Unit S, Lesson 1Christmas (Luke 2)
This is the story of how Jesus was born.
The king at that time, Caesar Augustus, ordered a census to be taken throughout the kingdom. A census was when everyone had to go back to their hometown to be counted. Based on those numbers, the king would know how much to tax people in each city.
So Joseph and Mary (his fiancée, who was pregnant) went from the town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem, their hometown, so they could be counted for the census.
While they were there, Mary gave birth to her first child, a baby boy which she named Jesus.
She wrapped Him in strips of cloth and laid Him in a manger (which was a trough that animals would eatout of), because try as they might, they couldn’t find a place to stay because of all the people who had come into town for the census, and the only place they could find to shelter in was where animals stayed.
That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel appeared among them, and the landscape shone bright with the glory of the Lord.
They were very frightened by all this, but the angel reassured them by saying, “Don’t be afraid! I bring you the best news that anyone could ever hear. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born tonight in Bethlehem! You will find Him as a baby wrapped in cloth, lying in a manger!”
Suddenly, the angel was joined with a multitude of angels all praising God, singing, “Glory to God in the highest heaven and peace on earth for all people.”
Then the angels left, and the shepherds said to each other, “Come on! Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this wonderful thing that has happened!”
They ran to the village and found their way to Mary and Joseph. And there was the Baby, lying in the manger. The shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this Child. Everyone who heard the shepherds’ story were amazed. The shepherds praised God for what they had seen and heard.
A short time later, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the local temple for a special ceremony, where they present-ed Him to God, gave thanks and asked for God’s special blessing on His life.
Now, there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon who was devoted to God. God had made a special promise to him that he would not die before he had seen God’s chosen Leader and Savior. And on this day, that promise was fulfilled because Mary and Joseph came to the temple, and he got to see Jesus.
Simeon took Jesus in his arms and began praising God, saying,“God, just as you have promised, here he is! The Savior of the world, a light to bring salvation to everyone.”
There was also a prophetess, Anna, who was there. She recognized who Jesus was and gave thanks to God and spoke about all that Jesus would do to make a way for people to be redeemed.
When Joseph and Mary finished the ceremony, they returned to Nazareth. And Jesus grew and became strong; He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor and blessing was on Him.
