Chapter 1Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The development of the computer technology and network communication technology
makes it possible for human society to enter a world of information. But nowadays,
most of the computer laboratory is still in the primitive stage of manual management.
This not only is extremely inconsistent with the development of computer science, but
also wastes much of manpower and material resources, so it has been an emergent
question for computer laboratory management to develop a Computer Laboratory
Management System and use it replacing primary manual management.
Diliman Computer Technology Institute (DCTI) is a private, non-sectarian tertiary
educational institution. Situated along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, DCTI
offers courses such as Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of
Science in Elementary Education, Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.
DCTI ensure that the students are well instructed not only by lecture but also in
laboratory activity that is why computer laboratory of school should always be in good
condition.
Maintaining computer laboratory requires man power and attention of the computer

administrator that is why the administrator cannot fully monitor the laboratory which
leads to computer problem such as computer viruses, improper shutdown, unnecessary
browsing of internet which is not relevant for learning, and malfunctioning of computer
peripherals.
The researchers intended to create a computer laboratory management system that will
help the administrator in maintaining the laboratory. The system is designed to do
variety of command such as turning off client computers from server workstation,
monitor the website that the students browse, send and received message from server
to client in order to quickly assist student requests and concerns.
1.2 Statement of the problem
The following statements are the problems in creating an Automated Computer Laboratory Management System for Diliman Computer Technology Institute
What data structure must be incorporated in the program to prevent laboratory computer from malfunction due to virus infection?

1.3 Significance of the Study
The Researchers intended to create a Automated Computer Laboratory Management
System for Diliman Computer Technology Institute to help the school in maintaining the
computer laboratory. The Student will be the top beneficial of this monitoring system.
They have the right to comment, suggest, and report any changes or problems they
would similar to acquire. This system will manage the student desire for them to
continuously focus in their work without encountering any problem and as the result of
this research the student can work in the computer laboratory more efficiently,
professors can teach more effectively, and administrator can quickly monitor the usage
of computers in the laboratory and determine a problem right away if there is a
tendency of failures in the network. In Addition, the importance of this system is
increment need to such system in organizations, Computer Laboratory Monitoring
System is important to manage and monitor the hardware parts of the computer in
laboratory. Developing this system will provide improved and accuracy in monitoring,
and reducing the time and efforts and future researchers will benefit who wish to have
similar studies as they can get background information from the result of this study
which will serve as a prototype to modify their research and for other improvements.

1.4 Scope and Limitations
The researchers used Visual Basic 2008 for creating the system and Microsoft Access for
handling the database. The system has two parts; the Administrator and client, the
Administrator can monitor the usage of computer in the computer laboratory. The
administrator can access all command in manipulating the computers in the lab e.g
shutdown, lock, restart, send message, and viewing of message of the client. The
administrator can also verify how long does a client is using the system unit, he can also
check what is the schedule of the students registered in his database in the event that
the student login not during his schedule the student cannot access his account to login,
the admin can also restrict websites that is unnecessary, the student can send message
to the administrator if ever they have request and concerns in the laboratory, in the
event that the student failed to give the correct username or password five times the
system unit will automatically shutdown to ensure that the student is using their
account the student can change their password from time to time to avoid possible
hacking or leakage of password and in the event that a student forget its password the
student should ask the administrator to reset his password.
In this study, the researchers limit the system within a specific workgroup. The client can
only access computer by giving their student number and password. Sending of message
is limited only within the specified workgroup. The administrator would not be able to
determine if the system unit is properly or in properly shutdown by the client. The

