About today’s musicPentecost is perhaps my favorite day in the church year, the birthday of the church! In Acts 2:1-13 we are told the story of the day of Pentecost. The disciples are gathered when “suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind”, and “there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit was giving them utterance.” Today we have lots of spirit-filled music. I hope you can hear the rushing wind, tongues of fire, and the excitement of a room filled with many languages in our music today!

Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) composed his Prélude, Adagio et Choral varié as a student under Charles-Marie Widor at the Paris Conservatory in 1930. Highly meticulous in his craft, Duruflé published only eleven opus numbers, four of which were for organ. Today, I’ll be playing the third portion of this triptych, which is a set of variations based on the plainsong chant, Veni Creator written for Pentecost. Duruflé’s style is characterized by masterful counterpoint and color. His unique colors and style of writing is much like the Impressionistic painters of the day.

Our introit for today, O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness was composed in 2013 by Dr. Martin Neary, LVO, former Master of Choristers at Westminster Abbey, and famously directed the music for Princess Diana’s funeral. This short piece sets the tone for Pentecost with the plainsong chant, Veni Creator, as previously heard in today’s prelude.

The anthem, Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit, arranged by William L. Dawson directed the Tuskegee Choir in Alabama from 1931-1955. He brought a more lively approach to traditional spirituals, which were shared with audiences at Radio City Music Hall and at FDR’s home in Hyde Park, NY. His compositions and 100 voice touring choir, brought attention to the important work of keeping spirituals alive.

Harold Friedell’s famous work, Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether tethers us with the disciples, who gathered at Christ’s table, linking us through the Holy Spirit. The final verse is a powerful statement, “All our meals and all our living make as sacraments to thee.” Through “caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be”. This is a favorite of the FPC Choir!

The communion music, Variations on Palm Beach was composed by Gerre Hancock, organist and choirmaster at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, New York City from 1971-2004. This original hymn and set of variations was a commission for the Association of Anglican Musicians conference in 2000, with the tune name, Palm Beach, is named after the location of the conference. Today, his original hymn will be sung alternating verses and the variations set for organ. Do we hear waves in his variations?

The postlude today is the final movement from Charles-Marie Widor’s Sixth Symphony for organ. Widor was Duruflé’s teacher at the Paris Conservatory, and coached Duruflé on his composition above. The Final from the Sixth Symphony is pure fireworks! I hope you depart today filled with the Holy Spirit!

Soli deo Gloria, Victoria
