I thank those who were kind enough to attend our parish’s Annual Mass of Remembrance for our Faithfully Departed. I think it was a beautiful reminder of our loved ones and how God embraces them all in His love and mercy. This weekend our parish will host a tremendous seminarian, Dominic Mirenda who hails all the way from West Brandywine Township, Chester County PA. He is a member of Saint Peter Parish which is a neighbor of my previous assignment. He will speak at all the Masses regarding the importance of the annual Saint Charles Seminary Collection. Their goal to support the endeavors of training future priests, deacons and lay catechists is $3.5 Million. Even though the appeal is a direct mailing, a Special Collection will be taken up at the Masses this weekend. If you have not already done so you may place your donation in this collection. If you have already sent your donation directly to the Seminary, there is no obligation to make another donation. Thank you for your support! In the context of the Gospel according to St. Luke, today's passage appears near the end of Jesus' teaching in Jerusalem, just prior to the events that will lead to the Passion and Crucifixion. His warnings and predictions are ominous but can be read in many ways. To those who first heard Luke's Gospel, those may have been words of encouragement. The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans was history (70 A.D.); Catholic theologians would consider his Gospel was written between 80 and 90 A.D. His audience would have been those who were converts from pagan religions to Christianity. St. Luke here tries to interpret the fall of Jerusalem for them and to locate it in God's plans for all humankind (which is called Salvation History). At the same time, Luke is suggesting to his audience that there will be a considerable passing of time before Jesus' final coming. Luke's listeners have likely seen much upheaval and are anxious to know if these are the signs of Jesus' Final Coming. Luke is urging greater patience. In the second part of today's Gospel, Jesus warns that His followers will face persecution for their beliefs. Luke presents persecution as an opportunity for the followers of Jesus for “It will lead to your giving testimony” (Luke 21:13). In persecution, God's wisdom and power will be shown in the example of those who lived the example of Jesus. Perseverance in the face of persecution will lead to their salvation. Here Jesus is assuring His followers that God is present to all believers, even in times of trouble. Ultimately, Jesus will witness this with his own death. As disciples of Jesus, we try to follow his example, trusting in God's mercy and protection, even when we are facing difficulties. And, just a reminder we have just one more week of “Ordinary Time” left before we begin Advent on December 1st of this year. Please know that all of you will be in my prayers as we prepare again for the birth of our Savior at Christmas. We will be posting a schedule for our Advent Penance Service and the Christmas Masses in the up-coming bulletins. Lastly, we had experienced an unfortunate computer clitch and some of our parishioners who had already donated to the Block Collection received reminder letters. To ensure your contribution was recorded, please contact Mrs. Jackson between 9 AM and 4 PM, Monday thru Friday. We apologize for any inconvenience and concern this may have caused you. Father Rossi

Vincentian Message…

The Gospel predicts the end of times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus do if he were in my place now?” Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent DePaul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving happily.

Christmas Giving Tree We invite all the families of the parish to think of the less fortunate and those who are struggling this Christmas. Our Parish Family Christmas Tree is a special way to brighten someone’s Christmas. Please choose one of the tree ornaments which will indicate the gender, age, size and item of the gift to be purchased. When you wrap your gift, PLEASE secure the ornament to the OUTSIDE of the package. Please place the gift in front of the Blessed Mother by 1:30 PM on December 15th. All gifts will be distributed by the St. Vincent DePaul Society in the name of St. Anselm Parish. If you need the helping hand of the Lord this season, or know of a parish family that needs His help, please call the Parish Center so we may include your family, or another, on the Giving Tree.

Parishioners in Need

Unemployment, lack of work, and layoffs have caused some of our families to experience a loss of income. Our charitable outreach to these families at Thanksgiving and Christmas (food, gifts, and gift cards) will allow them to take the money that they are not spending for these things and use it for utility bills, mortgage payments, etc. If you know of parishioners in this situation who we can help, please call either Father Rossi, Father Mekonnen, Deacon Warner or Deacon Whartenby. People who are willing to donate to assist these families are asked to do so as “Thanksgiving or Christmas Outreach.”

THANKSGIVING MASS On Tuesday, November 26, 2019 the Saint Anselm St. Vincent de Paul Society will hold an annual Thanksgiving Mass in the Church at 7:00 P.M. All are invited to join us as we call some attention to the plight of those who hunger and, in some small way, attempt to alleviate that hunger in our area. The children of St. Anselm School and CCD will be collecting canned goods which will be donated to those in need. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

May we always remember the words of Jesus, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren that you do unto me.”

CARING FOR FRIENDS A very special “Thank You” to all who continue to cook and replenish the meals for Caring for Friends. We are most grateful for your support. As the need for assistance becomes greater during the up-coming months, we encourage you to continue to provide meals and we would welcome NEW participation. If you are able to make extra when preparing your dinners, there are containers in the History Room in which to place a meal and provide dinner for someone in need.