Literature Review
2.1 Review of Related Literature
Computer Lab Management Software
Whether the students using the computer are young or old, access to these lab
management features is extremely helpful. As many staff development presenters
know, it can be even more difficult to teach technology skills to adults (in particular
teachers) than to young people. When an instructor wants to limit off task behavior
(similar surfing websites unrelated to the presented lesson), encourage time on task, or
present oral instructions to students, these software tools are wonderful additions to a
technology-infused learning environment. Some management programs offer additional
features with wonderful instructional benefits for classroom teachers and students.
Transfer a file to all student computers: If a school file server is available and a "shared
folder" has been created allowing student as well as teacher access, files for a particular
lesson can be opened from the network. Some lab management programs allow for the
distribution of files directly to the hard drive of every computer in the lab, however, and
some can even retrieve modified and saved files from the student computers to the
instructor computer at the end of class.
Chat: While some teachers may think this feature is superfluous and unneeded, chat
capability included with lab management software can be invaluable for a variety of

reasons. First, most students love to chat on their computers: typing text messages to
each other similar they would in an online chat room. A major difference between an
online chatroom and a chat environment provided by a lab management software
program is that the participants are controlled: only those students physically in the
room can participate in the chat. As a reward for staying on task or completing a lesson,
students can be given five minutes of chat time at the end of the period. Students
desperately need guidance and instruction on what is appropriate and safe to disclose in
an online chat environment, so in addition to motivating students, chat sessions can also
provide them with invaluable digital safety skills. [3]
Computer Laboratory Management Software System.
"Computer lab management software" refers to programs used by Administrator in the
school to maintain the student attention. Screen sharing is a typical feature of lab
management software, allowing the teacher's computer screen or another student's
screen to be shared with every other computer in the lab. Effective use of computer lab
management software can make a tremendous, positive difference when teachers use a
computer lab for instruction.
Software Features
Automated Computer Laboratory Management System for Diliman Computer Technology Institute | Panaguiton & Villanueva 8
DILIMAN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman Quezon City
Using lab management software to present a technology-infused lesson can completely
change the way a teacher presents content and teaches skills. Instead of straining their
eyes to see small details on the screen at the front of the room, students can look at
their own monitor in front of them and comfortably see the teacher's demonstration.
When it is time to get everyone's attention, the teacher can "blank" student screens
(make them all black), thereby preventing them from continuing their work. While some
lab management software programs offer more advanced features, the following are
the basic features that all should include
1. ScreenSharing:
Making all computer screens in the room show the same image, usually the
instructor's screen. Many management programs allow sharing of other screens
as well, so if a student has created something the instructor wants to show
everyone, this can be accomplished quickly. When screen sharing is disabled, all
student computers return to their previous screens.
2. Blank Student Screens:
This is invaluable for getting student attention and providing class instructions. The
blank screens command causes all computers in the room except the instructor's to
turn black (or another color) and sometimes display a message. Some programs
offer the option of displaying a custom image. While screens are blanked, students
cannot see anything on their own screen or continue to work.
3. Remote Control:
Automated Computer Laboratory Management System for Diliman Computer Technology Institute | Panaguiton & Villanueva 9
DILIMAN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman Quezon City
Depending on the instructional setting, this feature may have more "gee whiz" value
than practical use, but many programs allow instructors to take remote control of a
student's computer to demonstrate a task. This feature may be more helpful to
technical support staff who need to make configuration changes or even
installations on remote computers than to classroom teachers.
4. Unique Room Codes:
Lab management programs, when initially setup on "client" (student) and instructor
computers, permit a unique name or number to be assigned for the classroom
where the computers are located. This way, instructors can choose to control only
the computers physically located in the same classroom. Multiple computer labs or
classrooms in the same building can use the same lab management software for
computer control with different room codes and not interfere with each other.
Access to these lab management features is extremely helpful, whether the
students using the computer are young or old. In fact, as many staff development
presenters know, it can be even more difficult to teach technology skills to adults
than to young people. When an instructor wants to limit off task behavior (similar
surfing websites unrelated to the presented lesson), encourage time on task, or
present oral instructions to students, these software tools are wonderful additions
to a technology-infused learning environment. Windows XP Professional and some
other Windows-based operating systems include an optional feature, Remote
Desktop Services, which allows for remote control of desktop computers. These
remote control features can have instructional applications, but do not permit the
same class-wide screen sharing and other capabilities of the lab management
software options discussed in this article.
Advanced Features

