayers. God bless you Fr Joe.

COLLEGE NEWS

MUSIC NOTES - Mr Polly Christie

It has once again been a very busy term for the Music Department. We have had students participate in Australian Music Examination Boards exams with great success. This requires the students to play set pieces and scales to an examiner in a one on one situation. We also had performances in General Assemblies, at the Fathers’ Day Breakfast, Senior Citizens Centre – Kyneton and the VET music recital at the Riddell’s Creek Hotel. The standard of performances throughout the term has been outstanding and the cooperation between students has been a delight to witness. Please enter into your diary for next term, the Instrumental Music Recital Evening on Tuesday 17 October commencing at 7pm. On this evening every student enrolled in the instrumental music program performs one solo item. It is a fantastic opportunity for you to see your child at their best. Thursday 16 November, the Music Leaders’ Concert will be held in the Theatre. During Term 3 the Music Coordinators role has been shared by Mrs Helen Duggan and Ms Polly Christie. We have both enjoyed working with the students in the classroom and in an administrative capacity. We look forward to welcoming Mr Terry Carrick back in Term 4 after his long service leave.

‘Share the Dignity’

Year 8 Student Abbey McCalman

Congratulations to Abbey McCalman from Year 8, who was recognised this week on the Kyneton Caring Community Inc.

Facebook page.

During the month of August, Abbey initiated a donation program at the College to support ‘Share the Dignity’, who provide sanitary items for the

homeless and at risk women.

Abbey is completing this as part of her ‘Make a Difference’ portfolio which will be on display at the College Twilight Open Evening on

Thursday 19 October.

Staff managed a close fought 1 goal win! Outstanding game by Kain Scarano, David DeGrandi and Kirsty Short for the staff - Jordan Dyer and Marnie Turner outstanding for the students A big thank you to all of the Health and PE staff for their support and assistance. Also to the students who took part during the week. Thank you!

Day One: Our trip started off pretty slow at Melbourne airport. We had our bags checked and went through customs reasonably quickly, got some food, as we were all starving, and finally boarded the plane. We were all so excited to actually get on the plane but once we were on there all we wanted to do was get off on the other side! It was a 10 hour flight and we were all tired and uncomfortable but really excited at the same time. Thanks to Abby we were able to go and have a look, and a photo, in the cockpit of the plane. When we got off the plane the heat and humidity hit us very quickly. We went through customs and collected our bags, then headed to the train station to catch a train to Ueno. We had an hour train ride then finally got to see where we were. We walked from the train station to our hotel, dumped our bags, changed and then went and had Ramen for dinner. By this time it was about 11 o’clock here (12 o’clock at home) and we were all tired. The day ended with us walking through the 100 yen shop looking at all the things we could buy for $1. We walked home and went straight to sleep; we were all exhausted from our massive day!! Day 2 - Georgia Old This morning, after a very delicious breakfast at the convenience store, we headed off on the train bound for Akihabara (otherwise known as electric town). When we got there our senses were overwhelmed with many bright colours and loud sounds. We went to many shops, took lots of pictures and playeyd games in the arcades. Next, after two trains, we arrived at Tsukuji Fish Market, one of the worlds largest fish markets. After a hungry walk, we found a world class sushi restaurant with amazing and energetic chefs. For most of us it was the first time trying Sashimi, it was very yummy and we all enjoyed it very much. We were all very tired so made the decision to take a rest at a park at nearby Harajuku. After a long break we took a short walk to Takeshita Dori - a shopping street with delicious crepes. We all brought gifts and spent many dollars. Afterwards, we went on a short train ride to Shibuya, Japan's busiest intersection. We got dinner, and took more photos. After a long train ride and a short walk to the youth hostel, we wrote our reflection and went to sleep, so we would be prepared for our big day at Disneyland tomorrow.

Mrs Abigail Bradbury, Positive Education Leader

Taking time to smell the roses While this might sound like a cliché, science has been working hard to prove that it is not just an old adage, but very sage and healthy advice. A study in the Journal of Personality and Individual Differences suggests that appreciating the meaningful things and people in our lives may play an even larger role in our overall happiness than previously thought. Though the report found that appreciation and gratitude both seem to be strongly connected to happiness, its results suggest that appreciation is twice as significant as gratitude in determining overall satisfaction with life. Research continues as to how best to practise appreciation on a daily basis, but for starters, the report suggests that people focus on and value what they have, spend time outdoors, and reflect on their blessings and relationships with others. ‘The challenge in fostering appreciation,’ says Fagan (the writer of the report), ‘is that we want to periodically reflect on the positive aspects of our lives, value our friends and family, relish and savour the good times—without the practice of reflection becoming a rote habit or something that is taken for granted.’
