I recall my Confirmation Class where the best class was when the Rabbi came and explained the similarities and differences between Judaism and Christianity. Actually, what he said about Judaism made sense because my minister kept offering platitudes instead of encouraging us to give thought to roll the stones of our faith around. In a class on how are religions created, the youth were asked to create a shared vision of a new religion. One youth was not present so that youth created another religion as well. Here are the two new religions: We worship a God who looks like an elephant, wearing a pink shirt with #1 on it and goggles that allow God to look inside our souls. God encourages us all to be righteous. If we are, we go to Africa when we die, but if not then we go to Antarctica. Nobody has labels. Everyone agrees. The leader (God) has 5 followers (the youth present for the class) and the followers are called elephies. Commandments are: Don’t be dumb, only wear pink on Wednesday, If you do not attend Temple you have to wear loopy goggles. Cannot be against Legos (we used Legos to create Biblical scenes in Confirmation). And finally leave “Badism” at the door. We worship at Drew’s Temple (constructed by Legos) and the why of this religion is to save elephants. Are you ready to join? The other religion is called Manny Christ (Emmanuel). God is similar to Jesus and says often, “Manny Christ.” God never dies and looks like Manny’s Manz. They follow these commandments: Do not be a complete jerk. And do not be someone you are not. They worship everywhere because Manny is everywhere. Personally, I believe Jesus adheres to “Do not be someone you are not.” So you see, these youth are not our future, they are the present. May we embrace them and walk with them on their journey. Joyfully, Lori

ALL ARE WELCOME AT CENTER CHURCH ON THE COMMON, AN OPEN AND AFFIRMING UCC CONGREGATION,

WHERE THE SPIRIT OF GOD STIRS US TO EMBRACE OUR DIVERSITY, DEEPEN OUR FAITH IN JESUS, SHARE OUR TEARS AND LAUGHTER,

AND EXTEND GOD'S ABUNDANT LOVE AND JUSTICE INTO THE WORLD.

After every year of Confirmation Class I think, “I learned more from them then they from me.” We have some wise, lively, caring youth to be Confirmed (affirming their baptism) on June 9th.

Here are the two new religions:

We worship a God who looks like an elephant, wearing a pink shirt with #1 on it and goggles that allow God to look inside our souls. God encourages us all to be righteous. Come Join Us… We have started marking for the Columbus Day Fair tag sale. We meet from 9-11am,

every Tuesday morning. Come every week or come when you can. We price each article (yes, it is a big job) amidst friendly talk and laughter. For more information, talk to Bobbie, one of the markers or call the church office. We really need more folk so please consider joining us!

Columbus Day Fair – YOUR HELP NEEDED!

We are in need of items for the Columbus Day Fair! To a large extent, the success of this event is because of the amount and the quality of the items we have for sale. This is absolutely the #1 need! So, we look to you and to your friends and neighbors to help out! Yes, we do limit what can be brought in for sale and yes, we do ask that the items are clean and in working order (if an appliance). These suggestions are because that’s what sells and that’s what makes our sale one with a very good reputation.

So please help out if you can. On a Tuesday morning we’re usually marking and can help you unload any items. Other times it is good to call the church office to make sure the church is open. Also, if an evening or weekend works better for you, please just call the church office or Bobbie at 533-3833. We will be glad to arrange a time that is convenient for you. Thanks very much!

Center Church will once again provide Outdoor Ministry to the temporarily homeless and people with food insecurity through Cathedral in the Night on July 21st. Through your generosity and help we cook, bake and make sandwiches and head to Northampton to participate in a brief worship and then serve the meal. Nonperishables needed by July 18th include 100 napkins, forks, non-styrofoam plates (small and large) 100 bottles of water, 8 pkgs granola bars and a large jar of peanut butter. If you wish to make a monetary gift to help with the cost of the meal, we welcome that! A list of perishables will be posted at the church in July and emailed closer to the date. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank you, Deacons, for being our hosts for the month of May. During June, the Human

Resource Team will be our hosts. This team oversees and coordinates terms and conditions of

engagement and termination for all paid positions at the church, with the exception of the

senior pastor. They make recommendations to the Trustees on compensation, benefits and

periodic adjustments for staff. Human Resource members work with the Pastor Congregation

Relations team for pastoral job performance evaluations as needed. The team is also responsible for the

employee handbook, relative to the descriptions, conditions and the like. Presently the members of this team

are: Karen Anderson, Anita Sarro and Katherine Tipton and Sandy Belden (Trustee Rep).

Important Reminder: The next edition of Church at the Center will come out June 27th and will include

information for July and August. There is no August edition. Please think ahead to any team/group

summer activity that will need to be “advertised” and plan to submit it to Thia BY JUNE 24TH !

