Dr Christopher Allan is a senior lecturer in Voice at the University of Newcastle. He is
well known as a baritone soloist and enjoys singing regularly in ensembles such as the
Sydney based professional chorus Cantillation and the Hunter based quartet Waxing
Lyrical.
Chris holds the post of Artistic and Musical Director of the Newcastle University
Choir. He has directed performances of major works of the choral literature. In 2011 he
successfully completed his doctoral thesis looking at the use of modal voice as a catalyst
in encouraging a classical vocal sound in developing singers.
Singer, songwriter, musical director, entertainer, actor, presenter, vocal
coach, presentation and performance coach, broadcaster and motivational
speaker.
Brooklyn, New York-born and raised, Francine Bell started singing at the
age of 5. Significantly influenced by years of singing in church, she later
joined the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art (part of New
York’s School of Performing Arts, inspiration for the film, stage production,
and television series Fame) where she studied voice.
The list of Francine’s achievements and appearances is long and impressive, from musicals such as Nine
to movies including The Matrix Revolution and Superman Returns; from regular TV performances on
Good Morning Australia and The Ray Martin Show, to performing for the Queen’s 80th birthday
celebrations. Francine is one of a kind and is therefore regularly sought out to perform and feature.
Greater than these accolades though, is the common knowledge that when you get to hear and watch
Francine, you are witnessing a beautiful and passionate performance and performer, hearing her story
and personality come through every note.
Terence Koo Trio—Terence on piano, Andrew Wallace on double bass and Robert Coxon on drums
The Terence Koo Trio is an exciting, highly acclaimed jazz ensemble. Led by pianist Terence Koo, the
group embraces a wide range of jazz genres, ranging from reinvented rock/pop songs, soulful blues, to
swinging standards, to delicate ballads and moody soundscape pieces. Their music has been described as
fun, lyrical, smooth, passionate, exhilarating, but most of all accessible.
Rob Coxon was born in Newcastle and graduated with a Diploma in Art (Education) at Newcastle
National Art School. He won numerous prizes for his art before choosing to pursue a career as a
professional drummer. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals around the country, and he has
backed a list of international performers too long to include here. Rob has been described as a drummer
of rare precision and a true gentleman, and still finds time to exhibit his art in exhibitions both local and
in Sydney.
Andrew Wallace is a local multi-instrumentalist and teacher, currently juggling full-time work as a
secondary music teacher with his long-standing professional music activities in the region. A sought-after
double-bassist, he has forged a reputation for creativity and originality as an accompanist and band
leader in a diverse sphere of Newcastle’s musical life. Andrew performs regularly with many local groups,
on the double bass.
Terence Koo is an Australian jazz pianist, composer,
lecturer, teacher and recording artist. Born in Singapore,
Terence holds a Master of Arts (Music), a Bachelor of Music,
First Class Honours, the University Medal, an A.Mus.A. and a
number of University scholarships and prizes.
Terence grew up in Tamworth, regional New South Wales, where he
completed all his classical piano grades, and gained his Associate of
Music (A.Mus.A.) aged fifteen. He worked as a computer technician
before moving to Newcastle to study music at the University
Conservatorium. Terence studied under Carmel Lutton OAM and,
after completing his classical training, chose to specialise in jazz and contemporary music, genres about
which he feels most passionate.
Stylistically, Terence’s piano style has been described as smooth and elegant, passionate but subtle,
continually striving for atmospheric colours, combining sensual harmonies with exciting swing grooves.
Recently, Terence’s wicked sense of humour has seeped into his playing, making for some highly
entertaining performances.
