This Weekend’s Scripture

First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Sirach emphasizes the importance of honoring one’s parents. He explains that spiritual riches will come to those who are kind to their mother and father.

Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul advises us to treat each other with kindness and mercy and to forgive as God forgives us. His words remind families to always love and respect one another and let Christ’s peace reign in their hearts, and in their homes.

Gospel: Luke 2:22-40 Jesus was brought to Jerusalem to be consecrated according to the law of Moses. A man named Simeon had learned he would not die until he had seen God’s anointed. Upon seeing Jesus, he immediately declared he had witnessed “the glory of your people of Israel.” The prophetess Anna also gave thanks and spoke of Jesus to all who would listen. Both recognized the pow-er of Jesus, although he was still an infant.

As Pope Francis says, “The Gospel joy which enlivens the community of disciples is a missionary joy,” and “The joy of the Gospel is for all people: no one can be exclud-

ed.” All are welcome to join a Be My Witness small group. The small groups are starting soon!

A Stewardship Thought . . .

“…as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” COLOSSIANS 3:13

Forgiveness – one of the hard-est things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this oppor-tunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone - may-be someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co- worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.

Galatians … Set Free to Live

Paul’s letter to the Galatians speaks directly to the hearts of Christians and addresses the most important question we can ask: “What must we do to be saved?” This fascinating letter reveals the merciful love that God the Father has for us, his children. It speaks of the extraordinary gift of salvation that Jesus has won for us, and it explains how we can unite ourselves to Christ’s redeeming sacrifice. In the new study by Galatians: Set Free to Live by Jeff Cavins, learn what it means to have this filial relation-ship with God the Father, how He honors us as His children, and how we must honor Him as our loving Father.

Join us for an eight part bible study of the message of St. Paul. It will begin Tuesday, January 9 at 7PM.

A Prayer for the New Year

Remember us, O God; from age to age be our comforter.

You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights, seasons and years.

Bless your children at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope

that is ours in the coming of Christ. You are our God, living and reigning,

forever and ever. Amen.

Happy New Year everyone! 2017 was a great year for us and with your continued support we’ll accomplish even more in2018. Our next General Meeting will be on Monday Jan. 22nd in MDH at 7:30p.m. Hope to see you there.

Our food pantry has been a busy place this Christmas season. Although we are well stocked on many items thanks to all the recent large donations, it goes quickly. We certainly appreciate your continued support. Can you help us with non-perishable donations? We need: juices & drinks, pasta sauce, canned or packaged fruit, peanut butter, coffee, sugar. Donations can be left in the church lobby after any mass. Thank you.

Our Lord said; “As you have done for the least of my brethren, you have done unto me.” This is the basis for all we do at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We invite you to share in our mission. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance please contact us through the parish office. In the past we’ve helped people with rent, utility, groceries, medicines, special dietary requirements and many other needs. No work of charity is foreign to our society. In the name of Christ we are here to help and to serve. Please put us to work.