With summer hours and Thia away - time is limited!

Thanks! And have a wonderful summer!!

Another school year in The Promised Land Sunday School is coming to an end. We have traveled so far these past 10 months together on our journeys of faith. We could not have done it without our volunteers. We count on volunteers to function and thrive as a faith formation program for our youngest church goers.

* Some of you gave your time in the classroom helping to teach the curriculum.

*Some of you served on the Children and Youth Christian Education committee and support the Promised Land ministry with your enthusiasm and collaboration and this year helped to select a new curriculum that was a fantastic fit for our mission.

* Some of you served on the search committee to hire Simone Jacob, a Mount Holyoke College student, who was a wonderful co-teacher in the Promised Land Sunday School this year. She plans to be back with us in the fall.

* There is so much more that our volunteers do and I want to thank you for your vital contributions of service. Flowers will be planted in the church gardens to bloom all summer to honor you. Thank you! The last Sunday school class in the Promised Land will be held on June 9. Have a wonderful summer and see you in September!

A PEEP AT THE BIBLE Rev. Randy Purinton

Job 40: 15-24

"Behold; Behemoth, which I made as I made you... He eats grass like an ox...his power is in the muscles of his belly...His bones are tubes of bronze...He is the first of the works of God."

These verses from the book of Job describe the first animal God created: the hippopotamus.

THOU ART Rev. Art Stanley

What Do You Believe and Does It Matter?

Years ago, I had a clergy friend who used to say, “What you believe doesn’t make any difference, unless what you believe makes all the difference!”

Do you think my friend had a point? Do you agree with him? Psychologists tell us that our beliefs and our values determine our actions, that they motivate what we do. What motivates us to shape our morals within a framework of faith? Since having faith is a choice then why do we choose to believe? There must be some benefit.

In so many ways and days our values shape our behavior. We sing the Star Spangled Banner because we have certain ideas about the values associated with American citizenship. Those values motivate us to sing and act according to certain principles We pay our bills because we believe that trust and punctuality are values that grant us a reputation for honesty and fair-dealing.

We reflect on our values the way a rudder on a ship corrects a course: We want to be straight with ourselves and others. We value having an open mind but we need to close it on something. In church, we close in on the service. In the world we close in on our values. In both contexts, our beliefs matter. Shalom!

The trustees were excited to hear an update from the preservation team concerning possibilities for funding under the National Historic Designation which we are waiting for. The State has already approved this designation. Once we have this, then it makes us eligible for funding through various sources including the National Fund for Sacred Places. We are excited that, with not much time to get an application in, Randy Hyvonen was able to find all the appropriate information, with help from a few others, needed to fill one out by May 1. Thank you so much, Randy H.!!!

We received updates from Lori about the confirmands and possible new members. John Hoffman, treasurer, stated that at April’s end, we should have used about 33% of the budget. Income stands at 39.88% of our projected dollars while expenses are at 35.08%. We are doing well so far with one month until we begin summertime mode and we have more income than expenses which is a good thing right now. And our permanently invested funds are doing well at present too, so our Wells Fargo team is cautiously optimistic. We were disappointed to hear that the plant sale for the last Saturday in May had to be cancelled for lack of plants and member participation but there may be a fall solution.

We are working on procuring a camera and monitor system to cover the office Church St. exterior door. This issue was brought forward from the Safety Task Force and the trustees approved that in April. We are still working on an energy update and have met with someone about all of our stained-glass vertical windows in the sanctuary. Speaking of which, you will soon see a “lift” which Adam Suska will be using to finish up the exterior work on those same windows. If you noticed some of the sanctuary roof peak cap hanging recently, it has all been replaced and is now secure. However, we are still working on the roof leak in the Crossway area. Plans are in the works to replace the Park St. door by the chapel which is old, not in good shape and been letting considerable cold air into the building. Several other Education Wing doors are being repainted. Our sanctuary boiler recirculating pump has not been working correctly, so we are working on that too.

Finally, we heard a presentation by Al Duffy, who has been chairing the Safety Task Force for the last year. That group has had its final meeting until fall and he is presenting the finding/suggestions/plans for securing both the sanctuary and education buildings in a variety of circumstances to the Council, Trustees and Deacons/Ushers this month. Once that is completed, the information will be also sent to the police and fire departments and the MH security folks. This group has been working very hard and we all owe them a debt of gratitude. Members of the Task Force are: Lynne Bertram, Eliot Chartrand, Al Duffy, Bill Giles, Cindy Morrell, Jim Noonan, Art Procter, Don Sibley, Doug Smith, Stephanie Strand and Rev. Souder. We are the first church in South Hadley to confront this increasing, unfortunate reality of today’s world.

