THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 22, 2017
A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR1. An Early Appeal With the season of Lent just around the corner
(Ash Wednesday, March 1), a very special need for the good of our parish and wider community has arisen. Sadly, in the last few months, a number of the “old-guard” Fish Fry workers have died (three this month alone). It is past time now that a new generation of workers step up to shoulder this important responsibility. Could that be you? I hope so! We’ll be putting out our sign-up poster soon. Why not team up with a parish friend or two and join us on the Fridays of Lent? You’ll have a good time working for a good cause. Thanks so much!
2. Presidential Inauguration, etc. As Donald Trump assumes the presidency, let’s all keep
him and our country in our prayers. Many opposed him and many supported him. As Catholics, our mandate is to support him (and our government) where we can, and oppose him when we must, as in the Obama administration.
Above all, we are called to defend human life wherever it is threatened for the immigrants of Syria, to those on death row and those in danger of being aborted. May, the patroness of our land, Mary of the Immaculate Conception, watch over us all.
3. Life Issues Life Issues Forum: This Month: Pray, Gather, Share!
By Caitlin Thomas (Staff Member, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops), January 13, 2017.
The Christmas season, filled with joy and color, also often brings compassion and concern for others to the forefront of our minds. As we return to our routines after the holidays, January can seem like a dreary time of year in comparison. We may even begin to lose our focus on prayer and reaching out to others. But our Catholic faith teaches us to rejoice always, to pray without ceasing, and that in all that we do, every act should be done with love (1 Thes. 5:16-17; 1 Cor. 16:14).
As we resume the celebration of Ordinary Time in this new year, we remember that celebrating the liturgy inside church walls goes hand in hand with celebrating God’s gifts of life, mercy, and love out in the world – including the digital world.
At the end of January, many people across the country...will participate in liturgies, prayer vigils, marches, or rallies to peacefully stand up for the protection of life. But whether or not you plan to attend one of these events, “all together, we must build a new culture of life,” as Pope Saint John Paul II noted in his encyclical The Gospel of Life (EV 95).
A. Pope Francis’ Remarks Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to
care with particular love and concern, are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. Frequently, as a way of ridiculing the Church’s effort to defend their lives, attempts are made to present their position as ideological, obscurantist, and conservative.
Yet, this defense of human life is closely linked to the defense of each and every other human right. It involves the conviction that a human being is always sacred and inviolable, in any situation and at every stage of development. Human beings are ends in themselves and never a means of resolving other problems. Once this conviction disappears, so do solid and lasting foundations for the defense of human rights, which would always be subject to the passing whims of the powers that be.
Reason alone is sufficient to recognize the inviolable value of each single human life, but if we also look at the issue from the standpoint of faith, “every violation of the personal dignity of the human being cries out in vengeance to God and is an offense against the creator of the individual.” (Christifideles Laici, 37).
B. March for Life (D.C.) Please see elsewhere in the bulletin details on how to
participate in the bus trip to Washington, D.C., leaving here Thursday, January 26th, and returning late on Friday, January 27. The cost is $75.00 (assistance available). The trip is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. For those unable to go, the church will be open for prayer the next morning, Friday, at 11:00 a.m., following the Memorial Mass for Dick Wells at 10:00 a.m., until late Friday evening. Join us there.
WELCOME!You may have come as a stranger to us, yet you are known to Our Lord, Jesus Christ. In His name, we pray you will find peace, hospitality and friendship with us.

NOTES FROM THE LOFT
The music for the current Mass setting can be found on the insert in the hymnal. Also, two of this weekend’s hymns – “The Servant Song” and “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow” – have repeated verses. The verses are not printed twice; they are numbered “1, 6” and “1, 4.”
Mass texts sometimes emphasize a certain image, and today’s image is light. The first reading from Isaiah tells of the people in darkness seeing a great light. Matthew’s gospel directly quotes Isaiah (albeit in a different translation). Psalm 27 reminds us that the Lord is our light and our salvation. The first option for the communion antiphon urges us to “be radiant,” and the second affirms that we who follow the light of the world will not walk in darkness.
All of today’s hymns include images of light: “Light from Light” in verse two of the opening, the “Christ-light” in verse three of the offertory, “Christ, be our light” during Communion, and the promise that “suns shall rise and set no more” in Verse 3 of the closing.

Bishop Robert Barron’s CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church, but changed the course of western civilization.
