Mercy’s Measure “Measuring Our Gift”
Before you even begin reading this, I know that some people will think I am asking for more money in the collection. If I were, there would be no better Gospel than today’s example of the Widow’s Mite to convince everyone, including myself, that we are probably not contributing enough on any given Sunday. Unfortunately, there is also no Gospel more likely to be used by avaricious priests and preachers to effectively reduce the savings of widows and widowers, leaving them impoverished and causing great emotional and financial pain to their families. That is why, I never use this Gospel to ask for money! However, it is a Gospel I use to discuss the monetary side of Stewardship.
In the Widow’s Mite, Jesus praises the widow for placing two copper coins in the temple collection (pennies). The Gospel says these coins are “all she had, her whole livelihood.” If Jesus means that the woman could no longer feed herself or her family, pay her rent or utilities, buy necessities for daily life like soap or toilet paper, then I would be ashamed to be a Christian! How can it be good to deny your family food, shelter or clothing simply to support or enrich the Church? And while some preachers may suggest that giving her all meant that God would bless her with other wealth, that is not even hinted at in today’s Gospel, so we know that is not what Jesus means. Instead, Jesus compares her gift to the many other, larger gifts that were being proudly and conspicuously dropped into the Temple treasury. The woman made a great sacrifice to make her gift. Maybe she chose a less expensive toilet paper or soap. Maybe she chose to eat chicken instead of steak. Maybe she chose to fast for a day or to make coffee at home instead of buying from Starbucks. We do not know what she sacrificed, only that she made a sacrifice in order to give as much as she could. And it was the sacrifice that Jesus praised above all else!
What, then, is the measure of our weekly gift to the Church? Whether large or small in comparison to others, how do we measure the amount we give in support of the parish ministries and to pay the parish expenses? Do we think we are simply paying our share of the expenses? Do we give a comfortable amount, something we will not miss or do not need? Do we pull it from our pocket during the Mass or wait until the homily is over and use it as a “tip” if I preach well? Is it the same we’ve always given--and when did we choose that amount? Do we look at how much we make or do we say the Church doesn’t need anymore than this? Do we choose to make a sacrifice when we make our gift or do we give only from our surplus? Do we even think about the amount we give and why we should give that amount instead of another?
The first measure of our Church offering should be the measure of what we have received from God’s abundant blessings. Not everyone is equally blessed, so not every gift can be the same. The second measure of our offering should be our responsibility to take care of our families. Not everyone has the same responsibilities, so not every gift can be the same. The third and most important measure of our offering is our thankfulness and willingness to sacrifice. Although the amounts may differ, every one of us can be as grateful as the widow for the blessings we have received!

La Medida de la Merced “Midiendo Nuestro Regalo”
Antes de que usted comience a leer esto, sé que algunas personas pensarán que estoy pidiendo más dinero en la colecta. Si así fuera, no habría ningún Evangelio mejor que el ejemplo de hoy del Óbolo de la Viuda para convencer a todo el mundo, incluyéndome a mí mismo, que probablemente no estamos contribuyendo lo suficiente en cualquier domingo dado. Por desgracia, también no hay ningún Evangelio tan obvio a utilizarse por los sacerdotes avaros y predicadores para reducir con eficacia los ahorros de las viudas y viudos, dejándolos empobrecidos y causándoles a sus familias gran dolor emocional y financiero. ¡Por eso, nunca utilizo este Evangelio para pedir dinero! Y mientras que algunos predicadores sugieran que dar todo lo que ella tenia para vivir significaba que Dios la bendeciría con otra riqueza, esto ni siquiera es insinuado en el Evangelio de hoy, por lo tanto sabemos que esto no es lo que Jesús da a entender. En cambio, Jesús compara su regalo a los muchos otros regalos más grandes y ostentosos echados en la alcancía del Templo. La mujer hizo un gran sacrificio para hacer su regalo. Tal vez ella eligió un papel higiénico o jabón menos costoso. Tal vez ella optó por comer pollo en lugar de carne. Tal vez ella eligió ayunar por un día o hizo café en casa en vez de comprarlo en Starbucks. No sabemos lo que ella sacrificó, sólo que ella hizo un sacrificio para dar tanto como pudo. ¡Y fue el sacrificio que Jesús alabó sobre todo lo demás!
