Church News Deadline 20th of each month ~ Sput Turnbull 70556 619th Avenue Pawnee City, NE 68420 402-852-2392 [email protected] Together with Christians in every time and place, we confess belief in one church. “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all” Ephesians 4:4-6 By God’s grace, the church is one. And yet the one church is divided, fragmented into distinct traditions, communions, and de- nominations that live in various degrees of estrangement from one another. In turn, each part of the church embodies tensions in its own life that threaten to divide the one church. These divisions do not eliminate the church’s unity, but they weaken its common mission. The unity of the church is both God’s real gift and God’s effec- tive calling. Thus, the one church of Jesus Christ, established by God in the power of the Holy Spirit, is called to break down di- viding walls of hostility that sepa- rate churches from one another and to build up the fullness of communion that binds churches together in common faith and wit- ness. In God’s grace the one church has been given gifts to “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, un- til all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12,13). In gratitude for God’s grace and mercy we commit ourselves to the use of God’s gifts within our indi- vidual parts of the church and also search to use our gifts for fuller expression of the greater church. Priscilla Adams, RN, daughter of Don & Linna Mort, recently received the Division Leadership award from the International Society of Psychiat-ric Consultation Liaison Nurses at their annual conference in Tucson, Arizona. Priscilla has served as a PCLN nurse at BryanLGH for 20 years and has made significant contri-butions to this subspecialty in clinical practice, education, and leadership roles. She continues to seek new learning experiences that enhance her practice including bereavement coun-seling, sexual assault nurse examiner program and geriatric nursing.

We took in over $410. at the ga-rage sale which included $101. for the piano. Josh Glynn was very happy to get the piano for his chil-dren. There was a steady stream of buy-ers and lookers for most of the morn-ing. We asked some of them where they were from and buyers came from Syracuse, Falls City, Sterling, and Marysville among other towns. It's an interesting day to talk with people as they look over the "trash or treasure" items. We do not put a price on items, which makes it a much easier job. Most people are generous and make up for those who are less inclinded to give what an item is worth. We clear as much with less work, than if we priced each item. (Easier not to have to make change, also!) We used ALL the white tables which made it easier to organize and have places for more items.

Garage Sale Summary!

Many times children’s stories begin with, “Once upon a time”. Recently I heard a message and the man said his favorite words in the scripture were: “It came to pass”. I thought this was similar to “once upon a time”, and the be-ginning of a story, or parable. But I was wrong. What he meant, was, it was a relief to know that “It came to pass” meant, to him, that it would pass away… or that it would not last. One lady used to comment “This, too, will pass,” and then she would add the explanation, “This means the good AND the bad.” Isn’t it good to know that no matter what comes out way, good or bad, blessing or bane, that as God’s child, He is with us, and will never leave us? He walks with us through the valley, and in the sunshine. Not matter what comes to pass, He is in control, we are not.

THANK YOU . Thank you to all who brought things to sell at the garage sale the first weekend in May. Thank you to those who purchased a treasure, or gave a donation. Thanks to those who set up tables, carried out boxes from the store room, helped sort and arrange items, were there to help during the sale, and to those who packed up the left overs, and to those who took the left overs--the clothing went to the Mis-sion in Seneca, the other items to the Good Will in Omaha. We took in $410. which includes the $101 for the piano. It’s not too soon to begin sorting and saving for the fall sale!

Thank You Very Much!

There is a story that goes with this photo. Look for it next month.