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, The Theologian, demonstrated that faith and reason are not at odds, as they come from the same source. ST. CATHERINE of SIENA, The Mystic, gave testimony to the reality of the spiritual dimension here and beyond.BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, The Convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith.G.K. CHESTERTON, The Evangelist, publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of Christianity. MICHELANGELO, The Artist, dramatically demonstrated that beauty and creativity are a primary route of access to God.

ST. EDWARD THE CONFESSOR CHURCH GRANVILLE, OHIO
The Catechism Corner
We read this week in the Catechism paragraphs 26-49, Section One, Chapter One of the profession of faith, Man’s Capacity for God. Man by nature and vocation is a religious being. Man is made to live in communion with God in whom he finds happiness. When man listens to the message of creation and the voice of conscience, man can arrive at certainty about the existence of God. Our Church teaches that the one true God, our Creator and Lord, can be known with certainty from His works. We really can name God from the many perfections of his creatures, which are likenesses of the infinitely perfect God. “Without the Creator, the creature vanishes.”

The prophet Isaiah again records a remarkable prophecy in our First Reading from the Book of Isaiah. Within the context of that Scriptural reading, Isaiah says, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” Just prior to that Isaiah speaks of two areas of Israel that are also the names of two of the twelve tribes of Israel – Zebulon and Naphtali. These tribes were located at the northern end of Israel adjacent to the Sea of Galilee.
When the Assyrians invaded and occupied Israel, it was the northern tribes like Zebulon and Naphtali that suffered the most. It was they on whom the greatest gloom and darkness descended. However, the prophecy speaks of the coming of the Messiah, the birth of Jesus, the Light of the World. Thus, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”
Christ is still the light of the world, and He still provides this light and hope to those of us who may feel like we are in darkness and distress. We must embrace Him nonetheless and follow His way by becoming His disciple. If we do that, our lives will indeed be filled with light and great rejoicing. It is up to us to respond. In John 8:12, the Lord tells us, “I am the light of the world; anyone who follows me will not be walking in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

“What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” ~Saint Benedict, from the Rule of Saint Benedict (73:3)
"By turning your eyes on God in meditation, your whole soul will be filled with God.
Begin all your prayers in the presence of God.” ~SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES
Monday, January 23 ~ Third Week in Ordinary Time Day of prayer for the legal protection of unborn children.
Holy Gospel: Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14 At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said,
“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives
one child such as this in my name receives me. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. What is your
opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than
over the ninety-nine that did not stray. In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that
one of these little ones be lost.
Meditation on this special day of prayer: Love is not merely a feeling, but is rather the desire for the
best possible good for those whom we love. Through our natural intelligence and through Divine Revelation we become aware of the value of this most basic of all gifts which is life. Mere reason leads us
to comprehend that it is better to be alive than never have had been in existence. The knowledge of the
value of life that comes through revelation leads us to understand better this gift and to appreciate it: as a result, we worship and love more and more the Giver of this gift. This love is what moves us to protect the
life of the unborn or any who might be unjustly treated. We are also led to protect women that might feel tempted or forced to commit abortion, as we know the devastating consequences that abortion will have
in their lives. Last but not least we have to love, even if most of them seem to be utterly unlovable, the many perpetrators of abortion: medical personnel, and pro-abortion activists and politicians. We have to
do everything that we can to convince them of their errors so that they repent and change their ways, both for their own benefit and for the benefit of society.
Prayer: God our Creator, we give thanks to you, who alone have the power to impart the breath of life as
you form each of us in our mother's womb; grant, we pray, that we, whom you have made stewards of creation, may remain faithful to this sacred trust and constant in safeguarding the dignity of every human
life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation on this special day of prayer: All human beings are created in the image and likeness
of God. Using a traditional scholastic term, we can state that God is the exemplary cause of every human being, in other words, He is the model on which all human beings are created. He looked upon himself and
wished that other beings would share in His own happiness. So if we reflect upon ourselves, we can begin
to understand our participation in the greatness of our Creator. This participation on His greatness leads us to comprehend that He has brought us out of nothing with a purpose, because knowing His intelligence
and His loving nature it is clear that all His actions are always guided by a magnificent purpose. The first intention for which He has created us is that we should enjoy for an eternity His loving company in
Heaven. All human persons are called to this eternal and loving company, no one is excluded, save those who, through their own actions, exclude themselves. This manner of creation brings us to understand the
unique essential dignity of every human being. A dignity that is not lost for any deprivation of the many external perfections that we might expect to find in a human person. A person might be born with a
disability, or may suffer disability through injury or disease, but these deprivations do not affect his or her
basic dignity as a fellow human being, a fellow child of God, a brother or sister in Christ Jesus. A Christian
also has the hope that one day when the doors of Paradise will be opened for those children, all their
human imperfections will be healed and they will enjoy forever the beatific vision that we all long for.
