Chattahoochee High School Drama has been incredibly active this year. They began the year with the annual collabo-ration with Dad’s Garage, an Atlanta improvisational theatre. This was the fourth year that Dad’s sent an artist weekly to work with CHS im-provisers. CHS’ im-prov team placed first at the Dad’s High School Tournament. county. Aside from all the awards, accolades and recognition, the Hooch Band prides itself on the ability to perform music in an artistic and aesthetic manner, which is by far the most important aspect in music education and perform-

ance.

The Chattahoochee orchestra program is presenting five con-

certs this season, two of which offer small groups performing

chamber music. On the Holiday concert in December the

Symphony Orchestra joined forces with the entire Choral De-

partment to present Mark Hayes’ Gloria In Excelsis Deo! In

February, the String Orchestra received superior ratings from

all 3 judges at the annual Large Group Performance Evaluation

in Roswell. March 18 and 19 will mark a collaborative cham-

ber music presentation by orchestra students with the chorus

and band departments. And on April 29, all four orchestra

classes will offer the final concert of the school year. This will

be Mr. Lawless’ final concert before retiring after serving five years as orchestra teacher at Chattahoochee.

Drum Roll please ..... Congratulations to this year’s “TEACHER OF THE

YEAR”, BLAKE STETSON and “PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR”, LIZ

MARINELLI. Mr. Stetson has been a member of the World Language Depart-

ment since 2006 and teaches Spanish. He became the World Languages Depart-

ment Chair in 2011. Ms. Marinelli joined Chattahoochee in 2002, first as a Para-

professional in the Science and Math Departments, and then taking over as the

CHS Bookkeeper in 2004. Both Mr. Stetson and Ms. Marinelli were recognized

by their peers as outstanding members of our faculty and staff and are very de-

serving of this prestigious honor.

March is always a busy month at Chattahoochee. Be sure to mark your calendars now and make plans to

attend one of the performances of “Grease” with performances on March 6th - 8th at 7:00 pm. There will

be a matinee on Sunday, March 9th at 3:00 p.m. Our Spring sports are now in full swing. I encourage

everyone to come out and support your Hooch Cougars at one of the many events taking place during the

month of March, whether it be for Academics, the Arts or Athletics.

At its Thursday, February 20 meeting, the Fulton County School Board approved a plan for making up

the instructional time missed due to recent inclement weather days. March 14th is now an instructional

day for students instead of a teacher workday. School will be in session as usual. We are aware that par-

ents have expressed concern regarding testing. District leaders are exploring ways for schools to provide

students with additional academic support after school, and digital resources aligned to the curriculum are

also being developed for students. Updates will be provided to parents as plans are finalized. Spring

break remains unchanged and is scheduled for April 7th -11th. High school graduation dates are not im-

pacted and the last day of school will be May 23.

SPRING will be a busy time for testing with End Of Course Tests starting on April 28th. AP Tests begin on May 5th and will run through May 16th. Final Exams are scheduled for May 21st – 23rd. I must urge all parents to be cautious when scheduling your vacations. Check your student’s exam schedule and plan accordingly. The school cannot be very flexible with exams and a zero on a final could be disastrous to your child. During the springtime, the students will need your motivation more than ever to help them

stay focused as the school year comes to an end.

Before we know it, Graduation will be here for the Class of 2014. Graduation will be held at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church again this year and will take place on Saturday, May 24th at 10:00 a.m. Be sure to check the “Senior Graduation Information” link on the website at www.chattcougar.com for all the lat-est news and info regarding this year’s graduation, as well as all upcoming concerts, events and complete

sport schedules.

Once again, I thank you for all your continued support. As we continue to build upon our Tradition of Ex-

cellence, let’s remember that by working together the possibilities are endless.

Sincerely,

Tim C. Duncan

The CHS PTSA is looking forward to the pro-

grams and events that we have planned for the re-

mainder of the school year. We will host the

spring Honor Roll luncheon on March 26, cele-

brate our diverse community during International

Night on March 13, and will honor academic

achievement at the PTSA sponsored CHS Honors Night on April 22. We will continue working with

school staff and community partners to prepare our seniors for life after school through seminars that will

focus on understanding good nutrition and the law. The freshman and sophomore classes can look forward

to separate targeted entertaining events. We are also working with Mr. Duncan to expand the entertain-

ment at the annual Springfest. We will need a lot of volunteers to help with all of these events. Volunteer

solicitations will be posted through SignUpGenius. Please visit the PTSA website to find the SignUpGen-

ius link and to lend your support.

Monday, March 3 2014 is Day 30 for the Georgia Legislature. This is a critical day for proposed bills as

any legislation that hasn't passed its originating chamber by the end of business is dead for the session.

