OPERATION SANTA of Rindge will be underway onNovember 21, 2017!Since its inception in the mid 1980's, the program sponsored by The Rindge Woman's Club, has provided assistance to families in need over the holidays with the placement of "giving trees." Traditionally, one tree was placed at TD Bank in Rindge and another at Walmart.

After 23 years of service to Operation Santa, Walmart will no longer to be able to help out with a tree. We thank them for all of the years that they have dedicated to helping out with Operation Santa and wish them the best. The needs of the children remain and we are hoping that we can count on your continued support by following the trees!

With our deep appreciation TD Bank is continuing their generous support, and trees will also be placed at two new locations in Rindge: Ingalls Library and the Verizon store in the Cheshire Marketplace. The Library and Verizon are excited for the chance to help those in need, and we are grateful for the support!

Please visit one of the three "giving trees" to select a gift tag for a child in need, and once the gift is obtained, please wrap and return it by December 13th to the place where you got the tag.

Each tag represents only one item on a child's wish list and each child has several tags assigned to them. Fictitious names are used so that a child's identity is not released to the public.

Anyone in need of assistance, or if you know of someone who needs help, call Marilyn Griska, 899-3083, as soon as possible.

Please go the extra step to help a child; both you and the child will be pleased that you did. The true meaning of the holiday is giving.

Dave and Diane Panopoulos moved to Rindge from Peabody, MA in 1985 to start their new venture "Pizza Haven." Newlyweds of one year; Diane was expecting her first child (Christine). Diane was a working girl from the city that came to Rindge where there wasn't a supermarket. They credit Hjalmar Aho and the Finnish community as they took this young hard working couple, who were about to raise a family under their wing. This Finnish community supported the couple and this new venture. Without the support it could have been a much different story.

The building that houses Pizza Haven once housed Fogg's Gas Station down on Fogg's Corner. It was moved up to its current location on Rte. 119 when Willis and Evelyn Fogg built the new gas station. Before Dave and Diane opened Pizza Haven it was a Finnish bakery called Elmi's Bakery (owned and operated by Hjalmer's wife). Dave and Diane lived upstairs with their children until the purchase of their home.

Dave and Diane donate to all local church organization fairs, raffles, or auctions. Pizzas are donated to the Conant teams that win championships and pizzas are delivered to the Conant home basketball games at a discounted rate with no delivery fee enabling the athletes to raise even more money for their sports programs.

During the Ice Storm of 2008, Pizza Haven stayed open with the help of their generator to feed the town people; staying late at night to feed the plow truck drivers and National Guard; welcomed those to stay at the restaurant for warmth and made endless pots of coffee; letting them charge their cell phones as they waited. They continued this for five days until they ran out of supplies.

Diane has worked on a number of boards: Rindge chamber, Jaffrey-Rindge Educational Foundation (JREF); hosted the pancake breakfast for JREF for four years; and volunteered at St. Patrick's School. Through

Pizza Haven, Dave and Diane have sponsored many organizations such as Hoops for Hope; Rindge Recreation 5K Race, Trunk or Treat; Heritage Christian School; Stephen Record Scholarship fund raisers; Shelter for the Storm; Kitty Rescue; Police and Fire Departments, and so many more.

They were inducted in the 2014 Franklin Pierce Hall of Fame for 30 years of support to academics and athletes and were also a recipient of the RAMS Business of the Year award.

In their 32 years in Rindge, they have made many lifelong friends to which they consider like family. Diane and Dave have two grown children; Christine Perrina and Peter Panopoulos, four beautiful grandchildren, and an amazing daughter-in-law and son in-law.

Over the years you can hear Dave credit his wife on how hard she works for their business and family. In fact the day we presented this award he repeated it again.

In closing we would like to acknowledge that this is one amazing couple; marriage takes hard work and commitment everyday, but to also work side by side next to your spouse for 32 years; that's inspiring!

Take Action on 'Giving Tuesday'… and BeyondYou probably already know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday – the two big shopping days that follow Thanksgiving. But did you know that Giving Tuesday is observed on Nov. 28? It’s a good time to begin your charitable giving for the holiday season.