Today’s world is a busy place. We are busy and our children are often busier. Rushing from one activity to the next, we barely have time to connect with each other, so why commit my child to another activity this summer? Because God is calling our children to connect with him, and church camp is an ideal place to start or renew a relationship with God. But don’t take our word for it, listen to what some of our campers are saying: “I saw God a lot this week.” “It was very awesome!” “This camp had a huge impact on my faith and my life in general, just by being here.” “My experience with God here is something I hope to take home to my everyday life.” “I learned how to treat God and his crea-tion with respect.” Kamp Kaleo’s 7th Annual Junk Jaunt Contacts: Janet Domeier 402-483-2743; Ruth Few 402-489-4832 In 2010 four large barns at the Rodeo ground in Burwell were filled with sale items, and over 200 volunteers were in-volved in preparation and sale of items which totaled over $22,000. We are asked to make a commitment in one or more of the following ways: Pray, Accumulate items for sale, Assist with pre-sale sorting and pricing in Lincoln or Burwell, Assist with sale set-up prior week in Burwell, Assist with sale in Bur-well, Make a monetary donation, Other……This is a joint effort with the UCC so you might be able to go with others from Salem or Friedens.

WHY SHOULD I SEND MY CHILD, GRAND CHILD, OR NEIGHBOR TO CHURCH CAMP?

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is theVETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote. It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag, It is the VETERAN who serves under the Flag, ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM. I'd be EXTREMELY proud if this email reached as many as possible. We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve. God Bless them all!!! Makes you proud to be an AMERICAN!!!!!

Proud to be an American

Lizzy Miller ran in the 3200 meter relay and the 3200 meter run and usually placed in both during her high school days. 3200 meter is 8 times around the track so I don’t think Lizzy is very sad about giving up her running shoes and picking up a softball and bat as she plays this summer to prepare herself for the Hastings College softball team. Here is the reaction from the first time she say the tornado damage, “It's unbelievable. Like no one (the media) doesn't talk about AL anymore but everything is still just in shreds every-where. They've managed to get stuff in piles and clear the roads at least. I think there's power most everywhere and the water is okay.” Mission Reports: Vern Schulte reports on a recent mission trip made up of volunteers from age 11-80: "We had a great weekend in Mapleton, IA assisting with the disaster recovery in the area. supportive. God is definitely at work in their church and in their community! CrossBridge had 32 volunteers (men, women and children) meet on Friday evening and travel to Maple-ton. Once we arrived, we got settled, had a devotion time and prayed for God to join us and bless our efforts. Saturday morning the group woke up early, enjoyed a fabulous breakfast served by the members of the church and set out to work in the community. Between Satur-day and Sunday we hauled countless dump truck and pickup loads of debris to the landfill and tree pile! It was hard work, but it was god’s work and our group was blessed just as much, if not more, than the people we served." 500 Mile Snowmobile Trip In the Arctic Circle Lance Westing went with 10 of his students, along with adult sponsors and 3 students from other villages in the area on a 500 mile snowmobile trip in the Arctic Circle. Lance is the Kotzebue High School teacher of hunting, trapping, and survival. The caravan of 15 snow-machines left Kotzebue on the morning of Monday, April 11, and returned Friday evening. Lance, Duane’s son, is a high school science teacher and coach in Kotzebue, AK and his wife Charlotte is a biologist for Alaska Fish and Game. She spends her work days in a two seated airplane observing wildlife and doing a variety of wildlife management duties, especially with Musk Ox, and Caribou. Charlotte is tagging a caribou calf. It is easiest to catch the caribou as they are swimming across rivers. Lance and Charlotte met and graduated from Hasting College. There are articles about both Lance and Charlotte on the bulletin board at church Rev. Dr. Ed Bridwell has written a new book called "The Pathology of Hyperbolic Relig-ion." This is Dr. Bridwell’s sixth book. Ed is a retired minister and psychologist and lives in Lincoln with his wife, LaVon. This book builds upon the work that he did for his PhD disser-tation in which he studied adherents of Pentecostal/Charismatic churches. WHICH CHURCHES ARE GROWING? Bill Tenny-Brittian in the May-June Issue of Net Results Magazine said that he has observed that the congregations that are growing possess certain thing in common and it’s not their theology or worship style or organizational structures. Growing Churches: 1. Are intentional about building relationships and extending over-the-top hospitality to their guests. 2. Members and participants are truly excited about what’s going on in their own lives and in the lives of those in their small groups and worship services. 3. They are led by clergy and lay leaders who are reading, watching, and listening to what’s going on in the culture and in the effective church.
