1ASTORAL PRAYER: December 28, 1986

laD, ti1e spirit of this Holy Season is all too short!

We have our high moments of celebration, and then it's all over.

The gifts are unwrapped. The family meals are over. The friends depart. The tree is taken down, the decorations packed away. The students prepare to head back to school. Christmas is over for another year!

We mix the secular customs up with our spiritual celebrations.

When the customs and traditions of the Christmas Season are over, the spirit seems to flicker and then dies out. ~oon the feelings of Christmas are forgotten.

ORD, we need to find ways to keep the spirit of Christmas alive all year.

Help us to continue expressing our good wishes to others. From the custom of wishing others a "merry Christmas",

help us now to continue wishing others peace and hope, joy and love.

From the custom of sending beautiful cards with.a message ot happiness and good health, help us to continue sending greetings of good will.

Help us to continue giving gifts -

For it is in giving that we are blessed, it is in giving that we show interest in

others.

ORO, we remember how the shepherds went away from the manger, glorif.ying and praising You for all they had heard and seen,

We have reason to praise You every day of the year, because You were born to live forever.

We give you thanks, Lord, that You are not only in the past, but that you are also in the future. Help us to remember this as we prepare to walk into a New Year - to know that even there You are present to lead us and to guide us.

All this, in the name and spirit of Christ, our Lord and Master 1 and Saviour.

NUMBER FOUR (Used: 12/28/75)

INTRODUCTION Remaininq in a prayerful spirit, let us inter into a time of silent meditation.

In these moments, let us ponder the pattern our lives have been weaving as on this last Sunday of the old year we come into the Presence of Him whom our faith declares to be the source of all life, All love, and all healing.

In quietness, let each pray as the heart may prompt.

MEDITATION

"We dwell in the shelter of the Almighty, for He is .our refuge and our fortress. "

"They that wait upon the LOrd.shall renew their strength -

They shall mount up with wings as eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint"

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God"

LORD Is PRAYER

of our hearts ••••

Hear our prayers, o God, for others as well as for ourselves •••• offered to thee on.the altars

Spoken in the naee and spirit of Jesus who taught us to say when we pray:

"OUr Father, who art in heaven:

Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen"

Even when no one else could stand him, Bob Cratchit toasted him every Christmas eve. He knew that he was loved.

He knew that he was needed. Tiny Tim might live if Scrooge got with it. The town could be a better place to live were he to turn loose some of what he had to give.

MESSAGE OF CHRISTMAS Friends, this is the message of this Holy Season. You are loved. You are needed. To spurn that love and ig

nore that need is to die. To answer "yes" is to pass from death back to life. Wise Hen came to Christmas and 1r1ent home - vJent back - another way. So, too, can we1 And so may it be.

PRAYER Open our eyes, 0 God, to the possibilities of Your grace always at work, the wonders that love can accomplish, and grant that all who feel the

pull of Christmas in these days - even in the meagerest ways - may come to knm..r Jesus -not by hearsay, but by intimate, personal experience.

And may we, too, because of the warmth and wonder of these love-filled days, go home as did the "\rliae Men, by another way. In the spirit of the Child of Bethlehem, we pray. Amen