You can always give cash to a charitable organization. If the group has received tax-exempt status, your gift can offer you a tax deduction, too.

If you have stocks that have grown significantly in value, you may want to donate them to a charitable group. You will be allowed a charitable deduction for your gift, and you’ll avoid the capital gains taxes you’d have to pay if you sold the stocks, provided you’ve held them for at least a year.

You can also extend your gift-giving to your children or grandchildren by contributing to a 529 college savings plan, which offers high contribution limits and potential tax advantages.

Through your gifts to charitable groups and your family members, you can take the spirit of Giving Day and extend it throughout the holiday season – and even beyond.

Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center received a $2,500 grant from The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund for operating support for the Neighbors-In-Deed program which provides ongoing companionship and support to economically disadvantaged seniors, adults with disabilities, veterans, and military family members so they can remain living in their homes as long as possible. RSVP Volunteers are matched one-to-one to provide help with daily activities such as: friendly visits, transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping and errands, respite, and home repairs.

The Bishop’s Charitable Assistance Fund makes grants to tax-exempt organizations without regard to religious affiliation for projects that help people in New Hampshire meet their basic needs. The Fund is operated by volunteer lay men and women who serve as Directors and who make recommendations to the Bishop of Manchester for grants to any organization in New Hampshire whose mission is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The Fund raises money through solicitation of individuals, businesses and philanthropic organizations.

An annual accounting of funds raised and disbursements is available at www.catholicnh.org/BCAF.

Monadnock RSVP Volunteer Center is a program of Monadnock Family Services, a Monadnock United Way Agency.

Better Safe than Sorry: Safety Tips for Sellers

There’s so much going on when you list your home, for sale it’s easy not to think about safety. Looking at the following tips now, may save you hassle, heartache and headaches later.

1. Keep your house locked. Doors need to be kept locked always. Your home

is being presented and advertised to the public.

2. Stow away valuables. Valuables include everything from the mail left

on the counter to jewelry, artwork, cellphones, gaming systems, etc.

4. Make your house safe for buyers and agents. Are there loose floorboards or carpets? Don’t risk

someone tripping or falling. Also, remove any weapons, firearms, etc. These not only as a safety precaution but also protection from theft.

5. Prescription drugs: Remove or lock them up prior to showings.

There has been a rise in the theft of prescription drugs. This can be avoided by a little pre-planning.

6. Beware of unexpected visitors coming to your doorstep.

Curious people may show up at your door asking to view your home. Have your Agent’s business cards by the door so that you can politely refer them to your agent who ‘handles all showings for your home’.

…because as the saying goes “Better safe than sorry”!

Volunteer New Hampshire’s Spirit Awards

CVTC’s VOLUNTEER DRIVERS will receive state-wide recognition for their selfless efforts. Volunteer NH’s Spirit of New Hampshire Awards honor outstanding contributions to volunteerism throughout the state. Volunteer Service Awards recognize individuals and groups

who provide volunteer services that strengthen communities and improve the lives of the citizens of New Hampshire. These awards honor outstanding volunteers – or groups of volunteers – who reflect the strong ethic of service and volunteerism in our state. Several drivers attended the annual ceremony held at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord on November 7th. “CVTC is so proud to accept this award on behalf of not only our Volunteer Drivers, but for all volunteers across NH who drive those without access to transportation. With each mile driven, our passengers are able to maintain or improve their health and that assures their continued independence,” says Ellen Avery, Executive Director.

New MembersThe Rindge Chamber would like to welcome the Razors Edge Barbershop in Fitzwilliam and Verizon as our newest members.

RAZOR'S EDGE BARBERSHOP

Kevin Kiritsy is the owner of the newest barbershop in town!

Razor’s Edge Barbershop, located off of 202, across from Hannaford’s, opened shy of one month. “We opened on Friday, Oct. 13, a very lucky day!” stated Kevin as he gave a one year old little boy his first

haircut. “Business is great!” he stated. “Last week I had seventeen people in one day and most of them were women!”

