Christmas is GivingAt Christmas, NewHope provides Coles and Woolworths Food Gift Cards to people in need that are connected to NewHope through ministries and programs. This includes Blackburn North, Croydon and Surrey Hills, the Preschool and Community Care, our Persian and Brazillian Communities, CAP clients, Dinner Tonite, Jubilee Housing, Soccer Club, as well as families and individuals. Food hampers will continue to be supplied to several of our partners, including the Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Ministry, led by Cath Solomon, and to ‘drop ins.’ Vouchers allow people the dignity and empowerment of choice during this season. As NewHope is such a multi-cultural community where foods vary significantly, we would like people to enjoy their foods at Christmas and give them the ability to choose the same, just like you and me.

To give to “Christmas is Giving” purchase one of the following from Coles or Woolworths to the value of your choosing ($10, $20, $25 & $50 increments are ideal). Place it in an envelope marked “Christmas is Giving” and deposit it into the offering at any worship service no later than Sunday 11th December. The earlier we receive your gift, the easier it is for Community Care to distribute your gifts.

Non-perishable food donations will continue to be received and can be placed in the blue collection bins at NewHope Blackburn and Croydon, as we assist our partners and stock the food pantry to address need through the Summer months.

Donations of gifts and kids toys will be received through Kids Church and the Community Care House, 522 Middleborough Rd. 9897 3288, Monday – Thursday.

Thank you for your participation and we look forward to sharing the good news stories with you early in 2017

The “Coles Gift Card”.

This is the gift card that needs to be purchased from Coles itself as it is the only gift card that you cannot buy alcohol or cigarettes with. All Coles stores carry this card. If you cannot find it, ask at the customer service desk. You can nominate the amount you would like to put on the card.

The “Groceries” or “Essential Card” from Woolworths.

It comes in increments of $5, $10, $15, $20, $50 or there is a purple essential card that you can place your own dollar amount on. Purchase of cigarettes and alcohol is not permitted on this card, nor can it be used to buy other gift cards. Not all stores have the groceries only card on hand, but you can purchase it online: everydaygiftcards.com.au

Melbourne Marathon

A big thank you to all participants, supporters and sponsors of the recent Melbourne Marathon. Together we raised over $9100 for NewHope Community Care which is a splendid effort. It was a very positive experience of teamwork and goodwill for all. We had so much fun, we will be doing this all again next year. So please get your running shoes on and watch this space.

ESLWould you like to help people learn English?

On Sunday mornings ESL@NewHope helps people from other countries learn English. 80+ people attend classes at either 9.00am or 11.00am on Sunday mornings. Our 9.00-10.30a.m team needs some extra helpers next year.

You don’t have to be a teacher! You can start by assisting an experienced leader with a small group of learners. If you are a bi-lingual Chinese/English speaker we would love to have you assist one of our beginner classes.

For more information about this opportunity to join a happy and growing ministry, ring Marilyn Burke (0412989646 or 9884 8343) or email [email protected].

Building for God’s Glory UPDATEThe physical work has begun! The permit required to demolish the house at 520 Middleborough Rd has arrived. Once the final building permit comes (due any day), work on the carpark and the Preschool will ramp up. The new playground and work inside the Preschool needs to be completed by the end of January ready for their new year. The upstairs office will be moved on 12th December, so that the area can be renovated by the end of January. The main building will be closed to the public 9th-13th January.

There is a need for carpenters to be involved before Christmas and during January. Please be prayerful for safety on and around the work site, for our site manager Warren Hill and for our build co-ordinator Jordan Hill. Check out newhope.net.au/BFGG. Pledges and gifts towards the project are most welcome. (See Giving page or website)

NewHope Preschool staff would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and God’s richest blessings for the year to come. We have enjoyed a delightful and busy year of learning and care for 80 children and their families and we celebrate connections, joy peace, transformation and unity in the Preschool.

It has been such a privilege to experience many amazing opportunities to connect strongly with the community through pastoral care, various transitions, network meetings and the privilege of being at the forefront of a number of initiatives including the implementation of our own Wellbeing Policy and through our involvement in a pilot study with Deakin University (‘Active Children Happy Minds’). We are thankful for and acknowledge some great feedback from our parent survey which indicated that 100% of families would recommend the Preschool to others. The Preschool team serve with happiness, calling and purpose in Christ, who provides immeasurably more than we dare dream! NewHope Preschool has just one vacancy in our four year old funded Preschool group for 2017. Be quick to enrol through W.P.S.A. or contact Melissa Adam (Director) or Kate Bonda (Enrolments) to find out more. Email: [email protected]: (03) 9898 2075

Families Outreach

We’re making exciting plans for 2017. This year we’ve had hundreds of local families coming into the church each week with their preschoolers looking for connections. Would you consider helping us to welcome them? Anyone with a smile to share and hands to help would be welcome to join our growing team of volunteers sharing the love of Jesus. We particularly need people to help host our PlaySpace with Chris on Tuesday and Friday mornings; greeting families, playing with the children, setup and packing up the room and helping serve. Other needs include helping with our playgroup ministry on Wednesdays, speaking English with our Chinese families at mainly music (Monday or Thursday mornings), playing with children while our Seedlings mums gather for bible study on Friday mornings and working with our Persian playgroup of families new to Australia on Tuesdays. If you have a heart to share in our ministry to young families and have a free morning in the week, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