Tuesday, January 24 ~ Third Week in Ordinary Time
Saint Francis de Sales ~ Bishop and Doctor of the Church Patron Saint of the Diocese of Columbus
Holy Gospel: Mark 3:31-35 The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him. A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and
your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you.” But he said to them in reply, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother
and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
Meditation: Jesus is God's love incarnate – God's love made visible in human flesh (1 John 4:9-10). That is why Jesus describes himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep and the shepherd
who seeks out the sheep who have strayed and lost their way. God is like the father who yearns for his prodigal son to return home and then throws a great party for his son when he has a change of heart and
comes back (Luke 15:11-32). Jesus offered up his life on the cross for our sake, so that we could be forgiven and restored to unity and friendship with God. It is through Jesus that we become the adopted
children of God – his own sons and daughters. That is also why Jesus told his disciples that they would
have many new friends and family relationships in his kingdom. Whoever does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family – his sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood
of Christ.
Prayer: O God, who for the salvation of souls willed that the Bishop Saint Francis de Sales become all
things to all, graciously grant that, following his example, we may always display the gentleness of your
charity in the service of our neighbor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: One of the early martyrs of the Church, Lucian of Antioch, once said: "a Christian's only
relatives are the saints" – namely those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and adopted as sons and daughters of God. Those who have been baptized into Jesus Christ and who live as his disciples
enter into a new family, a family of "saints" here on earth and in heaven. Jesus changes the order of relationships and shows that true kinship is not just a matter of flesh and blood. Our adoption as sons and
daughters of God transforms all of our relationships and requires a new order of loyalty to God first and to his kingdom of righteousness and peace. Do you want to grow in love and friendship? Allow God's Holy
Spirit to transform your heart, mind, and will to enable you to love freely and generously as he loves.
About Saint Francis de Sales: Francis was born on August 21, 1567, and ordained to the priesthood in 1593. From 1594 to 1598 he labored at the difficult and dangerous task of preaching to the Protestants of
Chablais and effected the return of some 70,000 souls to the Catholic faith. In 1602 he became bishop of Genf. His zeal for souls is attested in 21,000 extant letters and 4,000 sermons which exemplify how he
applied St. Paul's words: "I have become all things to all men." You may epitomize his character in two words: (1) kindliness and (2) lovableness — virtues that were the secret of his success. His writings reflect
his kindheartedness and sweet disposition. Most widely known is the saint's Introduction to the Devout
Life, which, with the Imitation of Christ, is rightly considered the finest outline of Christian perfection. Francis' Introduction proves to the world that true piety makes persons amiable, lovable and happy. A
renowned and holy friendship existed between him and St. Frances de Chantal. In cooperation with her he founded the Visitation Nuns in 1610. Out of love for his own poor diocese, he refused opportunities for
advancement, including the cardinalate. In recognition of the Introduction and his other writings, Francis has been declared a doctor of the Church. How Francis developed a gentle and amiable disposition is a
story in itself; he was not born a saint. By nature his temperament was choleric, fiery; little was needed to throw him into a state of violent anger. It took years before he mastered his impatience, his unruly
temper; by constant perseverance he did in time attain perfect self-mastery. Wherein lies a lesson.
Wednesday, January 25 ~ Third Week in Ordinary Time Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, Apostle
Holy Gospel: Mark 16:15-18 Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive
out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink
any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Meditation: Jesus' departure and ascension into heaven was both an end and a beginning for his
disciples. While it was the end of Jesus' physical presence with his beloved disciples, it marked the beginning of Jesus' presence with them in a new way. Jesus promised that he would be with them always
to the end of time. Now as the glorified and risen Lord and Savior, ascended to the right hand of the
Father in heaven, Jesus promised to send them the Holy Spirit who would anoint them with power on the Feast of Pentecost, just as Jesus was anointed for his ministry at the River Jordan. When the Lord Jesus
departed physically from the apostles, they were not left in sorrow or grief. Instead, they were filled with joy and with great anticipation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus' last words to his apostles point to
his saving mission and to their mission to be witnesses of his saving death and his glorious resurrection and to proclaim the good news of salvation to the entire world. Their task is to proclaim the good news of
salvation, not only to the people of Israel, but to all the nations. God's love and gift of salvation is not just for a few, or for a nation, but it is for the whole world – for all who will accept it. The gospel is the power
of God, the power to forgive sins, to heal, to deliver from evil and oppression, and to restore life. Do you
believe in the power of the gospel?