Kevin was born in Keene, NH and grew up in Fitzwilliam. He worked in Milford, NH before he opened his own store, for Teddy’s Barber Shop, on the Milford oval.

His business hours are Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m.-12 noon. The address for those of you GPS users is 29 Commercial Lane, Unit 4. Look for him around the right-hand corner of the grey building (Letourneau’s Commercial Centre).

“Come in and have a free cup of coffee and play a round of pool at my pool table while you wait and for those of you who like a straight razor, I do that too!” As you can see, Kevin Kiritsy intends to bring the good old days back to Rindge.

VERIZON

John and James Minahan were born in Lowell, MA and raised by their parents, John and Madeline. Their father

passed away when John was 13 and James was 7. Ever since then, they have been chasing their dream to own and operate a successful business.

Rindge, NH offered a great opportunity to join a community and provide Verizon products with customer service being their main forte. Anytime a customer steps foot in their store they are excited about the opportunity to provide world class service with a smile, ensuring that every customer leaves feeling happy and fulfilled.

John and James look forward to working with and helping members of the community anyway that they possibly can. Their father always preached the importance of helping people anyway possible and that has stuck with them to this day.

Starting November 21, they will be taking part in the “Operation Santa” project sponsored by The Rindge Woman’s Club. In the future they will continue to explore any opportunities to help their new community.

Upcoming Events in the Community/Reminders

Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village, though; He will not see me stopping hereTo watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queerTo stop without a farmhouse nearBetween the woods and frozen lakeThe darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shakeTo ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweepOf easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,But I have promises to keep,And miles to go before I sleep,And miles to go before I sleep.

Gingerbread House Recipe

3/4 cup butter 3 cups all-purpose flour 7/8 cup packed light brown sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon ground ginger1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons ground allspice 1/2 cup molasses 6 egg whites 2 eggs 4 (16 ounce) packages confectioners sugar, sifted

1. Cut out in thin cardboard: a side wall, 4 1/2" x 8 "inches; an end wall, 4 1/2" x 5", a triangular gable, 4 1/2" x 3" x 3"; and a roof rectangle, 4 1/2"x 9". Tape the rectangular end wall piece to the triangular gable piece: match the long side of the triangle, 4 1/2", to one of the 4 1/2" sides of the end wall.

2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in lemon zest, lemon juice, and molasses. Gradually beat in 2 eggs. Sift the flour, baking powder, and spices together; stir into creamed mixture. Wrap dough in parchment paper and refrigerate for 1 hour.

3. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into 6 portions, 2 slightly larger than the others. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the 4 smaller pieces to approximately the size of the side wall and the end wall with gable templates; cut out two of each. Roll out remaining dough, and cut into two rectangular roof pieces. Transfer gingerbread onto greased baking trays.

4. Inapreheated375˚F(190degreesC)oven,bakegingerbreadfor10minutes,oruntilcrisp.Whenremovingfromtheoven,leave the gingerbread on the baking trays for a few minutes to set, then transfer to wire racks. Leave out overnight to harden.

5. In a large bowl, lightly whisk 2 egg whites. Gradually beat in approximately 5 cups confectioners' sugar. The icing should be smooth and stand in firm peaks. Spread or pipe a 9 inch line of icing onto a cake board, and press in one of the side walls so that it sticks firmly and stands upright. If necessary, spread or pipe a little extra icing along either side to help support it. Take an end wall and ice both the side edges. Spread or pipe a line of icing on the board at a right angle to the first wall, and press the end wall into position. Repeat this process with the other two walls until they are all in position. Leave the walls to harden together for at least two hours before putting on the roof. Spread or pipe a thick layer of icing on top of all the walls, and fix the roof pieces in position; the roof should overlap the walls to make the eaves. Pipe or spread a little icing along the crest of the roof to hold the two pieces firmly together. Leave overnight to set firmly.

6. When ready to decorate, make the remaining icing. In a large bowl, lightly whisk 4 egg whites, and mix in remaining confectioners' sugar as before. Use this to make snow on the roof, andtostickvariouscandies fordecoration.Finishwithafine dusting of sifted confectioners' sugar.
