IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY AUGUST 11, 2019
From the Pastor’s Desk
A while back, Cardinal Dolan posted an article on his blog that another priest also brought to my attention. It is a very good article that deals with the mat-ter of preaching. It is from the Wall Street Journal entitled, “The Elements of Sermonizing Style” by J. Perry Smith. Every now and then I wonder, “how are we doing?” In my last parish, I would often ask the parishioners to let us, the priests, know what they thought of our homilies, especially if there were areas where we might need to put more attention and preparation. There were many positive comments on the preaching at Our Lady of Angels. There were also a number of constructive criticisms that I very much appreciated. Already here at IHM, I have been asked to speak more about Pro-Life issues. I will happily do so! It is interesting to note that the author of this article is an Anglican priest who salutes two Catholic priests for being excellent preach-ers. Here are his words:
Preaching is really hard, and many churchgoing people have no idea what goes into preparing a sermon. Perhaps they shouldn't care, but preachers are disappointed to find that many folks think we just preach on Sundays and do little else. There are preachers who wait until Saturday night to get their sermons ready; they are either extremely gifted or stupid and lazy. The late Rev. Dunstan Stout, a Roman Catholic missionary priest to the American community in Mexico City, was the best homilist I have heard, ever. I knew him in the mid-1960s, and he could deliver a four- to six-minute homily, hard-hitting and even accusatory, and everyone in the church be-lieved he was speaking directly to them. "Any homily longer than eight minutes is too long," he once told me. "Any homily shorter than four minutes is too short. A homily or sermon must be Gospel-centered and relevant to the listeners." His final rule on preaching: "Never say anything from the pulpit that you do not believe.”
(I remember an elderly nun who once said, “Father, if you don’t move my heart in 10 minutes or less, something else in my body is going to move!”) Here is the other priest he singles out as an excellent preacher:
Scripture has to come alive, set the heart on fire, and have meaning in peoples' lives for them to learn to love God and grow in faith. One preacher who knows how to de-liver a sermon like that is Pope Francis. He has captured the imagination of the world, in part because he lives the Gospel, but he also understands brevity and rele-vance. The most striking aspects of Francis are his genuineness and his ability to con-nect passionately with people. He clearly believes what he says and does what he be-lieves. Every priest, every pastor could learn from him. Our preaching might im-prove, and maybe, just maybe, we might become better Christians.
So my question, even if I might not like the answer: How are we doing as your preachers here at Immaculate Heart of Mary? Are we becoming better Christians? Let us know.
Enjoy what’s left of the summer!

HIS WORD TODAY
By Rev. William J. Reilly
“Faith is the realization of what is hoped for
and evidence of things not seen… for those
who speak thus show that they are seeking a
homeland.” “Do not be afraid any longer, little
flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the
Kingdom.”
Remember the flamboyant
congressman and minister
known for his mantra ‘Keep
the faith baby’? It is faith in
God, belief in His word which gives meaning to
life. I ask myself what do I hope for and what is
the evidence not seen.
My life in the church is one of faith, which must
continue to grow daily. Even when I have disap-
pointments, I keep my eyes fixed on Jesus. I look
to the Lord and the fulfillment of His promises.
His kingdom has already begun in my living the
faith found in the church, in my life of prayer and
the sacraments. The Father has given me the king-
dom already. I ask that I may see the kingdom
now in the church and pray, ‘Thy kingdom come.’