Prayer: O God, who taught the whole world through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Paul, draw us,
we pray, nearer to you through the example of him whose conversion we celebrate today, and so make us
witnesses to your truth in the world. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: This is the great commission which the risen Christ gives to the whole church. All believers have been given a share in this task – to be heralds of the good news and ambassadors for
Jesus Christ, the only savior of the world. We have not been left alone in this task, for the risen Lord
works in and through us by the power of his Holy Spirit. Today we witness a new Pentecost as the Lord pours out his Holy Spirit upon his people to renew and strengthen the body of Christ and to equip it for
effective ministry and mission world-wide. Do you witness to others the joy of the gospel and the hope of the resurrection?
About Saint Paul: St. Paul, originally named Saul, a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, was born at Tarsus,
the capitol of Cilicia. He was a Roman citizen. He was brought up as a strict Jew, and later became a violent persecutor of the Christians. While on his way to Damascus to make new arrests of Christians, he
was suddenly converted by a miraculous apparition of Our Lord. From a fierce persecutor he became the great Apostle of the Gentiles. He made three missionary journeys which brought him to the great centers
of Asia Minor and southern Europe, and made many converts. Fourteen of his Epistles are found in the New Testament. He was beheaded in Rome in 66, and his body is kept in the Basilica of St. Paul near the
Ostian Way.
Thursday, January 26 ~ Third Week in Ordinary Time
Saints Timothy and Titus, Bishops
Holy Gospel: Mark 4:21-25 Jesus said to his disciples, “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be
made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to
you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has
not, even what he has will be taken away.
Meditation: Lamps in the ancient world served a vital function, much like they do today. They enable
people to see and work in the dark and to avoid stumbling. The Jews also understood "light" as an expression of the inner beauty, truth, and goodness of God. In his light we see light (Psalm 36:9). His
word is a lamp that guides our steps (Psalm 119:105). God's grace not only illumines the darkness in our
lives, but it also fills us with spiritual light, joy, and peace. Jesus used the image of a lamp to describe how his disciples are to live in the light of his truth and love. Just as natural light illumines the darkness and
enables one to see visually, so the light of Christ shines in the hearts of believers and enables us to see the heavenly reality of God's kingdom. In fact, our mission is to be light-bearers of Christ so that others
may see the truth of the gospel and be freed from the blindness of sin and deception.
Prayer: O God, who adorned Saints Timothy and Titus with apostolic virtues, grant through the intercession of them both, that, living justly and devoutly in this present age, we may merit to reach our
heavenly homeland. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Jesus remarks that nothing can remain hidden or secret. We can try to hide things from
others, from ourselves, and from God. How tempting to shut our eyes from the consequences of our sinful ways and bad habits, even when we know what those consequences are. And how tempting to hide them
from others and even from God. But, nonetheless, everything is known to God who sees all, who hears all,
who knows all. There is great freedom and joy for those who live in God's light and who seek this truth. Those who listen to God and heed his voice will receive more from him. Do you know the joy and freedom
of living in God's light, and letting his light illuminate what is right and good and true?
Friday, January 27 ~ Third Week in Ordinary Time
Saint Angela Merici, Virgin
Holy Gospel: Mark 4:26-34 Jesus said to the crowds: “This is how it is with the Kingdom of God; it is as
if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear,
then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.” He said, “To what shall we compare the Kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is
like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the
birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it. Without parables he did not speak to them, but to his own disciples he explained
everything in private.
Meditation: What can mustard seeds teach us about the kingdom of God? The tiny mustard seed literally grew to be a tree which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard seed it
produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a transformation from
within. Just as a seed has no power to change itself until it is planted in the ground, so we cannot change
our lives to be like God until God gives us the power of his Holy Spirit.
Prayer: May the Virgin Saint Angela never fail to commend us to your compassion, O Lord, we pray, that,
following the lessons of her charity and prudence, and express it in what we do. Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: The Lord of the Universe is always ready to transform us by the power of his Spirit. Are you ready to let God change you by his grace and power? The kingdom of God produces a transformation
in those who receive the new life which Jesus Christ offers. When we yield to Jesus Christ, our lives are
transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the Apostle says, "we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us" (2
Corinthians 4:7). Do you believe in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit?
