The Gift of Self to Others High school graduation is a significant milestone in our lives. We tend to look at it as the beginning of adulthood. No matter how old we are, we probably remember our own graduation very clearly. But it also marks a significant milestone in another respect, in the call to share our faith. No matter where we are heading: to college, to the work world, or wherever, one thing remains true about us throughout our lives. We are called to share are faith in Jesus Christ. While we do this first and foremost in our families and in our homes, it goes far beyond that, into a world that needs to hear a message of hope and love that only the Gospel can provide. As we venture out in to the world, into the struggle to define our culture and our laws, to determine what kind of people we are, and how we are to live together. The world appears to us in many places: On college campus, the workplace, the voting booth, our cities and our homes. It exists everywhere that we confront the world. There is no doubt that the world is not very welcoming to the message about our Christian faith. Threats to religious liberties, open hostility and contempt towards religion in our media and enter-tainment, threats to the sanctity of marriage, and even threats to the very meaning of what it is to be a man and what it means to be a woman. Anyone who reads the news is well aware of this. There are powerful forces in our culture that would much prefer that we just sit down and shut up. However that is the worst thing we could do. We must con-tinue to share the love of God with the world around us. The one common theme is always love, “the gift of self to others”. That is the hallmark of Christianity. We have to be ready to conquer the world with love, even if the world rejects the very concept of authentic love. We have to be witnesses of God’s love. The gift of love has consequences for us. We grow as per-sons, we find parts of ourselves that we never knew existed, and we become the person that God intended us to be. It has life changing consequences.

Your All “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit
you out of my mouth.” Rev. 3:15-16
What is the greatest thing you could leave behind when you die? Some will say it is the gift of love. Showing your family members what it means to love and en-
courage them to show that love to one another. Others might say that the greatest thing we can leave behind is faith. Demonstrating to my family what it means to trust in God and giving it your all in all we do is something I want my family to see in me. Is it something that you can physically and emotionally do. Do you always see the results now NO, but in the long run its so much more valuable. I guess I have caught myself thinking this week am I giving it my all, at church, at home and everywhere that I go to glorify God? As I have sat back and looked at it I have seen areas that I am doing very well at and areas that need a little work. It reminded me of a couple of weeks to “Strides for Schools” fun run (fun and run should never be used together), I was thinking that I ran some then stopped and walked a little and ran again. Is that like my spiritual life also, is it going and going giving it my all, then I have to stop and walk. As I walk I am not giving up what I believe in, but not giving it my all either. Making excuses of why I can’t do this or that and not pushing through to be the best I can be. Just like I said, I was going to start tomorrow and walk and run so next year I will run the whole thing, I have to start and do the same with my spiritual life also. You have to go and do it yourself because Satan is going to give you hundreds of reasons why not to start, you are the only one who can start it. This week I challenge everyone to GO and give it your all in all we do for Christ. Todd
