11:00 a.m. †Harold & Dorothy Hande req. family
Dear friends in Christ Jesus, On this fourth Sunday of ordinary time the church reminds us of the very important fact that God delights in the humble. He draws near to them, gathers them to himself and blesses them. He looks at the humble and lowly and fills them with his wisdom, virtue and the holiness of Christ. Therefore, only in God does the humble and the righteous depend and boast. In the first reading from the book of Zephaniah, God promise to preserve a remnant for Israel. However, one remarkable thing about this promise is that this group would be made up of only humble and lowly people. Through the church, God has invited us to form part of this humble people that put their confidence in Him. We are invited to be part of this remnant through, integrity, honesty, humility and obedience to God. At times, we try to resist this prestigious rest to which God has invited us. This is because, we often think we can get it only with money, fame, and power. Let us not deceive ourselves, but continue to follow the permanent values that radiates from the person and life of Jesus Christ. In our second reading, St Paul reminds us that God delights in the humble of heart. Although, He does not discriminate, he often choses the lowly and poor in spirit. So, St Paul encourages us not to be ashamed of the Christian community because of its composition of members of little human wisdom, intelligence, power and material wealth. The majority of our communities are made up the poor of the world. This is the will of God manifested in Christ Jesus and testified in the rest of revelation. Hence, St Paul reminds us that God called us to form part of the remnant even when we were not wise in the ordinary sense of the world. He did this in order to realize His Plan. He did not choose us because we were wise or rich. Rather, He chose us because of our lowliness. Through this, God has become our wisdom, virtue and holiness. These are the qualities he really desires in his people. All those who have these are the blessed ones. In the gospel that is sermon on the mountain, Christ recounts and reminds us of the most important Christian virtues that will help us become part of this remnant that God promises to elect for himself in our first reading. If we meditate on this, we will see that the poor in spirit, that is, those who suffer, those who mourn, the hungry and thirsty for justice, those who work for peace, the merciful, the pure in heart, the insulted and persecuted are living a voluntarily stripped life that draws them closer to God. They are the living blessedness that we see in the saints of all times. Saint Francis was stripped in poverty, saint Ignatius in obedience, saint Augustine preferred the love of God, saint Thomas Aquinas embraced the wisdom of God, and saint Theresa of Avila soaked herself in prayer. These, and other saints are reflections of the same Christ. They are the blessed. Today the church reminds us that we could also be part of them if we also persevere as they did. Today, they are the full members of the remnants in God’s eternal kingdom. They pray and wait for us to join them. “How happy are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God” Have a nice weekend. Sincerely, Fr Joseph.

Gaudium Christi West, Friday, February 14, 7-8:30 p.m. St. Mary Parish, Paw Paw is open to all and will begin with Mass followed by Adoration with the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Gaudium Christi (the joy of Christ) is an opportunity to spend time with Jesus Christ present in the Blessed
Sacrament. Offer this time (whether it is 5 minutes or the entire time) to God so you might grow in greater intimacy with Jesus Christ. This is a time for you, in the quiet of your heart to listen and speak with the God who loves you.
Monthly Energizer, Saturday, February 8, 2020, 6-7:30 p.m., St. Mary Parish, Paw Paw, The Energizer consists of food and fellowship, praise and worship music from the band Kleen Sl8, a presentation covering a topic from the beautiful Catholic faith for youth and adults alike, a coinciding craft lesson for kids under 12. The Energizer opens with prayer as we adore our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. The cost is free with a free will donation being accepted. Please join us, bring your family and friends, as together we get energized about our faith!