DILIMAN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman Quezon City
Some management programs offer additional features with wonderful instructional benefits
for classroom teachers and students.
1. Shut down or restart computers:
It can be time consuming at the end of the day to shut down all the computers in a
lab or classroom, or to restart them before the next class. Some programs offer the
ability to shut down or restart an entire lab simultaneously with a few mouse clicks
on the instructor computer. Installed Network Interface Cards (NICs) in each
computer must support this feature for it to work.
2. Transfer a file to all student computers:
If a school file server is available and a "shared folder" has been created allowing
student as well as teacher access, files for a particular lesson can be opened from
the network. Some lab management programs allow for the distribution of files
directly to the hard drive of every computer in the lab, however, and some can even
retrieve modified and saved files from the student computers to the instructor
computer at the end of class.
3. Chat:
While some teachers may think this feature is superfluous and unneeded, chat
capability included with lab management software can be invaluable for a variety of
reasons. First, most students love to chat on their computers: typing text messages
to each other as they would in an online chat room. A major difference between an
online chatroom and a chat environment provided by a lab management software
program is that the participants are controlled: only those students physically in the

room can participate in the chat. As a reward for staying on task or completing a

Students desperately need guidance and instruction on what is appropriate and safe
to disclose in an online chat environment, so in addition to motivating students, chat
sessions can also provide them with invaluable digital safety skills. [2]
System Utilities LAN Administration System
System Utilities LAN Administration System - the software for remote administration of
local area networks. It is designed for network administrators working with groups of
systems. This product allows you to copy files and folders, delete files and folders, run
executable files, install software silently, create, delete and change user accounts,
change display settings, create and delete shared network folders, shutdown and reset
computers in your network. The system consists of administration module and client
software. It is recommended to install administration module only on system
administratorls computer. Note: the client software must be installed on all
workstations! There is no additional user rights required to execute administration
module. Administrator rights are required only for product installation. Since client
software installed as a Windows NT service, there is no need to be logged as an
administrator when working with administration module. Other advantage is that there is

no need to log on every computer, as system services executed in the security context
of the Local System account. [4]
Real VNC
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is a remote control software which allows
you to view and interact with one computer (the "server") using a simple program (the
"viewer") on another computer anywhere on the Internet. The two computers do not
even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view an office Linux
machine on your Windows PC at home. VNC is freely and publicly available and is in
widespread active use by millions throughout industry, academia and privately [9].
Computer Laboratory Monitoring
According to Ramos, Pallingayan and Padilla the development of technology has
changed the way we live. Computer became famous and considered as the part of the
society today; they are everywhere. And the advancement in discoveries, both in
hardware and software keep coming, day in and day out. It changes and improves at a
rapid speed, companies and institutions have deal with it. This is because the latest
knowledge of development in computer technology grows people’s standard.
In our life today, computer is one of the many inventions that greatly affected our way
of living. In fact, it is regarded as an essential tool in many areas including business,
industry, government, sciences, education, school, home, and in almost any
organization and establishment that exists. It can perform operation and process data
rapidly, accurately and reliably and by using these machines, spending a lot of time and
effort in doing certain task is minimized.

Nowadays, industry is experiencing many technological advancement and changes in
methods of learning. With the rise of globalization, it is becoming essential to find an
easier and more effective system to help an organization or company. In spite of this
matter, there are still business establishments and schools that use the old-fashioned
way.
Computer as part of the innovation in technology manifests bigger changes in world,
economies, banks and other manufacturing centers flourished due to the catching
power of computers in the field of education, not all school can afford to have number
of computer that caused some problem in maintaining the hardware parts.
In a certain way, one thing that is still in manual process is the monitoring of each of the
computer in the computer laboratory. This is one of the problems of the MIS. Dealing
with this matter, the proponents thought of an easiest way to monitor the hardware
parts of the computer in laboratory.
In the Manual monitoring, the student must be signing in the Lab monitoring paper
where the students write their comments whether the computer is working or not
working. The OJT students’ and the MIS members is the one who can monitor and repair
the Laboratory Computers.
Therefore, the researchers realized that some of the manual processes should be
computerized, in form of monitoring system .The present system is focusing in
managing the computer laboratories by defining allocation to different users,
monitoring usage of lab resources and the hardware parts of the computer. The system
also provides efficient reports. [8]

