Prayers for the ChurchAnglican Church in North America: The Anglican Network in Canada; Bishop Charles Masters and his wife Judy; Bishop John Harvey and his wife Trudy; Bishop Trevor Walters and his wife Dede; Bishop Malcolm Harding and his wife Marylou; Bishop Andy Lines and his wife Mandy; Bishop Stephen Leung and his wife Nona; and Bishop Ron Ferris and his wife Jan.

The Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) traces its roots to the Anglican “Essentials” movement and Essentials’ founding theological statement, the 1994 Montreal Declaration, which defined the “essentials” of the Anglican expression of the Christian faith. In 2005, the Anglican Network in Canada was established, together with the Anglican Federation, as the two constituent partners in Anglican Essentials Canada (AEC).

In 2007, ANiC announced that it would provide episcopal oversight for Canadian Anglicans and parishes that no longer had a home in the Anglican Church of Canada. Under the moderator, Bishop Donald Harvey, and the primatial jurisdiction of Archbishop Gregory Venables, Primate of the Anglican Church of South America, ANiC received a number of churches and individuals into membership. In 2009, the Anglican Church in North America was constituted and ANiC became a founding diocese of this now 100,000-member Church.

Having begun with 17 churches, ANiC has now expanded to 70 parishes in nine Canadian provinces, with another five in two American states (Massachusetts and Vermont). There is a vibrant ministry to and by Chinese, Japanese, Sudanese, Iranian, and Filipino immigrants. The church now numbers about 7,850 members. (Sources: Diocesan website and Wikipedia.)

Please pray especially for continued church plants and growth.

Encouragement for your prayer timeGrace is God’s kindness to the guilty and undeserving. “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. " (John 1:16) “ … and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. " (Romans 3:24)

Cash/check donations need to be received either in the mail by Saturday, Dec. 29, or in church services on the 29th or 30th.

Stock transfers need to be initiated by Tuesday, Dec. 18, to allow for transfer, settlement hold, and proceeds disbursement, which is done by check via mail.

Part 2 of forum on youth and culture todayFr. Shane Tucker will present the last of a two-week video-based conversation on Youth and Culture during the Adult Forum today from 10:15 to 11 a.m.

“Helping Gen Z Build a Biblical Worldview” with Jonathan Morrow will explore the challenges that Gen Z (generally defined as those born between 1995 and 2009) faces to their faith emotionally, morally, and intellectually to an extent generations before them have not. In this conversation, Morrow will discuss three things every young person needs to have a transformed worldview.

Fr. Ron to lead Holy Land pilgrimage in 2019Fr. Ron Baird is planning to lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land this coming year. The 11-day trip will depart Columbus for New York on Monday, May 27, where we’ll take an overnight flight to Tel Aviv, Israel. We’ll will return on Thursday, June 6.

The pilgrimage will take us from Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, to his boyhood home of Nazareth. We’ll visit Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee, where he began his earthly ministry and called his first disciples. And in the Holy City of Jerusalem we’ll walk the Via Dolorosa, following in our Lord’s footsteps to the Cross of Golgotha, and finally to the place of the empty tomb, where the angel proclaimed that “He is not here. He is risen!”

Flyers with details of the pilgrimage are available at the Information Desk in the Narthex, and Fr. Ron will hold an information meeting to answer any questions in early January.

Come join us on this awe-inspiring and life-changing journey!

Today is last call for participantsThe St. Andrew’s Choir, along with children and youth of St. Andrew’s, will present the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols during the Liturgy of the Word at the 9 a.m. service on the last Sunday in Advent, Dec. 23. We need to know by this weekend at the latest if your child or grandchild will be participating in this, our third annual presentation of this Advent tradition. Please touch base with Tally Whitehead at [email protected] or 740-548-5112, ext. 5, or see her in church this Sunday. We look forward to the participation of as many children and youth as possible, including any college students home for the holidays. Depending on the number of participants, toddlers through children in first or second grade will be manger animals, and children in second or third to fifth or sixth grade will be angels and shepherds. Middle School students, from oldest to youngest, will be offered the roles of wise men, Mary, Joseph and Gabriel. When you RSVP, please include your child’s first and second choice for parts and we will try to accommodate the best we can.Costumes for manger animals will be black bottoms (pants, tights or leggings) for all, and a long sleeve top or turtleneck in white for sheep, brown for oxen, and gray for donkeys. Some costumes for the other parts will be provided, and we’ll let you know about any other costume needs once we know how many participants we have.Students in 8th grade and above will read the Scripture lessons, and as in the past Lori Cornett will be organizing a strings ensemble, which is open to our youth and young adults, to accompany on certain carols.

Rehearsal Saturday, Dec. 22 There will be a rehearsal for those participating on Saturday, Dec. 22, between 9 and 11 a.m. We plan to stagger arrival times so toddlers

come later and won’t have to be there for the entire time. We will confirm arrival times for rehearsal once we have a final head count for all parts. Musicians may have a slightly different rehearsal time.

About the Festival of Nine Lessons and CarolsEdward White Benson, later to become the Archbishop of Canterbury, designed the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 1880 for use on Christmas Eve in Cornwall, England. In 1918, King’s College in Cambridge, England began performing the Festival of Lessons

and Carols each year, and in the United States, the Groton School in Massachusetts has been performing the festival annually since 1928.

Performances of the Nine Lessons and Carols have since become an Advent tradition throughout much of the Anglican Communion. The festival tells the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus through nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.

Deacon Becky Spanos recalls early days of Anglicans for LifeBefore there was a worldwide Anglicans for Life, fully embraced by the Anglican Church in North America, there was the National Organization of Episcopalians for Life (NOEL). Before NOEL, there were Episcopalians for Life, just a few folks with vigor but no cohesion. In 1974, I was on the bus to the first March for Life. I was a brand new Episcopalian and that march changed my life forever.

Until the late 1970s, Episcopalians did not march as a group. A lady from Maryland and I had no way of identifying each other at the march where we met, and no signs are allowed in the Senate Office Building, so I put together a wearable “vestment” with “Episcopalians for Life” on one side, and “Pittsburgh, PA” on the other. Kathy and I met; the rest is history. Forty-plus years later, this is a constant reminder of the sanctity of life.

Please pray for life, and consider attending the Jan. 18 March for Life. Please see Fr. Shane for details if you can go.

About St. NicholasSt. Nicholas was born in the 3rd century in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). After his wealthy Christian parents died, he used his entire inheritance to help the poor, the sick, and children in need. Nicholas gave in secret, expecting nothing in return. He became Bishop of Myra while still a young man, was later imprisoned for his faith, and attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. One story tells of Nicholas throwing gold coins through an open window into stockings hanging in a poor man’s house. This provided a dowry for his three daughters, thus saving them from slavery. His feast day is December 6.

The Daily Lectionary and next week’s Sunday Lectionary are available in a leaflet at the Information Desk, and online under the Scripture & Prayer tab at standrewspolaris.org.
