To ensure that every child in Douglas County has a gift to open on Christmas Day, Douglasville First UMC, in coordination with Faith in Action, will host an exciting Christmas shopping experience in Patricia Tidwell Hall (B-Building). Your help is needed by praying for the event, serving during the event, donating toys or funds to purchase toys for children, infants to 18 years old. Please place donated toys in the bin located in B-Building office lobby or you may make a financial contribution by making your check payable to DFUMC (please write “OCDC” on the memo line). Opportunities to serve include helping with set-up on Friday night and/or serving during the event Saturday from 8:00am-12:00pm. Please register to serve online at https://douglasvillefumc.breezechms.com/form/OCDC2019 or contact Angel Douglas at [email protected].
Donate Christmas Wrapping Supplies As part of our Operation Christmas Douglas County event, we are asking folks to donate Christmas wrapping paper, bags, tissue paper, tape, bows, and adult scissors. Items donated may be dropped off in the Operation Christmas Douglas County bin located in Building B. Items are needed by Monday, December 9.
Blue Christmas, December 22 If you are feeling a little blue this holiday season, come and hear a message of hope. You are warmly invited to Blue Christmas, a time for worship and remembrance just for you. Whether you have experienced a loss or are just feeling down, please join us on Sunday, December 22 from 6:00-7:00pm in the sanctuary. During the service you will enjoy special music by harpist Angie Bemiss. We will celebrate Holy Communion and end the service candle lighting. 2020 Estimate of Giving
Cards Due As we grow in generosity, it deepens our relationship with God and allows us to participate more fully in God’s mission through the church. The church is asking that you prayer-fully consider your 2020 operating budget giving and turn in an “Estimate of Giving” pledge card soon. Cards can be placed in the offering plate on Sun-day or mailed to the church. Know that estimates can be adjusted at any point during the year by contacting the church office.
Consider an IRA
Distribution to the Church Anyone making a required minimum distribution from their IRA should consider a Qualified Charitable Distri-bution. An IRA account holder can have a distribution up to $100,000 made payable directly to a qualified charity. The amount donated to the charity in this manner is not included in the donor’s taxable income. Please consult with a knowledgeable tax or financial advisor regarding minimum distribution procedures. Church fi-nance contact: Helyn Mayhew at [email protected] or 770-942-3146.
Thank you for your generosity!

New Group Coming Soon:
Yin, Yang, You (Y3) Partnerships, friendships, relationships, engagement and marriage. They all seem different. In reality, they all require the same thing: the desire to make something greater as a unit than as individuals. Things can become stagnant. They can become ordinary and bland. There can seem to be little adventure or experience. They need not stay that way. Our ability to form a greater bond can come from understanding ourselves, each other, and how we each fit into the equation This group seeks to focus on the nuances of having a partner and being a partner.
Small groups are a way to experience biblical study on a more intimate, interesting, and interactive basis. What does the Word say about what each person needs? What are practical ways to address and resolve conflict? How can I get my partner to not just know what I need but understand why? These questions and more will be answered as we dive into an original study on what relational balance is and how it creates a more perfect union. Join Zaine Hedge and Inga Bailey starting the last week of January 2020. Be watching for the Signup.

By Robin Payne, Connections Director Our faith is not a stagnant endeavor. It is meant to be moving forward and growing at all times. That movement happens in all kinds of different groups because there are all kinds of ways we come to know Jesus and grow in our faith.
• Sunday School is a more traditional expression of growing our faith. It has Officer’s, meets nearly 52 weeks a year, meets at the church and meets at the same time each week. Teachers often vary and they excel at caring for members, fellowship and the ministry of presence.
• Bible Study Classes are another way of growing our faith. These generally start when a group comes together around a particular study. These are not long-term and size varies. They typically meet 6-12 weeks long.
• Small Groups are a more modern way of growing our faith. Small Groups meet in semesters – typically 3 per year. Small Groups meet in homes and that setting provides a unique opportunity to invite others who might not step foot in church. They are typically smaller in number with 8-12 in a group and they are heavy on application and discussion.
I don’t want you to feel that you must choose one of each. I know that you can feel pressured into joining one of each of these. That is NOT my intent. I know that every group is not right for you and what I want more than anything is for you to find the group that is right for you.
What I DO want is for you to be in a smaller group that is challenging your faith, giving you the opportunity to meet new people, teaching you new things, and is making you excited about your faith. I want you to ask yourself each January, some questions like:
• Is Jesus more real to me this year than last year? If the answer is no, then try changing up some of your studying and consider trying one of the three studies listed up above that you have not tried before.
• Is there something God wants to teach me that I keep putting off learning? If the answer is yes, then look around at what each of the groups above are studying and join the study that speaks to you.
God uses a variety of methods, a multitude of teachers and a whole host of people to continually teach us. THIS YEAR, in 2020, take inventory of your Spiritual life and then take responsibility for and be intentional about growing your faith.
Winter 2020 Bible Studies, Small Groups and a new short-term Sunday School class will begin in January. Be watching for which Small Group is right for you!