3.3 Research Method
The proponents used System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) in developing the system.
SDLC is a conceptual model used in project management that describes the stages
involved in an information system development project, from an initial feasibility study
through maintenance of the completed application.
The proponents used a survey form in order to evaluate the system in terms of
Functionality, Reliability, Usability, Efficiency, Maintainability and Portability. The
survey is randomly selected per year level of the student of Diliman Computer
Technology Institute in order to verify the output per course and year.
System Planning
The Proponents observe and evaluate the current procedure of the computer
laboratory in order to analyze what are the process to be improve and if the
computer laboratory can provide all the necessary service that a student
needed.
The observation and evaluation was done by interviewing some students who
usually uses the computer laboratory and consulting the professors who uses the
computer laboratory for their subject

In developing the Computer Laboratory Management System, the proponents
research on the current process of the computer laboratory the proponents
observed that most of the students who uses to computer laboratory forgot to
shutdown their work station after using in addition students concerns and
request cannot accommodate right away because they cannot ask assistance
directly to the administrator or I.T staff.
System Design
The developers used Visual Basic 2008 an object-oriented computer
programming language for designing the system and Microsoft Office Access a
relational Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and
software-development tools which is compatible to windows base platform.
System Implementation
System implementation covers a dynamic variety of activities from a detailed
workflow analysis to the actual operation of the computer laboratory of the
proposed system. During system implementation, the student will test the
system to log-in, after logging in the administrator will monitor the activity of the
student in terms of usage of the computers.
The system will also verify the website that a student browsing, if the system can
block website which is not necessary for learning, and if the system can

shutdown, lock, and restart workstations in the laboratory.
System Support and Security
The proponents shall maintain the functionality of the software and security
issues in storing all the information of the propose system. Once the new system
is implemented, the student must evaluate it. Maintenance must be kept up
from time to time. Administrator of the system should also be kept up to date
concerning the latest modifications and procedures made by the programmer.
Operational and testing procedure
The following are the things to consider before installing the system
The software should meet the system requirement of the software.
Workstation that can be used by the user.
Router or Switch used to connect computer.
After ensuring the requirements, the client is ready to install and evaluate the
system. During testing of the system log in screen will appear and the student
should enter their user name. The server needs to create an account. The
administrator can add, update, delete and search an account of the clients.
Evaluation Criteria
The evaluation instrument used for the testing the system's acceptability was

adopted from the ISO 9126-1. The ISO 9126 software quality model identifies six
main quality characteristics namely Functionality, Reliability, Usability, Efficiency,
Maintainability, Portability. The questionnaire was a five point's scale where 5 is
the highest rating with the qualitative description of the "Excellent" and 1 is the
lowest rating with a qualitative description of "Poor". Comments and suggestion
were included in order to find more improvement for the proposed system.
Table 1 show the mean average rating for the project while Table 2 show ranges
of the mean rating and their corresponding qualitative interpretation. The Mean
average rating for the project.
Evaluation Procedure
The system was evaluated by 30 respondents who were composed of student from
different courses and year level and they were randomly selected The system will
undergo several survey for the year in order to determine to result of the new
system.
During the evaluation process, the following steps were undertaken:
The purpose of the survey will explain
The system will demonstrate to the respondents the computer laboratory management system in terms of Functionality, Reliability and Efficiency the proponents shall adopt Fishers exact test if there is significant improvement in the system.