There are a number of education bills moving through both the House and the Senate.

HB 875- "The Gun Bill" - This bill would allow school systems to have armed teachers and administrators

in their buildings as long as the system employee has a concealed carry permit.

SB 167 - "Restore Educational Authority to Georgia Citizens and Ensure Student Right to Privacy" - If

passed, Content Advisory Councils would be established to review standards and they would have com-

plete authority to define assessment tools and standards. The Department of Education would also be re-

quired to report all grants applied for and received to the legislature.

You can learn more about these bills and other bills being debated by our state legislatures by subscribing

to the Georgia PTA Capitol Watch at http://www.georgiapta.org/capitol-watch/. Thank you for your con-

tinued support of the CHS PTSA, and to helping to provide a voice for our children. Your membership

counts!

While hundreds of Chattahoochee’s high schoolers

attended class to recover from the impromptu five-

day weekend, nine of its stu-

dents spent Tuesday morning at

the Georgia State Capital. At-

tending the annual PTSA Stu-

dent Advocacy Day, the group

sat in on a presentation that in-

volved several distinguished

speakers and representatives of

the local and state PTSA boards.

After the bulk of the presentations, three of Chatta-

hoochee’s students presented a topic of their own.

Choosing to speak about Senate Bill 160, the three

girls (Sunidhi Ramesh, 12; Seri Lee, 11; Kate

Hamacher; 10) spoke out against the recent bill,

stating that its implementation has caused various

problems to clubs and teams on campus as well as

numerous groups statewide.

After the conference, the students attended a lunch-

eon hosted by state representative Lynne Riley. The

students spoke with Ms. Riley

about concerns that have come

up during the school year and

the activities to which they dedi-

cate their time. Through this ex-

perience, the students were able

to learn about the government

process directly from an elected

official. They exchanged ques-

tions and information, and left the luncheon feeling

more empowered than they had earlier that morning.

Overall, the experience at the Capital was fruitful

and informative. The students in attendance are

planning on getting more involved with the Chatta-

hoochee PTSA by contributing their time to improv-

ing the school environment throughout the remain-

der of the school year.

2014 PTSA Student Advocacy Day Sunidhi Ramesh, Student Representative CHS PTSA Board

Mr. Duncan and the Chattahoochee PTSA would like to congratulate the students who achieved Honor Roll

status for the Fall Semester of 2013. This past semester there were 784 students who made Honor Roll. In

order to qualify for the Honor Roll a student must have had an average of 90% or higher for

the Fall 2013 grading period.

The Honor Roll Recognition Program lunch will be held on Thursday, March 26th 2014.

Students who have made the Honor Roll will receive their invitations from their 2nd period

teachers the week of March 17th 2014. Students will need to bring their invite, student ID and/or school

planner in order to gain admittance to the luncheon. If you do not receive an invite and feel that you are eligi-

ble for the honor roll please, email. Mrs. Lynda Smith @ [email protected]

Scholastic Awards Felice Margol, Fine Arts Coordinator

There were 1,341 total pieces selected from the state of Georgia for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Fulton county students received 66 Gold Keys, 17 of those Gold Keys went to CHS stu-dents, 108 Silver Keys, 25 of those Silver Keys went to CHS students, 137 Honorable Mentions 30 of those Honorable Mentions went to CHS, and

1 American Visions Nominee is from

CHS.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen

King, John Updike, and many more.

Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 vis-ual and literary-arts organizations across the country to bring The Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Submissions are juried by lumi-naries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best

exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence

of a personal voice or vision.

In the last five years alone, students submitted nearly

900,000 original works of art and writing. During

that period, more than 60 top arts institutes and col-leges have partnered with the Awards to make $40 million in scholarships and financial aid available to regional and

national Scholastic Award winners.

More than $250,000 is given annually through the Scholastic Awards program in awards and scholarships to top winners and their educators. In addi-tion, more than $8 million in scholarships is set aside each year by our partners for recipients of the Scholastic

Art & Writing Awards.

Regional Gold Key winners will be judged at the national level. Seniors earning National Medals are eligible to re-ceive scholarships through partnerships with esteemed

colleges and universities.

The Georgia Art Region competition is sponsored and administrated by the Savannah College of Art and Design. A private, nonprofit, accredited university, SCAD is uniquely qualified to prepare talented students for profes-sional, creative careers. All Gold Key recipients, their parents/guardians, and their teachers will be invited to an

awards ceremony.

