What Do You Say? The number of churches bearing the name of Jesus would hardly fit onto the most sophisticated

web site. The buildings dedicated to His name number in the thousands and the demonstrations claiming to represent Him make for a very long list in any city’s Yellow Pages. But what answer would people from these many churches give to the question Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” Throughout Christian history Jesus has been depicted and used in many ways that have little or nothing to do with what and who He presented Himself to be. Today He asks the question of us. Who do we say that He is? And what evidence do we give that our heart’s true answer is what we say it is?

Help Wanted: Part-Time Cook. The Diocese of Bismarck has an opening for an expeienced part-time cook. This position would be responsible for planning, preparation, serving and clean-up of the evening meal 2 days a week and ocassional special events. Catholic Home Missions AppealStrengthening the Church at Home

Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.orb/home-missions. There are envelopes at the ends of the pews for you to use at your convenience.

We are in need of weekend altar servers. Students who have completed the third grade through high school. Assist at mass. Training provided. Rotating Schedule. Flexible.

Vocation Views: Who do you say that Jesus is? Can you proclaim with Peter, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God?” Pray for the grace to act on your belief. (Matthew 16:13-20) Stewardship Thoughts: All of us are called to be good stewards of our time, but to different causes or activities according to God’s specific call. What is God’s call to me?

Marriage Moments: How wise, knowledgeable and beyond human understanding are the ways of God. (Romans 11:33-36) When in the throes of love, one’s spouse may seem to also have these qualitites. What intellecutal trait is your beloved strongest in? What about yourself?Parenting Pointers: Sometimes parents of young adults (15-30+) struggle with what appears to be a lack of faith in their offspring. Consider, “Sometimes you must lose faith to find it.” Your child may have to let go of “inherited faith” and eventually reflect on what is missing in their life. (Susan Vogt....www.SusanVogt.net)

The Holy Father Speaks...We discover in the final pages of the Bible that the ultimate destination of our Christian pilgrimage will be the heavenly Jerusalem. And on this pilgrimage we encounter the God of surprises who treats us with infinite tenderness, like a father welcoming his children home after a long and difficult journey.

Even if many experience life as a prolonged period of suffering - think of the fearful faces of those haunted by violence and war - still there is a Father who weeps with infinite compassion for His children, and who waits to console them with a very different future. We believe that neither death nor hatred has the last word, for we Christians see, with great hope, a larger horizon: the Kingdom of God, where all evil is banished forever.

It is Jesus himself who is the light of this new future, and who even now accompanies us on our way. Creation did not stop on the sixth day of Genesis, because God is continually looking after us, always ready to pronounce His blessing: “Behold, I make all things new!” (Rev. 21:5)

TO FOLLOW JESUS MEANS TO SHARE HIS MERCIFUL LOVE FOR EVERY HUMAN BEING.

(POPE FRANCIS)

“Breath of God: Living a Life Led by the Holy Spirit”Monday Evenings, September 11 - October 30 (7:00-8:30 p.m.)

Drawing on more than thirty years of ministry experience, Fr. Dave Pivonka walks us through a new way of relating to the Holy Spirit by sharing personal encounters. What he learned along the way will lead readers to have their own unique encounter and discover the joy of living a life being moved by the Spirit. As part of this eight-week study, we will explore the teachings of the Catholic Church on the Holy Spirit in both the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as well as through the FORMED videos. During this study, participants will discover the joy of living a life within God’s love and moved by the Spirit. Join us Monday evenings this fall to grow in your faith. Register by September 6 by calling Cindy Anderst at 701-255-4600.

Remember in PrayerThe parish has a list of people that wish to be prayed for during our weekend liturgies. Their names are posted on the wall in the upper gathering space of the church and also read by the deacons at the weekend masses. The names will remain on the prayer list for 30 days unless you call before that time to have them removed. If you want your name to remain on the list after 30 days have passed, please contact the parish office to have your name or the name of your loved one added again. Thank you.

Sunday, Aug 27, 2017TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMERock-solid faithPeter got a lot of things wrong in his dealings with Christ, but onthe day when Jesus asked him, “Who do you say I am?” Petergot it right and proved himself an astute and faithful disciple.Jesus’ response to Peter’s confession: “You are the Rock andupon this rock I will build my church.” Jesus chose Peter—despite his many instances of flawed thinking—to care for hisfaith community because Peter’s spiritual core was rock solid. The lesson here for all Christians is that it is our commitment tofollow Jesus, not our perfect understanding, that creates a sturdyfoundation of faith.

TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 22:19-23; Romans 11:33-36; Matthew16:13-20 (121) “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build mychurch.”

Monday, Aug 28, 2017MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCHUnsinkable Saint AugustineWhile some famous people may have amazing rags-to-richesstories to tell, the drama that launched Saint Augustine (354-430)to greatness went from reprobate to repentant. A brilliant youngman who indulged in earthly pleasures to excess (dismaying hismom, Saint Monica), he became “born again” and embraced theopposite extreme, condemning everything appealing to the senses.Thankfully, this champion of church teaching finally chose amore forgiving path, admitting, “Our hearts are restless till theyrest in Thee!”

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 8b-10; Matthew 23:13-22(425) "One who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God andby him who is seated on it."

Tuesday, Aug 29, 2017MEMORIAL OF THE PASSION OF JOHN THE BAPTISTTakes criticism wellIt’s human to feel pain and anger, especially at times whenyou’ve made a mistake and have been soundly called on thecarpet for it. King Herod’s wife Herodias wanted to get even withJohn the Baptist after he spoke out about something she wasinvolved in that was morally wrong. Herodias got revenge, but nota better life. Although hers is an example of extreme vengeance, the moral of her story is one worth remembering. When youmake mistakes that others rightfully point out, you can punish themessenger or take the message to heart, but only by doing thelatter can you make things right.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 (426); Mark 6:17-29 (634)“Herodias harbored a grudge against [John the Baptist] andwanted to kill him but was unable to do so.”

Wednesday, Aug 30, 2017Do what you sayThe word hypocrite comes from the Greek for “one who acts ona stage” and means “a person who puts on a false appearance ofvirtue or religion.” Hypocrisy was one of Jesus’ frequent targets, and the criticism of hypocrisy has played a major role in Christianmoral life ever since. Those who say one thing and do another, who want people to think they are something different than whatthey really are, or who hold others to standards they themselvesdon’t keep fall under this ignominious title. The simple antidote to

hypocrisy comes from integrity: consistency between yourthoughts and actions and between those actions and what youexpect of others.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13; Matthew 23:27-32 (427)“On the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled withhypocrisy and evildoing.”

Thursday, Aug 31, 2017Ready or not, here I comeOn this day in 1886, America recorded its first major earthquake,in Charleston, South Carolina. Forty-one people were killed. Wenever know when tragedy may strike. Our faith keeps us movingforward. We can’t freeze up terrified of what might come. Livingas good a life as we can is the best preparation for whateverhappens. So put today in God’s hands and live well and fully. That is the way to make it through anything.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 3:7-13; Matthew 24:42-51 (428)“Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lordis coming.”

Friday, Sep 01, 2017Keeping vigilYears ago a cartoon appeared in which a monk is standing on agolf course flying a kite. In the distance, two astonished golfersare staring up at the kite, on which is written the word “repent.”This cartoon was a gentler version of the stereotypical wild-eyed,long-haired prophet roaming the streets holding a sign calling onall to mend their ways because Jesus is about to come back. While these figures may seem a little ridiculous, they have a point. We don’t know when the Lord will return, so it’s best to be readyat all times. But we do not wait for him out of fear. If we live inChrist’s presence now, we will have nothing to be afraid of whenwe meet him again.

You can change the world

Why do Catholics have two versions of the Creed?

Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith. September 2017

The Apostles’ Creed is the summary of the beliefs of the early Church. The Nicene Creed is the expanded form of the Apostles’ Creed, stemming from two Church councils (Nicaea, 325 AD; Constantinople, 381 AD) intended to combat Arianism, which

proposed that Jesus was not God but a kind of super-saint.

Therefore, the Nicene Creed emphasizes Jesus’ divinity

and his divine Sonship (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no.465). The Nicene Creed is common

to both the Western and Eastern Churches.

Through the gift of free will, humans can choose to do good or choose evil. Most choose good, but when we learn of suffering caused by evil in the world, we can feel discouraged and powerless. Yet, through God, we have the power to transform the world. Don’t depend on you. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight” (Proverbs 3:5). Fixing this fallen world is beyond our abilities alone. God has the power, however, to bring true peace and healing to the world. Lay all your concerns at God’s feet and then have condence that he is at work.

