Healthy Relationships

Before you can have a healthy relationship with anyone else, you have to learn how to be alone.

PNEUMA

In the Bible, the Greek word for being spiritual is “pneuma” or “pneumatic.” In today’s language, it means drawing power from the human spirit in order to perceive on a higher level.

In 1943, Nazi Germany pressed hard to get endorsements from religious leaders for the persecution of Jews. Led by the Catholic Church in Rome, most religious leaders explained away the obvious satanic actions of Hitler. It was understood that to stand against Hitler meant death.

Bonhoeffer was known for his brilliant theological writings. What he did in WWII overshadowed anything that he had written prior to the war. The Lutheran preacher joined the resistance against his national leader and was captured in 1943.

Bonhoeffer was taken to a camp where he had to learn how to be alone.

Two years in captivity caused Bonhoeffer to long for Christian fellowship. He found it incredibly difficult to coexist with nonbelievers in Jesus who prayed every day for deliverance.
