December 2012, January 2013
President’s Message…
Almost Thanksgiving! I am giving thanks to the Southwest Florida Community Foundation for the $5000 grant that Ft. Myers Beach Art Association received November 7th. The original request was for $21,000 for an Arts & Attraction Grant. There is
a great deal of competition for these monies and
the FMBAA is grateful to have gotten the grant. Now it is up to the Board of Directors to use the money in such a way that we will be considered in the 2013 grant cycle. During the summer months the FMBAA was pleased to be asked to participate in a study to determine the economic benefits to Lee County from arts organizations. The Arts & Attraction Grant is based on attracting visitors and participates to events, classes and workshops from
outside Lee, Collier and Hendry Counties. This economic impact of non-profit arts and cultural organizations study shows how much income the arts provides to this community. The study shows that $23.23 is spent by one person at an event. This amount includes food, lodging, purchases of items and transportation. So audience impact was part of the study. Now we know in factual terms what organizations such as ours means to the local economy. I am so proud of our FMBAA as we are a totally volunteer organization that brings positive
benefits to the busineses of our island. You should be proud to be a member and I congratulate you in being part of this success. There is a lot going on in the next two months so read the BrushOff carefully. Kathy Taylor does a great job and includes all the information you need to participate and have fun.

far but more are welcome. Thanks to Pauline
Healey who has matted and bagged the new minis
that are just waiting for Art Divine to appear.
So get out your paintbrushes and papers and
make a couple for this year's project. A small
image of 3x5 gets matted into an 8x10 mat. Use at

Artist Profile...Lisa Grinter
Lisa Grinter has had a lifelong career in art
education and is a certified art teacher. She is
originally from the Miami area where she taught
art for grades K-4th for 25 years. Lisa and her
husband Bob moved to Fort Myers Beach in 1981
and owned an arts and crafts store here until 1988.
Lisa continued her teaching through their store, at
Michi’s, at several area art leagues, and for
community organizations. Lisa says that she finds
her “paint along” teaching method to be effective
with beginning students who learn by doing.
Originally Lisa painted in oil but now works with
acrylics. She says oils and acrylics allow her to be
impetuous to a degree and to go back to achieve
the result she wants. Lisa takes inspiration for her
paintings from nature, preferably on location. “I
like to show what is in the landscape but the way I
see it as opposed to realism.” She likes to try
different approaches in her paintings and enjoys
taking workshops.
Lisa has served on the board of the FMBAA, wrote the Brush Off together with Lee Ackert, and was our president in 2000. Now she is painting with the outdoor painters, has slimmed her teaching schedule down to one weekly class and is focusing more on her own painting. Looking back over her years with the FMBAA Lisa says we have great cooperation from the members who are willing to pitch in for the association.
Neil Walling published Neil Walling has published two new books that
feature his paintings. “Leenau, The Road Less
Traveled” is about 160 pages and has about 75
paintings and 80 photos from the Leelanau
Peninsula. The second book “Michigan Portfolio” is
more for artists and has about 40 paintings and 50
pages. It includes the notes I use in the workshops I
have taught. Both books are available at
www.createspace.com/3880681 or enter Neil
