    +ehearsal %)pectations

    4. Singers are e(ected to treat the conductor*teacher and each other with utmost resect. Singing is avery ersonal and often a very vulnerable activity.

    5. 2ach singer should be in his or her chair or on the risers reared to begin rehearsal on time. 6eing

late causes you to miss a ortion of warm1us, limiting your ability to get the most out ofrehearsal. 7ehearsal is not over when the singer thin%s it is, but rather when the conductor says itis over.

    8. /urn off 9noisema%ers: ;watches, cell hones, etc.< before rehearsal begins.=. >ee tal%ing to a minimum.?. Have your folder with music and a encil in hand during every rehearsal. encil in a boo% bag

    Tardies

#hen students are tardy, they disrut the class and interrut the learning rocess. Classes*rehearsals arescheduled at a secific time and it is e(ected that students be unctual. Students are to be consideredtardy if they are not hysically resent in their assigned classroom and seat at the time the tardy bell rings.Students will lose fifteen ;4?< articiation oints each time they are tardy to class. /ardies will result in a

lower citi!enshi grade. 2(cessive tardies or tardiness on the day of a erformance may result in alternatestatus*or forfeiture of the erformance, based on the decision made by the director. /his decision will bebased on attitude, disciline and attendance. Mr. 3leischer follows the Coronado High School tardyolicy.

    #tudent $radin and %valuation

Choir seldom re-uires 9traditional: homewor% or written assignments as in other classes+ however, youare resonsible for practicing your music at least " minutes each evening. Your wor% in class is done

by articiating and being a resonsible member of your ensemble. Jrade evaluation in the CHS Choirsis determined on many more levels than 'ust music1singing ability. 2ach day, every student ma%es achoice about how he*she will conduct himself*herself and how he*she will behave during theclass*rehearsal or erformance. #he student must accept the conse$uences of his/her choices andbehavior./he suerior choral music student will demonstrate)

    ;aniel Mooney, 7ew 6or&

    Music is a science

4t is e*act, specific3 and it demands e*act acoustics. A conductorLs full score is a chart, a graph

which indicates fre$uencies, intensities, volume change, melody, and harmony all at once and with

the most e*act control of time.

    Music is mathematical

4t is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions which must be done

instantaneously, not wor&ed out on paper.

    Music is a foreign language

Most of the terms are in 4talian, >erman or 8rench3 and the notation is certainly not :nglish ' but a

highly developed &ind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. #he semantics of music is

the most complete and universal language.

    Music is history

Music usually reflects the environment and times of its creation, often even the country and/orracial feeling.

    Music is physical education

4t re$uires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lips, chee&s, and facial muscles, in

addition to e*traordinary control of the diaphragmatic, bac&, stomach, and chest muscles, which

respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.

Music is all these things, but most of all,

    Music is art

4t allows a human being to ta&e all these dry, technically boring but difficult@ techni$ues and use

them to create emotion. #hat is one thing science cannot duplicate! humanism, feeling, emotion, call it what you will.

    Music is taught in schools

not because you are e*pected to major in music

not because you are e*pected to play or sing all your life

    not so you can rela*

not so you can have fun

?ut1 so you will be humanso you will recogni)e beauty

    so you will be sensitive

so you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world

so you will have something to cling to

so you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good D

    in short, more life

f what value will it be to ma&e a prosperous living unless you &now how to liveO

#hat is why music is taught.