¿Entonces, cual es la medida de nuestro regalo semanal a la Iglesia? Ya sea grande o pequeño en comparación a otros, ¿cómo medimos la cantidad que podemos ofrecer en apoyo de los ministerios parroquiales y a pagar las deudas de la parroquia? ¿Pensamos que simplemente estamos pagando nuestra cuota de las deudas? ¿Damos una cantidad cómoda, algo que tenemos en abundancia o no necesitamos? ¿Lo sacamos de nuestro bolsillo durante la Misa o esperamos hasta que termine la homilía y utilizarlo como “propina” si Yo predico bien? ¿Es lo mismo que siempre hemos dado--y cuando elegimos esa cantidad? ¿Miramos cuánto ganamos o decimos que la iglesia no necesita más de lo que damos? ¿Elegimos hacer un sacrificio cuando hacemos nuestro regalo o sólo damos de lo que nos sobra? ¿Por lo menos pensamos en la cantidad que damos y por qué debemos dar esa cantidad en lugar de otra?
La primera medida de nuestra ofrenda debería ser la medida de lo que hemos recibido de las bendiciones abundantes de Dios. No todo el mundo es igualmente bendecido, así que no todo regalo puede ser el mismo. La segunda medida de nuestra ofrenda debería ser nuestra responsabilidad de cuidar de nuestras familias. No todos tienen las mismas responsabilidades, así que no todo regalo puede ser el mismo. La tercera medida de nuestra ofrenda y la más importante es nuestro agradecimiento y disposición al sacrificio. Aunque las cantidades pueden ser diferentes, ¡cada uno de nosotros debe estar tan agradecido como la viuda por las bendiciones que hemos recibido!

Welcome to Our Lady of Mercy! ¡Bienvenidos a Nuestra Sra. de la Merced!
SHOULD I USE ENVELOPES? Many people choose not to use envelopes because they want their offering to be a spiritual gift known only to God. While the sentiment is beautiful, we as parishioners also have an obligation to support our parish. Using envelopes to make your contribution allows the Church to know that you are present and that you support the parish to the best of your abilities. The amount NEVER MATTERS--only the fact that you make a gift!
When loose money is placed in the collection, the next person along the way can be tempted to remove the money, hoping that the usher is not paying attention. Using envelopes hides the amount you give, allowing you to give a larger amount without tempting others and showing your trust in God’s blessings to you and your family!
SHRINES AND CANDLES A beautiful and moving part of our faith is the lighting of candles as we pray for a loved one or ourselves in time of need. Often, we light candles in memory of those who have passed away, and many others light candles when they have a petition to present to God on behalf of themselves or someone else. The lit candle symbolizes our prayer standing before God long after we are too exhausted to remain at the shrine to pray. Our Lady of Mercy offers people the chance to purchase “five day” candles to place in one of our statue niches as you make your prayer to God. You can also bring these candles home to use. You can purchase these candles from the St. Jude store in the back of the church which is toward the right hand side as you enter. When the store is not open, the ushers will be happy to sell the candles to you.
SAFETY FIRST! In order to maintain fire safety standards, the parish is taking a number of steps to make sure that lit candles do not create a hazard. First, where there is most danger of fire, electric vigil lights will be installed. The shrines for Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of the Clouds will have electric vigil lights. You may still use a real candle, but it must be placed in the Baptistery area on an approved candle stand. We will be installing new and larger candle stands where candles may be placed near the various shrines and statues in the Baptistery and the other shrines in the church. We will no longer allow candles to be placed at the foot of a statue, on the pedestal holding the statue or on the floor. If a candle is found at the base of a statue or on the floor, it will be removed immediately. We have already endured one fire and will try our best to eliminate the possibility of a second statue fire. Candles purchased at other stores will also be removed as the glass in these candles is often weak and breaks from the heat. Children should be watched when near candles. When it comes to fire, please think of safety first!
SANTUARIOS Y VELAS Una pieza hermosa y emotiva de nuestra fe es el encendimiento de velas cuando rezamos por un ser querido o por nosotros mismos en tiempo de necesidad. A menudo, encendemos velas en memoria de los que han fallecido, y muchos otros encienden velas cuando tienen una petición para presentarle a Dios a nombre de sí mismos o por alguien más. Los santuarios de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y de Nuestra Señora de la Nube tendrán velas eléctricas. Usted también podrá usar una vela verdadera, pero debe ser colocada en el área de Bautizos con estantes de velas aprobados. Instalaremos nuevos y más grandes estantes de velas donde las velas se puedan poner cerca de los varios santuarios y estatuas en el Bautisterio y en las otros
santuarios en la iglesia. Ya no se permitirán más velas al pie de una estatua, en el pedestal que sostiene la estatua o en el piso. Si una vela se encuentra en la base de una estatua o en el piso, será quitada inmediatamente. Ya hemos experimentado un fuego e intentaremos lo mejor posible de eliminar la posibilidad de un segundo incendio de una estatua.
