Board News: During the summer, the Board had a retreat using the Board Basics Series which covers all aspects of Board lifeand responsibilities. Now the Board of Trustees is reading Dan Hotchkiss’ book, Governance and Ministry: Rethinking BoardLeadership. UUA has distributed a draft Ministerial Agreement which will be effective next year as a template. Those who attended ourNovember Congregational meeting got a copy as well as draft by law changes. A Report from the United Nations & Global Affairs CommitteeBy Dana Burch, Chair
Several weeks ago in October, the church's UNGA program hosted a panel of experts aboutYemen's humanitarian crisis. Our unique panel included a leader from Human Rights Watch(HRW), a scholar affiliated with Columbia Law School's Human Rights Institute, and also thefounder of Yemen Aid.
We aimed to lift up the work of Yemen Aid, an NYC charity launched in response to the grave crisisin the middle east's poorest country. Now, weeks after our event, we are pleased to share thatYemen Aid has been experiencing success in its own new work. See the Facebook page to learn
more and support the organization's direct aid Our own Community Church of NY Facebook page featured the event with more detailson our panel participants. (Both links can be found on our home page www.ccny.org under Welcome / Do Justice.
Thanks go to George Garland for suggesting this critical and timely social witness for the church. Valerie Lynch helped by introducingus again to Omar Al Fotihi who conceived and organized many of the details for us.
The Yemen panel also added to our series of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.A ceremony celebrating this anniversary will be held after Fellowship Hour on December 9 in the Chapel.

THANKSGIVING SERVICE ~ REMAINING RELEVANT
The service was led by the Shelter Committee and several shelter guests. We learned about the personal impact of homelessness and how Community Church works to help those affected. A tour of the Helene & BJ’s Place was offered after Fellowship Hour.
Our current exhibit—LOCAL INSPIRATION—opened in November as a celebrationour own New York City.
Central Park at Dusk by Patricia Garbarini is just one of the artworks featured inthis exciting exhibit. The artists of Gallery35 have found the city a rich source ofinspiration. While Garbarini says, “Dusk can be a magical time in Central Park,”John Devaney is excited by “the dizzying parade of faces, bodies, storefronts,
and inexplicable shapes that swirl around me every day.”
Marcia Peruo finds inspiration in “years of Manhattan’s never ending construction – sidewalk bridges, scaffolding, beams pipes, concrete....” and Teresa Hommel by the flowers in the Union SquareGreenmarket, especially the dahlia bouquets.
Bev Thompson has been portraying man’s best friend at Gallery35 for the past ten years. SPOT—her latest pencil, graphite, and china marker piece—portrays a 30-foot Dalmatian dog balancing a taxi on his nose outside NYU Langone Children’s Hospital at 34th and 1st Avenue, the creation of American Sculpture, Donald Lipski.
Exhibiting are Ana-Nina Kovalenko, Bev Thompson, Cari Clare, Denise Fryburg, Ellen Mandelbaum, John Devaney, Jil Novenski, Jody Leight, Kevin H. Maxwell, Lois Ross, Marsha Peruo, Patricia Garbarini, Susan Harris-Demmet and Teresa Hommel.
If you have yet to see this exhibit, be sure to attend our festive Closing Reception on January 5th from 6-8 pm.
A second winter exhibit, INTERIORS, opens with an Artists’ Reception on SaturdayJanuary 26th from 6-8pm.
John Devaney will be showing two paintings inspired by the bedroom scene from KingKong (1933). In Midtown Suite, there’s a monstrous intrusion into the dreamlike, lush interior. In Midtown – The Male Gaze,
the two lovers are seemingly safe insidewhile a dark terror looms just outside.
In a different vein, Virginia Asman will be exhibiting digital renditions of photographs she took ofthe interior of a Ra Paulette man-made cave she visited after moving to New Mexico. Ra Pauletteis an American cave sculptor based in New Mexico who digs into hillsides to sculpt elaborateartistic spaces inside mountains. Since he began sculpting in 1990, he has dug over a dozencaves in New Mexico, this one a liveable space with electricity and running water.
Please visit our Gallery35 website: www.gallery35nyc.com and watch for church announcementsfor additional details and updates on all of our exhibits.
