Operation Red Nose

Operation Red Nose, a volunteer-run fundraising ini-

tiative, has been getting people and their vehi-cles home safely during the holidays for 15 years.

More than 400 volun-teers work this program annually. The Kamloops chapter is a fundraiser for Pacific Sport Interior B.C., a non-profit society that works to develop and enhance sport in the region.

“We pick people up

and drive them home in their own vehicles,” says Katie Klassen, program coordinator for Operation Red Nose. “It’s all by donation.”

Operation Red Nose runs in the evenings of Nov. 25, 26 and Dec. 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 30 and 31 this year. Rides are available from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

“We are always look-ing for more volunteers,” Klassen says.

Volunteer positions include designated driv-

ers, escort drivers, navi-gators, phone operators and dispatchers.

Volunteer application forms are located at the Tournament Capital Centre, RCMP office, Volunteer Kamloops and Desert Gardens Community Centre. Or, call Katie at 250-320-0650.

CP HOlidayTrain

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train hits the rails again, visiting more than 140 communities across North

America. The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness.

This is one of the largest fundraisers for the Kamloops Food Bank.

At each event, the Holiday Train pro-vides a box car stage, a line up of great musical talent and a corporate contri-bution to the local food bank. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region provides Christmas hampers, primarily to single parent families that

use our programs. Given that many of our families have such a difficult time in December, a hamper is one way of mak-ing it into a Christmas to remember.

Individuals or companies may request a family (or two) and put a hamper together, or make a donation and Big Brothers Big Sisters will put it together and deliver it on their behalf. Last year we were able to provide more than 50 hampers thanks to the generous support we received. Food Bank Facts

Christmas is the most important time of year for the

Kamloops Food Bank and Outreach society, both in terms of donation, and also in terms of demand.

The Food Bank exists to support individuals in the community that have insufficient resources to meet their monthly expenses, such as rent, utilities, food, medical needs, etc.

In 2010, 6,931 individu-als accessed the services

at the Kamloops Food Bank, in addition to the 36 community agencies that received food to create meal programs.

Thirty-two per cent of the clients are children under 18.

In 2010, 614,453 pounds of perishable food was collected, much of this through the Food Bank’s Food Share program. Twenty local grocery stores, bakeries and other food outlets donate their close-dated, perishable

food to the Food Share program. The food is picked up using the Food Bank’s three-tonne refrig-erated truck and returned to the Food Bank where it is sorted, cleaned and placed in cold storage for immedi-ate distribution.

The Food Bank also provides hampers for the transient. These hampers contain canned goods with easily removable lids, as well as food that requires little preparation.

Spirit of Christmas Train

Join the Kamloops Heritage Railway on the Spirit of Christmas

Train pulled by the 2141 steam locomotive. Those on board will be trans-ported to a Christmas of old with carollers, tradi-tional music and travel-lers mingling on the plat-form with a variety of familiar Christmas char-acters.

Passengers make their way across the trestle bridge and over the ice covered river to St.

Joseph’s Historic Church where they’ll pick up Santa and the Elves and bring them back into Kamloops.

The Spirit of Christmas train boards at the restored CN Station located at Station Plaza, 510 Lorne St.

Entertainment begins 30 minutes before depar-ture so passengers should

plan to arrive and be in place early.

The 10th season of The Daily News Christmas Cheer

Fund is upon us.Over the last nine years,

the Christmas Cheer Fund has taken $394,201.68, all of it donated by readers and friends, and spread it among local charities.

Last year, you gave us a record $83,736.74 and, because The Daily News covers costs associated with the fund, every penny of it was turned

over to local charities.This year, as we did a

year ago, we asked local charities to apply for con-sideration. Those applica-tions then were turned over to our six-person selection committee, and it has made its selections.

This year, the beneficia-ries of your Christmas Cheer Fund will be:• Boys & Girls Club of Kamloops;• Family Tree Family Centre;• Kamloops Food Bank;

• Marjorie Willoughby-Snowden Hospice Home;• New Life Mission; and• YMCA-YWCA ‘Y’ Women’s Emergency Shelter.

These are six local orga-nizations, each of which provides help for those who need it the most.

BC Wildlife Park Wildlights

It has become tradition during the holiday season in Kamloops to head out to the B.C. Wildlife Park to witness

the sights and spectacle of the annual Wildlights celebration.

This is the 14th Annual Wildlights Festival and features an all new spec-tacular laser light show.

Family favourites will be back once more. Look for more than 600,000 lights and 360 rope light sculptures. Visitors can also try the Wildlife Challenge in the new and larger Giant Maze, and then make a trip around the park on the Wildlife Express miniature train.

Uncle Chris the Clown will perform nightly by the Log Cabin, Santa makes

an appearance, and there will also be wagon rides to the North Pole. Visit the Home Hardware Family Farm, and check out some of the indoor activities.

Wildlights runs from Dec. 9 to Jan. 2, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and is closed on Christmas Day.