Running The Race,
Young Adult Retreat
January 24-26 Over and over in Scripture a life of faith is described with athletic metaphors like races and athletic contests. Each verse depicts the life of someone committed to strength and growing. The life of faith is not always easy, but it IS worth it. Paul, speaking to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:7b-8 said, "…Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Come away to the mountains of Hinton, North Carolina and learn about growing and strengthening your faith. Identify the race marked out for you and learn the keys to building a faith that works. The cost is $140 and there is a payment plan for four payments of $35 each so that the retreat doesn't break the bank. Cost includes materials, room and meals. If you are not a Young Adult but you know a Young Adult, pass this on to them and encourage them to clear their schedule to grow! For more information, contact Robin Payne at [email protected]. Register online at: https://douglasvillefumc.breezechms.com/form/6c9f1b
Scouting Bake Sale, December 8 Need a home baked gift for a teacher or neighbor? The girls of Troop 1228 have got you covered! Stop by Huffine Hall after worship. We will have cookies, fudge, and other treats available for purchase including gluten free items. All proceeds go toward the purchase of equipment for the troop.
Christmas Gifts for Burnett Kids We have 79 kids from 29 families in need of help for Christmas. Come by Huffine Hall during and after breakfast to adopt one or more kids. We also need $50 gift cards (Target or Walmart) for each family. If you’d rather donate money, please write “Burnett Angels” on the memo line of your check to the church. We need everything by Sunday, December 8.
Sanctuary Poinsettias On Sale Each Christmas, our Sanctuary is decorated with beautiful poinsettias that individuals purchase in honor or memory of a loved one. We are taking orders on Sundays (December 1 and 8) in Huffine Hall following both traditional services. The cost is $11 each. The Worship Committee asks that poinsettias be left in the Sanctuary until after the 7:00pm Christmas Eve service.
Tuesday Morning Prayer Group “It is written,” Jesus said to them, “My house will be called a house of prayer…” -Matthew 21:13. We know through scripture that God desires for believers to pray without ceasing and to be persistent in our prayers. You are invited to join your brothers and sisters in a time of prayer each Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30am in Pastor Tamlyn’s office. If you have never been involved in a prayer group before, you need not be concerned. We will provide the format and ease you in. Feel free to bring a friend. Contact: Rev. Tamlyn Collins at 770-871-1081 or [email protected].
Women's Conference:
The Real Fairy Tale Come spend the day with us on Saturday, January 18 from 9:30am-2:30pm as we hear from women who are walking testimonies of God’s RESCUE, REDEMPTION and RESTORATION. You will leave encouraged and your faith will grow. SO… Armor up, pick up your sword and leave the baggage aside. $20 cost includes lunch and all supplies. Bring your Sword (your Bible)! Bring your neighbor, your sister, your co-worker, your Sunday School Class. Register online at bit.ly/2KQ64cw
Confirmation Mentors Needed We just had our first meeting for the 2020 Confirmation Class, an informational meeting where we laid out the plan for the class of 2020. We discussed the schedule including a retreat to Camp Glisson that will building the bonds between our confirmands, a trip to the Jewish Temple in Atlanta, and worshipping alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ at Golden Memorial UMC. It is a very exciting time and we need your help. Paul is on the hunt for mentors for each of our students: adults who will walk alongside these young Christians and help guide and develop their understanding of their faith. Please, when they ask you to be a part of these confirmands’ journey, take a second, pray about it, and say yes! You will change the lives of our young students for the better.
Discipleship Coaching Jesus desires for each of us to engage in, participate in and cooperate with the process of growing spiritually. Wondering what your first or next step toward Christ is? Please contact Robin Payne at [email protected] to schedule a one-on-one session of personalized coaching.