The musical theater department at Chattahoochee

High School is pleased to present the timeless com-

ing of age classic, “Grease” this March. A cast of

more than 40 has been hard at work preparing to

wow audiences with hit songs from the 1978 movie

that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

The play, set in the 1950s, weaves the love story of

an unlikely couple, bad boy Danny Zuko, and good

girl Sandy Dumbrowski, who find themselves at-

tending the same high school after having a summer

love affair at the beach. The Hooch cast, led by Ian

Prost as Danny and Paula Ruiz as Sandy, brings this

bubblegum musical to life in a way that will have

people dancing in the aisles.

Fans of the movie will remember the Thunderbirds

and Pink Ladies, the nerds and the cheerleaders, and

especially the music. Hits like “Summer Nights,”

“You’re the One that I Want” and “Hopelessly De-

voted to You” made the Billboard Top 10 when the

cast’s parents were in high school. Said the mom of

one actor, “When I was in high school, Grease was

one of my favorite movies. I never could have imag-

ined someday watching my child perform it. I still

remember the words to all the songs!”

The show will be big on many levels. “We have an

exceptional cast performing an amazing script, but

we’re equally excited about our talented musicians,

technicians and set designers. There will definitely

be unexpected surprises for our audience!” said Di-

rector Jennie Blevins. “This show will sell out, it’s

one of those shows that is great for families, for date

night, and for empty-nesters who remember the

movie. We’re just so excited to be able to perform it

at Chattahoochee.”

The show runs from March 6 – 9. Tickets can be pur-

chased from any cast member, reserved in advance

or purchased at the door, $12 students and $15

adults. For more information and advance ticket pur-

chase, e-mail [email protected].

Three Chattahoochee High School Architect stu-

dents earned a monetary prize and a place in the

next house plan book being published by Atlanta

Plan Source. Winners were Michael Ditto, 1st place

$100 Apple store gift card; Lucas Ferreira, 2nd

place, $50; and Arianne Perez, 3rd place, $25.

The students are in their second year of Mr. Gregg

Mervich’s Architecture class at Chattahoochee. This

past fall the students learned all the aspects of de-

signing a home including each room and space

needed in a new home design. The students then

tackled their own custom design of a four bedroom

2.5 bath two story home. The parameters of the de-

sign were set by Mr. Jim Wells who is the owner of

Atlanta Plan Source. Mr. Wells has been judging the

final designs and determining winners for the past

four years. “I am constantly amazed at the level of

creativity and talent these high school students dis-

play.

It is always a challenge to determine the winners

because all the designs are so good.” Mr. Wells’

plan books are sold at home stores all around the

nation. One of his house plans has been the highest

selling plan in the U.S. for numerous years.

The architecture students took their design ideas

from bubble sketches to line sketches and then used

Autodesk’s premier building design software, Revit,

to draw their house plans. The software allows stu

dents to do exterior and interior 3D renderings of

their plans as well as floor plans. The final set of

plans included a foundation plan and electrical plan

as well.

“It is fun to watch the students develop their skills

during the four years they can take the Architecture

class here at Chattahoochee High School,” says in-

structor Mervich. The upper level architecture stu-

dents are now working on designing an observation

tower for downtown Atlanta as a part of the Ameri-

can Institute of Architects Atlanta chapter high

school design contest.

Chattahoochee hosted the 6A State Wrestling Cham-

pionship the weekend of February 22nd, which in-

cluded 224 wrestlers, 200 coaches, numerous GHSA

officials, referees, medical staff and well over 2,000

guests. Pulling this off was no small task. Hooch

Wrestling wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone

at Chattahoochee High School that helped them.

They received support from Basketball, Lacrosse,

Band Booster (concessions), alumni, Jr Cougars,

Coaches, faculty, over 100 volunteers and many oth-

ers who just showed up to help. Being able to pull

together a great event like this is what makes Chatta-

hoochee such a great school. The feedback from

other coaches, parents, wrestling programs and

GHSA was very positive. One quote from a parent

on the GNWA Wrestling Forum page said “forget

the Arena; let Chattahoochee host the state tourna-

ment from now on.” It was an awesome event and a

true group effort….Thanks again to everyone!

Hooch had a record 8 wrestlers qualify for State this

year…Freshman Ethan Phillips, Sophomore Matt

Picus, Juniors Perry Benton, Sean Hoffman and

Jordan Pitt, and Seniors Brady Miller, Rowdy

Miller and Taylor Podhouser. Of the 8 wrestlers, 4

made it to the top 4. Congratulations to:

· Rowdy Miller- 4th in State at 152 lbs

· Brady Miller- 3rd in State at 160 lbs

· Sean Hoffman- 3rd in State at 195 lbs

· Jordan Pitt- 2nd in State at 113 lbs
