The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the ϐlesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a ϐifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dear Parishioners,

The Church’s treasure is the Sacraments. Sacraments are outward signs that point to

something real and concrete. The seven sacraments of the church make known or bring about

the presence of Jesus Christ in our lives. The Church has the beautiful task of safeguarding,

promoting and celebrating the sacraments at different stages in the lives of the faithful, so that

the Lord Jesus may help us to reach our eternal reward, one day, in heaven.

I am happy to announce, that after meeting with certain members of our parish staff, that

we are going to celebrate the sacraments, that were placed on hold due to the Covid-19

pandemic.

I wanted you to be aware of the dates and times of the celebration of the Sacraments here

at Our Lady of Angels:

Saturday, Aug. 29: 10am & 1pm First Penance

Sunday, Aug. 30: 10:30am Mass Adult Confirmation in Spanish

Sunday, Sept. 13: 12noon Mass Adult Confirmation in English

Saturday, Sept. 19: 10:30am Mass First Communion in English

Saturday, Sept. 26: 1pm Mass First Communion in Spanish

Sunday, Oct. 4: 10:30am Mass Full Initiation in Spanish

12noon Mass Full Initiation in English

Again, the celebration of these Sacraments are for those whom it was postponed in the

Spring due to the coronavirus. I am very proud of the faith and the enthusiasm of those who

look forward to receiving the Grace (God’s life in us) that the sacraments bestow upon us. May I

ask that we all keep those who will be receiving the sacraments in our prayers.

Thanks for your support!