Choose the good. Evil can be contagious. Sometimes the best way to live a life of good is to avoid bad

inuences or people that can pull us away from God. “... Pursue

righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who

call on the Lord” (2 Timothy 2:22). The

bonus? Your good life may inspire others. Sharpen your Sacramental sense. Sacraments are opportunities to share in God’s divine life. These supernatural encounters with God

strengthen our will, enlighten our minds, and inspire us to a closer relationship with God. Don’t miss an opportunity to meet Christ at Sunday Mass or the Sacrament of Reconciliation. His grace will keep you strong.

St. Wenceslaus Raised by his devoutly Christian

grandmother, Ludmilla, King Wenceslaus worked closely with the Church to end the persecution of Christians in Bohemia. “The Good King” encouraged German missionaries, built churches, and cared for the sick and poor. Political conict culminated in his assassination. One morning, led by his brother, Boleslaus, a group of nobles killed Wenceslaus on the doorsteps of a church. He was immediately recognized as a martyr and is one of the patron saints of Bohemia.

Pass on the gift In the encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI said, “Love is God's greatest gift to humanity, it is his promise and our hope.” As God’s children, we convey his love to others through acts of charity.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me” (Revelation

3:20).

While God is everywhere, he is present in the Eucharist in a special way. When,

in the context of the Mass, the priest speaks

the words of consecration over

the bread and wine on the

altar, they are mysteriously transformed into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. Although the characteristics of the bread and wine remain, they are substantially different (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1376). In that moment, Jesus is as present as he was to his Apostles in the Upper Room. The Eucharist does for our souls what food does for our bodies. You wouldn’t go for weeks without eating and still expect to be strong and healthy. From the Eucharist, we receive all the graces we need for the rest of the week. Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Our need for strength and rest are satised by Christ. The Church commands us to receive weekly what is, in fact, essential for our spiritual well-being.

Sept. 4 – St. Rose of Viterbo (1252). Born to poor parents in Viterbo, Italy, Rose used her gift of preaching to teach the women and girls in her neighborhood about the faith. As a young woman, she spoke out in support of the pope against the Ghibellines, who supported the emperor, Frederick II. She wanted to join the Carmelites, but was refused. She died at the age of seventeen and was buried at that same convent. Sept. 14 – Exaltation of the Holy Cross (300s). St. Helena (mother of

Emperor Constantine), made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, retracing places in Jesus’ life. She discovered three crosses, one of which was thought to be the Cross on which Jesus died. On the site, Constantine built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. Sept. 21 – St. Matthew the Evangelist (1st Century). Also known as Levi, he was a notorious tax collector. St. Matthew left everything when Jesus called him to spread the Gospel. He wrote the Gospel According to Matthew.

Just as visiting the doctor for regular checkups is key to maintaining our physical health, consistent maintenance is important for good spiritual health. Try these suggestions to craft a schedule to stay in top spiritual condition: Daily: Everything we need to know to strengthen our consciences and make good decisions is in the Bible. It is in Scripture that we discover God’s guiding voice. Take time daily to pray, read Scripture, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal its message for you. Weekly: Attend Mass each Sunday and Holy Day.

Do whatever is necessary so you can receive Communion. This is key.

Monthly: When we hold ourselves accountable, our actions become more pleasing

to God. Seek forgiveness each month in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). Annually: In our noisy world, it can be hard to hear God’s voice. Find a Catholic retreat center near you and get away with God. Or, spend a whole day in a favorite park or vacation spot praying and listening. Center your day around God.

Matthew 20:1-16a, Better late than never

In this Gospel reading, Jesus compared God’s kingdom to a vineyard in the charge of a generous landlord. In the parable, the landlord hired groups of workers at different times of the day: at the start of the workday, at midmorning, noon, midafternoon, and nally, at ve o’clock in the evening. Yet he paid all the same wage. The vineyard is God’s kingdom and God is the landlord. Some Bible scholars propose that the earlier groups of workers represented the Jewish people, who had followed God’s laws for thousands of years, while the

Gentiles were the latecomers. The workers also stood for those whom

God calls at different stages of life: from infancy,

adolescence, adulthood, and old age. All the laborers received

the same reward. It must have shocked Jesus’ listeners to hear that the landlord paid those who worked one hour

as if they’d worked for eight. Still, all were rewarded. Clearly, God’s ways are not our ways. What is important is not how many hours we’ve served God, but that we served him when he called us.

Maintain your spiritual health

If God is everywhere, why do we have to attend Mass?