Fisher's exact test is a statistical test used to determine if there are non-random
associations between two categorical variables.
Let there exist two such variables and , with and observed states, respectively. Now
form an matrix in which the entries represent the number of observations in
which , . Calculate the row and column sums and , respectively, and the total
sum of the matrix. Then calculate the conditional probability of getting the actual matrix
given the particular row and column sums, given by which is a multivariate generalization of
the hyper geometric probability function
(Equation 1)
Now find all possible matrices of non-negative integers consistent with the row and column
sums and . For each one, calculate the associated conditional probability using (2),
where the sum of these probabilities must be 1.
(Equation 2)
To compute the P-value of the test, the tables must then be ordered by
some criterion that measures dependence, and those tables that represent equal or greater
deviation from independence than the observed table are the ones whose probabilities are
added together. There are a variety of criteria that can be used to measure dependence. In
the case, which is the one Fisher looked at when he developed the exact test, either
the Pearson chi-square or the difference in proportions (which are equivalent) is typically
used. Other measures of association, such as the similar lihood-ratio-test, -squared, or any
of the other measures typically used for association in contingency tables, can also be used.
Automated Computer Laboratory Management System for Diliman Computer Technology Institute | Panaguiton & Villanueva 24
DILIMAN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman Quezon City
The test is most commonly applied to matrices, and is computationally unwieldy for
large or . For tables larger than , the difference in proportion can no longer be used,
but the other measures mentioned above remain applicable (and in practice, the Pearson
statistic is most often used to order the tables). In the case of the matrix, the P-value of
the test can be simply computed by the sum of all -values which are .
For an example application of the test, let be a journal, say either Mathematics
Magazine or Science, and let be the number of articles on the topics of mathematics and
biology appearing in a given issue of one of these journals. If Mathematics Magazine has
five articles on math and one on biology, and Science has none on math and four on biology,
then the relevant matrix would be
McNemar’s test will also be applied in order to analyze the computers which is
working and non working before and after the implementation of the system
McNemar's test assess the significance of the difference between two correlated
proportions, such as might be found in the case where the two proportions are
based on the same sample of subjects or on matched-pair samples.
Although the McNemar test bears a superficial resemblance to a test of categorical
association, as might be performed by a 2x2 chi-square test or a 2x2 Fisher exact
probability test, it is doing something quite different. The test of association
examines the relationship that exists among the cells of the table, as marked in the
adjacent General Structure by a, b, c, and d. The McNemar test examines the
difference between the proportions that derive from the marginal sums of the table:
pA=(a+b)/N and pB=(a+c)/N. The question in the McNemar test is: do these two

DILIMAN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE Commonwealth Avenue, Diliman Quezon City
proportions, pA and pB, significantly differ? And the answer it receives must take
into account the fact that the two proportions are not independent. The correlation
of pA and pB is occasioned by the fact that both include the quantity a in the upper
left cell of the table.
The core insight of McNemar's test is two-fold: first, that the difference between pA
and pB reduces, both algebraically and conceptually, to the difference between b
and c in the blue-tinted diagonal cells of the table; and second, that b and c belong
to a binomial distribution defined by n=b+c; p=0.5; and q=0.5

In order to test if the treatment is helpful, we use only the number discordant pairs
of twins, b and c, since the other pairs of twins tell us nothing about whether the
treatment is helpful or not. McNemar's test is

which for large samples is distributed similar a chi-squared distribution with 1
degree of freedom. A closer approximation to the chi-squared distributin uses a
continuity correction
(Equation 5)
In R this test is given by the function Mc Nemar test. Case control data may be
analyzed this way as well. Suppose you have a set of people with some rare disease
(e.g., a certain type of cancer); these are called the cases. For this design you match
each case with a contol who is as similar as feasible on all important covariates
except the exposure of interest. Here is a table:

from the database of the registrar’s office.
Mr. Glen Mercines said there should be a feature where aside from the database that
will save login of the students it should be also send via email of the I.T staff in order for
the I.T staff to monitor the login of the student even if his not around.
Analliza B. Ramos said that the system should determine specifically the website visited
of the student and all application that the students open to fully monitor the activity of
students in computer laboratory.
Jocelyn Fajardo said that the proponents should limit the system where it cannot save
logout of the student if there are cases of improper shutdown, power interruption,
negligence to logout.
