    It can affect anyone. Three times as common in women as in

    men.

    The most common age for it to develop isin the early twenties to mid-forties.

    In children the most common age for it to

    develop is 13-15 years.

    Fatigue

    An uncomfortable sensation in the muscle, even pain andcramping

    Neuro-cognitive

    Disrupted sleep

    Pain or aches in the muscles, joints or head

    A drop in blood pressure, feeling dizzy or pale

    Palpitations, increased heart rate or shortness of breath withexertion or on standing

    Marked weight changeextreme loss or gain

    Inability to continue low-intensity physical activity

    Mild cases

    Can care for yourself Can do light domestic tasks, but with difficulty.

    Are still likely to be able to do a job, but may often take days offwork.

    In order to remain in work you are likely to have stopped most

    leisure and social activities. Weekends or other days off from work are used to rest in order to

    cope.

    Moderate cases

    Reduced mobility and are restricted in most activities of daily living. The level of ability and severity of symptoms often varies from time to

    time (peaks and troughs).

    Are likely to have stopped work and require rest periods.

    Night-time sleep tends to be poor and disturbed.

    Severe cases

    Are able to carry out only minimal daily tasks such as facewashing and cleaning teeth.

    Are likely to have severe difficulties with some mentalprocesses such as concentrating.

    May be wheelchair-dependent for mobility and may be

    unable to leave your home except on rare occasions, andusually have severe prolonged after-effects from effort.

    May spend most of your time in bed.

    Often unable to tolerate any noise, and are generally verysensitive to bright light.
