Some Biblical Reflections

Page 4: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Isaiah 46:8-11. 8"Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, you transgressors, 9remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,' 11calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.

Jeremiah 31:33. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Isaiah 49:6. he says: "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."

Genesis 1:26-28. 26Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

Psalms 119:97-105. 97Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. 99I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. 100I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts. 101I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. 102I do not turn aside from your rules, for you have taught me. 103How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. 105Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Exodus 18:21-23. 21Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. 22And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. 23If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace."

Philippians 2:1-4. 1So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Ephesians 2:8-10. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Page 12: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Ephesians 4:1-6. 1I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call-- 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Strategic Planning and Management

Page 14: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

SOME THOUGHTS FROM THE BIBLE…. We have a Creator God who planned and

designed everything…◦ “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.”

(Psalm 19:1) Was something that God did with us in

mind….◦ “For I know the plans that I think toward you, says the Lord, plans of peace and not

of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11) Is something He wants us to do with Him

in mind….◦ “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all

your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5,6) Is something that prioritizes His will, not

ours… ◦ For Christians, planning is to a large extent, discerning the will of God,

more than the aspirations of men.

Page 15: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

STRATEGIC PLANNING 101… Strategic planning determines…

◦ where an organization is going◦ how it's going to get there, and ◦ how it'll know if it got there or not.

Strategic planning is a data-based process…◦ Be sure about your data◦ Be strict about your logic◦ Believe in common sense

Far more important than the strategic plan itself, is the strategic planning process.◦ Gives direction to organization◦ Provides motivation to its people◦ Expresses its spirit and aspirations◦ Commits the organization to move

Page 16: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Three Types of Strategic Planning

◦ Goals-based planning starts with focus on the organization's mission (and vision and/or values), goals to work toward the mission, strategies to achieve the goals, and action planning (who will do what and by when).

◦ Issues-based strategic planning often starts by examining issues facing the organization, strategies to address those issues, and action plans.

◦ Organic strategic planning might start by articulating the organization's vision and values and then action plans to achieve the vision while adhering to those values.

MANAGEMENT 101

Page 20: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

SOME INTRODUCTORY PRINCIPLES Management is doing things through other

people◦ While a manager can also have some technical jobs he or she needs to

do, his or her main job is to accomplish his or her objectives through the work and skills of other people

There are four things that a manager does in carrying out this job◦ Planning◦ Leading ◦ Organizing ◦ Controlling

This makes managers take on a variety of roles◦ Strategist◦ Coach◦ Cheer leader◦ Administrator◦ Auditor

Page 21: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

PLANNING The first and most important role of a manager Managers are primarily expected to provide

direction and this is the result of careful and strategic planning

Planning involves:◦ Scenario building◦ Forecasting and projecting intended results◦ Determining future actions and directions◦ Breaking them down into actionable programs and projects◦ Appropriating the resources needed for the above

While companies and organizations can have planning staff or personnel, the responsibility of driving the planning process rests on the manager

Page 22: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

LEADING Leading is influencing people to move

towards a certain predetermined direction Spiritual leadership (Blackaby says) is

moving people on to God’s agenda There are people who are born leaders but

leadership skills can be developed Leading involves:

◦ Praying◦ Communicating◦ Delegating◦ Motivating◦ Coaching

Page 23: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

ORGANIZING Organizing is setting up a group of people in a

manner that will enable them to work together towards the objectives of the organization

Organizing should be done around the critical objectives of an organization◦ Businesses: Sales and Marketing, Operations, Finance, Human

Resource Development

Organizing Principles:◦ Organize around your objectives◦ Establish the appropriate span of control◦ Control the hierarchy (or the height) of the organization◦ No one-to-one reporting relationships

Page 24: CHURCH GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

CONTROLLING Control is best located at the level where

actions or transactions are taking place (responsible empowerment)◦ Empower people to carry out their functions…◦ But set up the rules of engagement and a system of checks

and balances When you expect something to be done,

you need to inspect whether it is being done (expect – inspect principle)

Periodic review is essential to good control◦ Check actual accomplishments versus plan◦ Do variance analysis to identify problems◦ Develop and implement corrective measures

The best form of control is when a manager can predict what is going to happen and that begins with a good plan