The Hampshire Association Executive Committee is planning a wonderful summer afternoon of food, music, and activities for our Hampshire Association churches. On Sunday, June 23, we will gather at Conant Park on East Street in Southampton. Tavern on the Hill will provide the BBQ, and Barry Searle and Friends will provide the bluegrass music. Bring your lawn chairs and plan to have a great afternoon with no

business - just pure social time, games & activities in the summer sun!

Please encourage your congregation to participate - we are aiming for 10 people from each church to come and help us live our UCC association covenant. We need RSVPs so that we can order an appropriate amount of food.

If you have any questions, please call me or Ton Whiteside, Christina Williams, or Carol Smith.

Council met May 2 with Anita Sarro of HR/Pastor/Congregation Relations as our Lead pro-tem. Rev. Souder opened the meeting by asking what keeps us faithful. Possibly by “walking humbly” and being kind to others. Council members responded with monitoring family relationships, maintaining and being tolerant by finding peace, keeping life in perspective because not everything depends on you. There are strengths and gifts in others. HR/Pastor/Congregation Relations is considering employee compensation (increased hours) for the Youth leader position. The team has also discussed an internship for Emily Carle. This would start in the Fall for 12 weeks with an average of seven hours per week. They are also continuing discussion about the all-church evaluation. Outreach is exploring new partnerships which could help high risk individuals. Trustees are looking into having a system for heating the building “on demand.” Stewardship announced that publicity for their Fall benefit concert will begin July 1.CE/Adult Ed reported that the Youth Group has ended until Fall. Promised Land staff is very satisfied with their current curriculum which is an improvement from past programs. Safe Church Task Force was reported by Al Duffy who handed out the Final Draft #7, 4/24/19 packets. He read aloud the pertinent information. Council unanimously agreed with appreciation for the overall presentation and thanked Al and the wonderful task force members for their solid endeavor on this timely and worthwhile undertaking! The Preservation Committee has received word that we are now on the State’s register of historic buildings. Next we wait for National historic status. Lori remarked that she will be reinstating interviews with community “stakeholders” and asking how Center Church is perceived in our community. The June 4 Council meeting will be led by John Anz. David C. Morrell, Clerk

The Peterson Memorial Education Fund committee is very pleased to announce that we have awarded scholarships to six highly deserving individuals. The total amount awarded this year was just over $2,700. The Peterson Memorial Education Fund was created in memory of beloved Center Church members Gus, Ginger and Barbara Peterson and their lifelong commitment to education. They believed that every person, regardless of his/her financial situation should be given the opportunity to receive an education that could lead them to success in life.

We had twenty-three qualified applicants this year and choosing the finalists proved to be challenging. However, we are delighted to be able to help support six remarkable individuals. The recipients of the Peterson Memorial Education Fund have all overcome diversity to pursue an education that will better themselves, their family and their community. They are all truly inspirational people and we hope that by receiving one of these scholarships they will be encouraged to continue to pursue their educational aspirations.

The Peterson Memorial Education Fund Committee Barbara Ayers, Elizabeth Griffin, Sarah Smith

Thank you to all of those who attended and participated in the Estate Planning & Planned Giving conversation after worship on May 5th. It was both educational and inspirational for those present. Great thanks as well to Bob Russell and Peter McAvoy who added critical expertise and personal insight to the presentation. There will be much more to come and follow-up with those who were there and those who could not be. In the meantime, please let one of us know if you would like information from the event or have any questions about estate planning, planned giving and how Center Church can be a part of those considerations.

And, very exciting news....the Stewardship Committee, will once again be presenting a fall community concert event and fundraiser for the church and other local beneficiary organizations. In addition to Center Church, this all-female-performer concert will benefit deserving local women's and music organizations. More news soon about the concert, performers, benefiting organizations, tickets and sponsorship. But for now, just save the date ~ Friday, October 25th. Stay tuned... Your Stewardship Committee

BLANKET THE WORLD WITH LOVE

Our 2019 Blanket Sunday offering totaled $ 685 which will provide almost 69 warm blankets. Center Church is part of an important effort to help people who are temporarily homeless and the many victims of natural disaster here in the United States and around the world. Thank you for your generosity.

Strengthen the Church The Center Church Outreach team has asked me to share something personal about the upcoming National UCC special offering for Strengthen the Church (STC). The UCC basic description for this offering reads like this:

Strengthen the Church is a special mission offering to reimagine and build the future of the UCC. Shared at the conference and national levels, STC largely supports youth ministries and full-time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC does not have a strong presence. It also provides support for existing church’s new initiatives.

