QUIET DESPERATION In 1854 Henry David Thoreau published Walden; or, Life in the Woods”, a narra- tive about the two years, two months, and two days he spent at Walden Pond in Massachusetts from 1845 to 1847. In chapter one of that book, Thoreau wrote, The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. As he observed, many of us reach a point in our lives where we begin to realize that we will never be able to fulfill the dreams that we once had in our youth. So we resign ourselves to quietly live out the rest of our days unfulfilled and unsat- isfied, just going through the motions until it is all over; this resignation confirms the quiet desperation of our existence. But the problem may not be that we have failed to fulfill our dreams; the problem may be that our dreams were not the same as the dreams that God had for us (read what Mary said in Luke 1:38). When we are spiritually aligned with our Heavenly Father, then our dreams will coincide with His will, our lives will be filled with His purpose, and all things will work together for our good (Romans 8:28). Thoreau also wrote in Waldenthat, I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately...and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.Well, we Christians live deliberate purposeful lives that are in tune with God, and this gives us a sense of accomplishment that eludes unbelievers (read Paul's bene- diction in II Timothy 4:7 and 8). And because we are convinced that we will receive our eternal crown, we do not succumb to the same despair, frustration, and dissatisfaction that plagues the rest of the world. In our daily walk we continue to lay up in heaven lasting and meaningful treasures, both small and great, and this gives us the inner joy and peace of God (Matthew 6:19 21 and Philippians 4:4 – 9). So then, we know that we have life more abundantly, and at the end of our days here on earth we will confidently say that we have not lived our lives in vain (John 10:10 and I Corinthians 15:58). --Jim Crooks Church News November 8, 2020 Yucaipa Church of Christ 33981 Yucaipa Blvd. Yucaipa, CA 92399 Office: (909) 797-1919 Email: [email protected] Website: Yucaipachurchofchrist.org Services have been modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. • QUIET DESPERATION

In 1854 Henry David Thoreau published “Walden; or, Life in the Woods”, a narra-tive about the two years, two months, and two days he spent at Walden Pond in Massachusetts from 1845 to 1847.

In chapter one of that book, Thoreau wrote, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation.”

As he observed, many of us reach a point in our lives where we begin to realize that we will never be able to fulfill the dreams that we once had in our youth.

So we resign ourselves to quietly live out the rest of our days unfulfilled and unsat-isfied, just going through the motions until it is all over; this resignation confirms the quiet desperation of our existence.

Thoreau also wrote in “Walden” that, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately...and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Well, we Christians live deliberate purposeful lives that are in tune with God, and this gives us a sense of accomplishment that eludes unbelievers (read Paul's bene-diction in II Timothy 4:7 and 8).

And because we are convinced that we will receive our eternal crown, we do not succumb to the same despair, frustration, and dissatisfaction that plagues the rest of the world.

In our daily walk we continue to lay up in heaven lasting and meaningful treasures, both small and great, and this gives us the inner joy and peace of God (Matthew 6:19 – 21 and Philippians 4:4 – 9).

So then, we know that we have life more abundantly, and at the end of our days here on earth we will confidently say that we have not lived our lives in vain (John 10:10 and I Corinthians 15:58). --Jim Crooks

to venga, (Hebreos 1: 1-2). “Luego el fin, cuando entregue el reino al Dios y Padre, cuando haya suprimido todo dominio, toda autoridad y potencia.” 1 Co-rintios 15:24.

=Are We Living In The Last Days?= Absolutely. Let us study the following bible passages and the writ-er’s thoughts: The Old Testament prophets said, “Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.” Isaiah 2:2. “Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established (the church) on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow to it” Micah 4:1. The church Jesus Christ promised, when saying: “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church …” Matthew 16:18, 19, was established on the day of Pentecost fol-lowing the resurrection of the Lord, Acts 2:47. Thus the last days began in Acts 2 in fulfillment of Jesus Christs’ promise. On that day, Peter told his audience that what was happening on that very occasion in Acts 2 was the fulfillment of Joel’s prophesy which was to come to pass in the last days. Please read Joel 2:28 and Acts 2:16, 17. Thus, we are now living in the last days and that has been happen-ing for over 2,000 years. The New Testament says, “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, …” Hebrews 1:1,2. Here, the inspired writer makes it clear that the last days were currently in effect, and if the last days were al-ready in effect at that time, we must conclude that they continue today. Then, remember that: The church of Christ was to begin in the last days as it was said

by the prophets (Isaiah 2:2, Micah 4:1). That the church was established on Pentecost, (Acts 2). That the last days continue today and will not cease until Jesus

Christ returns, (Hebrews 1:1, 2). “Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and pow-er,” I Corinthians 15:24. — Rene & Rosa Hernandez
