In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo bravely volunteers to take the treacherous journey and deliver the ring to Mordor. Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli stack hands with him, offering their protection, sword, bow and axe in support. The “Fellowship of the Ring” is born. Tolkien knew something of what lies at the heart of real community. It’s a great scene that for me connects with a desire to be involved in a grand and risky adventure with companions who are all in. In North America you’d be hard pressed to find church referred to as a grand and risky adventure with companions who are all in, but in Acts, that’s what you’ve got. Fellowship isn’t socializing - it’s radically active devotion.