As a Conference Minister I had numerous opportunities to be involved with some different initiatives related to STC, and the most interesting for me were my dealings with new initiatives with Samoan congregations in the Pacific Northwest. I had my first experience with a Samoan congregation in Tacoma, WA that was ready to build a new congregation. The pastor invited the head of the Conference New Church Start Committee (Jim) and me to a meeting. It turns out many of the members of the congregation were present along with an architect as we met in a large tent on their new property. It was made clear to us that an immediate grant was needed to fund architectural drawings and get them started as they applied for a National UCC grant to begin phase I of a new building.

Jim was so enthusiastic about the venture that he stood up and pronounced that the Conference would fund that initial grant! I was a bit taken aback since such a decision would need Conference Board approval, but I didn’t feel I could say so in the moment. So, I crossed my fingers and hoped that the Board would back us up. And they did…and so did National UCC. Later on, I attended a major fundraising event that the congregation held at their new location, and delegations were there from Samoan congregations in Samoa, San Francisco, Seattle, etc. In a ritualistic dance event, different delegations came forth and made pledges – large enough that the congregation met its goal for the total match needed for completing their initial building!

I later carried my learnings about Samoan churches into efforts to bring new Congregational heritage Samoan congregations in Anchorage, AK into the Conference and the UCC. At the time I worked with four different groups, and today there are three UCC Samoan congregations in Anchorage – each of which has benefited from funds given to the Strengthen the Church Offering.

SCHOOLING CHILDREN INEARLY SOUTH HADLEY During this time of school and college graduations, our early church history notes that our first minister, Rev. Grindall Rawson (1733-1741) and (whose infamous “claim to fame” was being ignominiously dragged, gagged, and dismissed from our first meetinghouse) was the fledgling new village of South Hadley’s first “school” teacher. It seems only fitting to give Rev. Rawson credit for his worthwhile efforts to educate our early resident’s children. He taught them in the “old English custom.” This meant that a minister would use the “livingroom” of his parsonage as a class room. So our first parsonage, known as the Rawson House having a large 25

foot long by 20 feet wide room complete with a warming fireplace, became a “schooling” place. After a few years and after Rev. Rawson was married, a new teacher Timothy Hillyer took over. Hillyer and Rawson became close friends and were dedicated to educating the youth. Mr. Hillyer taught his students in his three-room house built by the early settlers. Mostly boys were educated. Among his subjects were reading, writing and “simple” arithmetic. Spelling was not widely taught, but it became Mr. Hillyer’s “tour de force!” Being dismayed by seeing how careless spelling was dismissed by such word use as: “ketched” for catch, “gografy” for geography, “skolur” for scholar, “lyfe” for life, “pertickler” for particular, “cheer” for chair and “set” for sit, he became a strict educator. Timothy Hillyer defied the odds of the day and was so well respected that one of the peaks in the Mt. Holyoke Range was called Hillyer’s Knob or sometimes spelled in jest as Hilliard’s Knob. When Rev. Rawson was forcibly removed, Mr. Hillyer protested by not attending communion for more than a year. However, he and his family soon “slid” into poverty. By 1807, the last Hillyer (David) took his own life. The Hillyer home was torn down and a new house was built by the Chandler family. When Rev. John Woodbridge, our second minister (1741-1782), took over the pulpit, a permanent one-room schoolhouse was built across from the Woodbridge parsonage. The parsonage which has been removed from its original location was where the parking lot by the All Saints Church is now. The school was across the pathway/road from there. Both the parsonage and the school were built with a cellar below. These were constructed as a precautionary measure due to hostile Native American activity at that time. And for the many inquiries about a “phantom tunnel” here is the explanation. A tunnel was dug to connect the school with the second parsonage for safety reasons. On rainy days the children would play “hide and seek” games in and out of the tunnel. According to Town history, the tunnel eventually collapsed, causing no injuries. It was never rebuilt. Early schooling was a “sparse/stoic” endeavor. Supplies had to be made by the students. Quills/pens for writing came from wild geese wings. Their wings produced a stubby quill and the students were taught the “art” of creating a writing utensil. Ink was prepared by boiling the barks of the oak and hard maple trees. The barks had to boil for a few days. To give the ink a glossy look, a little sugar was added. The ink was so durable and non-fading that many diaries, accounting ledgers and letters are still legible today! 6/19 David C. Morrell, Center Church historian

WANTED…

We find that if the items we sell at the Columbus Day Tag Sale are bundled attractively, they sell better. To make that happen (for smaller items like buttons, sewing notions, screws, pins.. you get the idea…) we need:

1) Small jars – up to about 16oz. – we will remove the labels

2) Jewelry boxes – for necklaces, earrings etc. 3) Canning Jars – any size – we have extra lids

available if yours are missing

Please drop off your items at the Fellowship Hall donation tables.
